May 2010, a film was officially announced.

Unfortunately, Legendary pictures has announced that the film will follow Male Shepard through the story of the original game.

This is a big problem!

In Mass Effect, the player is able to chose the gender of Shepard and make choices that direct the outcome of the game. The player controls everything from the relationship between characters, to the personality of Shepard.

While I am sure there are people out there who would be happy to see any Mass Effect film, every fan I have encountered doesn’t want to see this project move forward. It’s anecdotal, but it’s the only evidence I have.

A film based around Shepard can’t make everyone happy. In all likelihood, it’ll make almost no one happy.

So, what is to be done?

Luckily, BioWare has created an extremely rich and expansive universe in Mass Effect. There are any number of directions they could go without featuring a story with Shepard.

One idea is to follow Lieutenant Anderson during The First Contact War. It would be a great way to introduce a larger audience to the Mass Effect universe. And, as far as casting is concerned, I’m partial to having Anthony Mackie play Anderson.

It might even make since to go to a time after the defeat of the Reapers.

I think it would be a big mistake to try and launch a new franchise by alienating the fanbase. And, I think any film that follows the life of Shepard will do that.

I was wondering what it might look like it Mass Effect did a Marvelesque movie franchise. So I made a little poster.

The second movie in a Mass Effect franchise would take us back to The First Contact War. Here's a concept poster:

Live action movies made from games suck and hopefully Mass Effect: The Movie remains in development hell.

However, a Mass Effect TV series could potentially work.

A movie trilogy/quadrilogy would be nice... but hopefully we'll get a better ending... please?  I want my pure 100% vanilla ending where the Quarian& Geth peace takes effect (and we get to see how Rannoch changes with them co-operating), the Reapers and Cypher's logic doesn't over-ride the will of the galactic species desire to live on, and Shepard somehow gets them to gag on their own logical thinking.  They learn how to avoid indoctrination not just from the reapers, but the leviathans as well.    EDI lives and the rest of the galaxy learns the lesson of AI.   Don't try to kill your synthetics because they become self aware.

It shouldn't be just about Shepard, but it should show how Shepard brings everyone all together to survive.

I, for one, definitely want a large, big screen Mass Effect film or series of films to happen.

If the theater movie experience is too much then partner with HBO or Netflix or something and get these made in episodic but high quality formats like has been done with Game of Thrones.

I mean for goodness sake WoW has a movie and the ME series has infinitely better story and characters (IMO) than WoW ever had.

When the film was announced I literally danced with joy. And now 5 years have gone by without a peep. Please do not forget this.

If they're making any adaptations, it will focus from the point of MEA rather the original trilogy.

I imagine the project is stuck in development hell. There are hours and hours of content in the first entry of the game franchise, and condensing that down into a single film is a huge undertaking.

One thing that is problematic is the fact that screenwriters are usually hired based on their body of work, and the success of the films. It makes financial sense, but really, for a franchise like this, you need someone who is not only hugely talented, but also a real fan of the franchise. It's not just about making a cohesive story, it's about trying to balance that with fan expectations.

And... fan expectations are going to be overwhelming. Since the story of the game is so self-directed, it's inevitable that the film is going to disappoint some fans. And, it can't be about just picking the most common decisions made by players. Remember, there are a lot of people who play these games, but who aren't necessarily fans.

The film franchise is going to have to stand on its own. It'll be a version of the events from the game, but not a recreation.

Also, I think it is way more important to put this project into the hands of someone who is passionate about the story, the characters, and the franchise, then simply giving it to a big name director.

Just putting this out there because, why not?

I'm a screenwriter and would totally write up a draft on spec, if I could get a guarantee that someone at Legendary would read it.

P.S. I've been rated a Top Spec by SpecScout, and had a script move into the second round of the Austin Film Festival last year. Also, I'm a huge Mass Effect fan.
