I would argue that if he's just "a guy," that would defeat the whole point of Marius being a specialized slayer of mages. Sort of undercuts that whole "magic cheats" speech Tessa delivers at the beginning.

I flipped back to the short story on Calpernia and it really does imply that being trained a "magekiller" is a big deal.

Marius’s talents were drawing more and more attention. Even Calpernia saw he was wasted as a bodyguard. With the right training he could become a talented assassin or even a mage-killer: a source of prestige for any magister and a way to tip the political scale.

He obviously needs to have undergone a rigorous and specialized training regime but to give him superhuman abilities is what defeats the "magic is a cheat" point because he would be cheating too.

I'm really liking the premise of this based on the first few pages of the preview.

Normal people taking on mages and winning?  Sign me up.  I've been getting vibes of a major pro-mage bias from the main series, so this comic showing the negative side of magic will hopefully be a refreshing change of pace.

No, just levelling the playing field.

I would add that if Marius is just a guy, that renders Tessa's speech about prices rather pointless.

Second issue should be out January 20. Issues 3 and 4 should be February 17 and March 16.

Woot, nice b-day present for me. Thanks for the info.

Other than that, I think someone may have messed up the timeline. If I am not wrong, this was supposed to start before DAI and later issues would coincide with it?
And yet, Marius is given an issue of Swords and Shields. Now, either Varric uses the same cover for all of the issues of this particular serial, or this happens after Corypheus destroys Haven, at the very least.

The dialogue in the DAI quest says she's waiting for the latest issue of Swords and Shields, which Varric had not planned on finishing. It can certainly be a previous issue, or even the first one.

The answer to the Swords and Shields problem is that probably Varric did use the same cover for the copy he gave to Cassandra as for the previous issue.   There wouldn't have been any artwork for a new cover because he says he wasn't going to continue writing the series, because the earlier issues had made so little money.    The edition he did for Cassandra was a one off and Varric is an author, not an artist.

While this is accurate, the DAI cover was also probably just a fun thing thrown in by the devs, since it clearly depicts Avaline. I don't think we need to read too much into details like this. I mean, you could even go farther and say that he likely would not have had time to get it professionally printed and bound, as we see it in the game.

The devs do like their little easter-eggy, fan-servicey bits, in addition to things they throw in for their own amusement, like the copious cheeses all throughout DAI.

That elven slave, Flavius, is interesting.
He is a slave but he is better dressed than many of the free commoners we see, appears content and even has enough pride to look down on Tessa, a free human.

With regards to slave dress, I'd imagine that it depends on the position of the slave within the household, and their job. If he is basically the magister's (well, we now know the Archon's) chief of staff, it makes sense that he would be dressed in such a manner. It's reflective of his master's station, as well as his own within his master's household.

A price can be literally anything.

For instance, let us say that what allowed Marius to escape slavery was his training to kill mages. Maybe he even killed those who who tried to keep him in captivity.

And now, he feels that in order to repay his freedom, he must use his skills to protect people from mages ergo paying a price.

How? Inquisition seemed pretty even on Mage-Templar issues and all of ][ was nothing but evil or stupid mages.

Actually, Inquisition is most pro-mage game in entire series it pretty much ignored most of problems that mages pose like abomnations or even corruption among mages , add to that completely out the touch with reality Leliana mary sue ending where "Freedom solves everything". I hope Magekiller will return to the realistic roots when it comes to mages as well next products and maybe i will regain intrest in dragon age products.

I don't like that is silly, this is why the writers changed the outcome for Divine Leliana.

I would not be disappointed to see a Magekiller specialization in DA4.

@TK514:  I would LOVE a magekiller spec.

Oddly enough - I'd love a "Mage" magekiller spec... cause nothing is more beautiful to me than a mage who crushes his "fellows" in the name of the non-mage.

Arrogant little s--ts that nearly ALL DA mages are...

I've punched someone once in my life.  I was little... and we were on the playground.  Fortunately, I punched him and he went down.  He ran to the lunch aid (people who watch the playground) and told on me.  I was called over.

And what she said made me the man I am today:  "Sometimes little boys get hit."

Yes mages... I'm the mage that wants to lay you out on the playground for the betterment of all.

I want to wait until the collected edition (not sure the technical term), but might be hard to avoid spoilers until then.

I hear ya. I specifically posted in the spoiler forum so people could feel free to talk about the issue. But if everyone keeps the discussion to this thread, I think you'll be fine.

But, seeing as how this appears to be the only such thread about the comic thus far, with only some posts talking about the actual content of the comic and the rest on lore in general, I'm starting to think there might not be much interest in this one.

So far most companions mages proved truly to be just arrogant little bastards
Aside from Wynne i truly dislike ever mage companion of the franchise.

I just finished it. I like that Marius likes Varric's writing. I liked seeing Hercinia and the Valarian Fields. Archon Radonis looks like a hammerhead shark. Itchy for more.

If Marius does appear in DA4, I wonder how much of this will be forgotten in order to pigeonhole him into a specific class spec. <_<

I hope companions in the next game get their own special skill tree like they did in DA2.

There must be something going on. I doubt most people could walk out of a warehouse with an arcane horror and at least three rage demons with a few burns.

I sort of wonder about that scar on his chest. Something implanted in him, maybe?

Implanted, or perhaps removed?

Got my copy in the mail today. The first picture of Marius made me think of Hawke. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

What I would like to see if a comic about a magister thriving to make Tevinter rule Thedas once more. This smells a bit Fenris to me, not that he wasn´t a good character. Just that all of these apologetic stories how evil mages are, and Tevinter mages in general, are starting to become boring.

The latest game and comic series were about killing magisters who were trying to take over the world.

Has the Archon been revealed as evil or good or simply neutral with regard to his ethics?    The series is meant to deal with the rise of the Venatori but it is acknowledged in DAI that the current rulers in Tevinter would not welcome an Elder One invading their patch.   On the whole it would seem that the Venatori did appeal to those who either had little hope of rising through the ranks under the current system (like Calpurnia) or were too obviously out to short track themselves to a position of power when they didn't really have the ability to back it up (like Erimond).    The archon approaches the Inquisition to get them to deal with a Venatori cell on his behalf, so it wouldn't surprise me if he had other individuals or groups tracking them down as well.     Even if he has very self serving and selfish motives for wanting the Venatori out of the way, it still means he is opposing them.

Evil magisters, this one could be the hero. From Tevinter point of view.

Yes, the Venatori seemed to be a extreme fringe zealot group who probably had little support in Tevinter. Or should have, it would be hard to sell to public that following a darkspawn monster is a good thing since darkspawn have been trying to destroy Tevinter though out the history.
