I always thought Tevinter was more "Anything Goes", so if they have to send demons in the dead of night to kill you and possess your corpse they're going to and be damned what people think.
Rules, honor and duels are more of an Orlesian thing in my mind.

From the combined lore available to use I would say that duels and call-outs and posturing are the fashionable ways to resolve conflict, but expect everyone involved to try and rig the game as much as possible.

So, "anything goes" is more-often-than-not how it works out in practice, but it's not actually the facade they're trying to maintain.

That was very cleverly written, and I like the twist of you-know-who showing up. Still having a little trouble figuring out Marius' presonality, though I suspect he'd make a good paladin.

I liked the depiction of the assassinations. Dragon Age too often depicts assassins as combatants, but an actually good hitman shouldn't be openly engaging their target. This is why the Crows are so often owned in the games.

It was a bit of an odd transition to the Tevinter hit squads, but otherwise, pretty good.

Fair enough. Still, as far as the work goes, I'm not really seeing the technique that warrants a "magekiller" speciality.

As for the other issue regarding assassination - I would imagine in Tevinter (under the pretense of "might makes right"), that if you have beef, you step to. Hiring plebeians to settle your score would be seen as an "Orlesian" move, a show of weakness. Not that it actually works out that way in practice, but I'm sure that's how the big-bad mages like to spin it.

On top of that, there's a multitude of other political issues and dangers...

Spoiler

Frankly I am a bit disappointed with the Magisters and Tevinter in these comics. Now there is a lot of talk in the comics and codex how bad and powerful Magister rule Tevinter, yet Marius & Co kill bunch of them with very conventional and easy way. Strangling a master of magic with a piece of chain? I mean even the games gives us many spells which can be used for a close combat fight so yes, these magekiller techniques were exceptionally lame. And so were the mages. No wonder Tevinter is not doing so well.

Even though I really loved this issue better than the first, I'm growing to loathe Tessa more and more. I get that she's the spunky one in the duo, but her snark and sarcasm just grates on my nerve, especially when she's trying to explain a situation.

That makes perfect sense, actually. A Mage can't cast spells if they're gasping for air.

I would think that a magister would have some sort of contingency that springs up when someone touches them. Makes me think back to the tough wizard and lich fights in BG2.

I've "touched" quite a few Tevinter mages with my blades, and none of them had spells that instantly char-broiled me.

As powerful as a mage is, they are still mortal. These are not 3.5E D&D wizards.

^ While I agree, I don't think you should use in-game combat as an argument for anything. There are all sorts of game mechanics that are not feasible or applicable to the story aspects of the game, or setting.

That said, all of the deaths in the comic were carried out as elaborately planned assassination attempts. Infiltrate, attack, kill, leave. That is the whole point of them: to be stealthy and inconspicuous. All of the mages in question were surprised because they were in a familiar location and not expecting an attack, in addition to the typical arrogant "Who would dare attack me?" mindset they likely had for people in their position. I had no problem whatsoever with the way that played out in the issue.

Wouldn't keep my hopes up. Bioware have great writers and know how to weave an amazing story, but they are **** when it comes to designing cities and urban areas.

To be fair, assassinations between magisters/ fellow mages is pretty common in Tevinter. I would think that a magister of all thing would be more self-aware and prepared for such attacks?

In either case, a mage is still a person and they're being killed by those trained specifically to kill them

I did think of this, and you're right. But I still think there are those elements present that would lead them to let their guard down.

Also, from a lore standpoint there are probably things that could help fight a mage: runes, alchemy potions (whatever it is Sera uses) and lots of little contraptions.

Granted, I only saw the1st chapter, so I don't know how the others mages were killed. Also, I can't help but wonder if Marius' sword is somehow enchanted? I do recall magic attack being drawn to it like a lightning rod.

For those complaining about the ease with which the Venatori went down, one has only to compare the Archon with the mage that was part of the hit squad in the last couple of pages.

That mage, in the process of casting a spell, creates a very visible ligthshow around himself and takes enough time for Marius to tell Tessa to kill him and for her to do so.

Meanwhile, the Archon creates walls of fire and ice in seconds with the only visible effect being ice around his staff.

Mage's power and skill clearly vary widly.

The archon doesn't even move to cast, it's ridiculous. Reminds me of Solas actually.

I'm loving this comic book! I barely know anything about Calpernia because I always side with the mages, so I was very surprised to see her in this. And she's Marius' girlfriend, or whatever!

Marius reminds me of a very hardcore Fenris. I'm sure he would love to go mage-killing with him in Tevinter, lol.

I read somewhere we'll be seeing cameos from Inquisitions characters. Can't wait for #3!  :D
