Did anyone else feel disappointed in the lack of space themed horror elements in the prior Mass Effect games? I was anticipating some epic run down space station in the same vain as Dead Space with some spooky encounters.

Should they implement smilar themes in the new Mass Effect?

I'm all for some creepy things happening, like in the Leviathan DLC.  But not Dead Space.  My anxiety levels can only go so high.

Well, I remember the first time I entered the Collector ship in ME2: it still sends chills down my spine.

Yea, Dead Space was the only comparison I could think off, I didn't mean as heavy as Dead Space

I don't know. The Reaper husks would have been way more intimidating, if they had been more like the Necromorphs.

If we're going to be dealing with a force that that is horrifically killing people then we should at least be shown the implications of that. I mean for a race of cold and ruthless machines bent on the cleansing of all advanced life from the galaxy, the Reapers sure were squeamish when it came to targeting children on screen.

ME 3 has the one little kid in the beginning that we don't even know actually existed. Dead Space had several example of what happened when the Necromorphs took young children, toddlers and infants.

Dead Space wasn't even scary, and then in the 3rd game they just stopped even trying to scare me.

but no I wasn't all that disappointed. I wasn't playing Mass Effect for horror elements to begin with anyway.

the game would benefit from more suspense/thriller elements, such as the leviathan dlc. i wouldnt call that dlc horror rly. visual perception of horror is too broad an aspect to cover in a game. that's not to say that you cannot have some forms of it. sure you can. but it should be subordinate to larger themes instead of a standalone theme by itself, for a game such as mass effect.

Well, it was a mystery in the Leviathan DLC.  I think that's what y'all most liked about it, 'cause it's what I liked most about it.  It was a choose your own adventure mystery book.

I personally wish they don't go that far. The leviathan DLC and the collector vessel has the exact level of creepiness this series needs. Mass effect would benefit way more from discovering fantastical alien places, more diverse ambiances, more quirky and weird alien species to interact with. Suspense fits the theme, not graphical horror. It's not that I don't like horror or can't handle the sight of rotting corpses and exposed viscera or something like that lol It's just not necessary tho have this elements in this game just for the shock vaule. Using it just for key point's (like the mentioned above) is fine, no need to abuse it.

I found certain moments in the Leviathan DLC to be pretty creepy, and I liked it. I wouldn't say no to more of that.

ME had horror elements.

Horror elements in BioWare games tend to be thematic more than explicit.

For example, the way broodmothers are created...the way organics are transformed into reaper units... the Leviathans... etc

There still are explicit horror elements though.

I still remembering freaking out when we first encounter Banshees in ME3. The way they stab you with their sharp nails if they get close to you scared me shitless. Every time I encounter them I kite like crazy so I can avoid that death cutscene again.

There's also the husks which pin you down. That's just fking freaky. Nothing worse than loss of control. Indoctrination comes to mind.

There's that one crashed ship that's about to fall down a cliff that seriously plays on people's vertigo. Every time you move a little, the ship shakes. I was so relieved when we got off.

Indoctrination. Dragon teeth. Huskification. Collector manipulation of Protheans. Collector pods. Reapers making shock troops from various species. Cerberus implanting their own troops. Gray goo. The baby human reaper.

I think there were horror elements sprinkled throughout the series.

I found the adjandts*sp* pretty creepy first time I did the Omega DLC well the build up to them at least. Dark room hearing a skitter or sound once in a while with bodies in the room, made me wish that they had attacked in the dark. But I like that kind of scare in games where sometimes you get a lot of build up but are left waiting for a pay off not knowing if something is going to attack you or not.  Not sure if more stuff like that would really fit ME though but if they can find a way to make it work, good on them.

That one scene in ME2 where you get to experience what happens to humans if you don't get them out of those pods. It could be someone you know if you don't get there fast enough.

Watching them scream as they turn to goo. I was like.

I'm reminded of that mission in ME1 where the crew of a small cargo ship that ventured into the Perseus Veil came back with everyone converted to husks. While the execution could obviously be better, it's still a pretty good setup. I love the idea of happening across an abandoned settlement or derelict ship and discovering something horrible happened there, and threatens to take you with it when you investigate.

I think ME2 didn't really capture that feeling with the Collectors, though Lillith had a convincingly bloody murder scream.

I am fine with some horror -- as long as it is not the main theme of the game and is not over done.

If anything, I want the new Mass Effect to be a cross of Mass Effect 2, Firefly, Star Wars: Episode VI, Stargate: Universe, and just a tiny drop of Farscape.

I suppose what I am stating is that I want the next Mass Effect to be a Space Opera with dark, light, and gray themes -- with mystery, romance, emotions, some serious and humorous dialogue, a big space battle, and I want to be a rogue-ish smuggler while doing it.

To me, space horror is okay, I just would not want it to be the main theme or feel. I love dim and dark environments, but not horror dark. I like night life dark -- think Omega or Illium.

Also, I do like my enemies to be creepy, but not Dead Space level creepy. I think the Collectors were the perfect level of sick creepiness.

Reaper IFF and the Collector ship was a bit too creepy for my taste it's is a sci fi game not a horror i'd rather it be more like star trek are star wars and not like  james cameron's Aliens.

Mass Effect has it's own level of being scary. It's not high but I prefer it this way. They may add a little bit, but not too much. I'm glad Leviatan is DLC because I'm scared of sea (secretly would love to play it and be afraid of everything).

I only hope they won't go in DAI direction. There is completly nothing to be afraid while we can enter realm of nightmares!

Totally fine with stumbling onto the odd ghost ship. There were three (sorta) in ME1, the aforementioned husk mission, the Cerberus freighter infested with Rachni, and the one with the insane biotic keeping her brain dead husband on life support. ME2 had the derelict space station, the Collector Cruiser, and the Reaper IFF missions.

Its the isolation element, the feeling of being trapped far from where you could get help. That's why I'd go as far to say that most horror uses isolation scenarios.

I'm fine with the horror elements that are present within the setting; I just want BioWare to follow through with what they introduce. Don't talk about how this one alien species lays eggs in peoples' brains and the horrifying implications of birthing, but don't show us anything involving that process. If you don't want to introduce such graphic elements, that's fine, just don't try and have it both ways. Either have the horror element and show us what makes it horrifying, or don't include said element.

Show don't Tell.

I would like to see more horror elements in ME. So long as they don't put TOO much effort into it, that is. It's just not a central focus in mass effect games.

The first ME had the most spooky elements in the games. Especially in the ship with the crew turned into husks. The most scary thing is that it had a lot of corners, and the husks could come from anywere. And that aways made me tense, wondering when I would get ambushed again. A good setup for Andromeda would be a mission like that, exploring a claustrofobic ship were enemies could creep up on you at any moment. And being cut off from your team would make things even better, since having to face the unknown alone is aways more scary.
