In the best case scenario the protagonist has no own personality but many options to express what you imagine him/her to be.

What about a fusion of the Paragon/neutral/renegade system with the Da personality system? This way we would have a wide array of possibilities in wich we could roleplay our characters. The dialogue choices would be pretty much like DA:I with the emotion Icons (with the option to turn them off) and the game analyses the outcome that choice into Paragon/Neutral/Renegade. Giving us sacastic options that can eater be Paragon or Renegade, same for ruthless and calm ones, since most renegade dialogues in the trilogy made Shepard start shouting or become violent, and that's not the only way a person can be ruthless. Give us the option to keep our cool and be serene while still doing some morally grey stuff!

Since it is the player character the writers and voice actors will make him/her as neutral as possible.  This is why at times the voice acting of bioware players is criticized for being too bland, it is really by design.

 

For every person that says it would be great to be more sarcastic!  there are two that will say, 'I would never act that way.'

Renegade = Kathryn Janeway

 

I'd say Sisko was the Renegade of that trio - the latter turned really ruthless a couple times during the Dominion War. Janeway was actually pretty consistent in insisting that they continue to uphold Starfleet/Federation principles while they were stuck in the Delta Quadrant, though she had her "Renegade" moments here and there.

how about the game give us the opportunity thru dialogue wheel and choices to actually craft Ryder's personality. and perhaps make it a tangible thing that we can look at via some GUI to see the progress of our character and what kinda person Ryder is turning out to be?

I think even if that were the case, Ryder is no less a legitimate name and surname that has been worn by a number of different people, some fictional and some non-fictional, from different walks of life: some were earls, some were actors, some were poets, some were military, some were wrestlers, some were athletes, some were politicians and so forth.

 

Basically people who would not fit the definition of the silly "trashy white girls".

Jean Luc Picard is paragon done right. If Ryder has a scene even remotely as epic this one, I'd have no complaints about the paragon path, or whatever its equivalent is.
