So, the more I play with PUGs, the more I keep wanting to solo. And since I can solo Bronze/Silver pretty easily, even if unequiped and underleveled, it's probably time I moved up. Right now, my only Gold solos are 36-43mins as a Juggernaut (no Adrenaline mod, so slow af to move). I've also Duo'd Gold a few times with various characters (Mostly Biotics).

So, to those of you who actually do this regularly, I'm ready to get addicted to your solo-crack, what advice would you give to ensure somebody gets as hooked as you on soloing?

What do you do when enemies refuse to kite and love to camp that device you just can't seem to get a crack at? Devices is my biggest bane, hacks/escorts you can usually kite enough of the spawn to brute force the ones left at the circle, but sometimes, that just isn't the case with devices (Atleast for me).

Also, I play on PS3, so no objective hacking/setting.

Giant White and Ghost should be your start: defensible, bullshit free and very few problems with map navigation

My suggestion is to start with Geth so you understand exactly how ridiculous Plat can get; sure it's all smiles and rainbows at first but then wave 7 starts and you begin to understand that even @30fps will not save you from corner shots and point black super pewpew combined with melee stagger.

Start with either Krogan or Batarian Soldier, and go from there.

Devices can be real bastards (though targets are probably worse for plat solos), and in my experience sometimes you'll get enemies/spawns/device locations that just won't cooperate no matter what you do (stupid Atlas, camping the device).  Kite if you can, missile if you can't, and probably fail if neither of those work. Pretty rare to get a completely unworkable objective, though it does happen occasionally (especially on certain maps).

And one thing that really got me hooked on solos was doing the themed challenges, both the solo ones and the duos/trios/full team. Probably something about having some sort of structure and set goals that makes it really satisfying, at least for me.

I don't even blame you bro. Yesterday I failed a Gold game. GOLD. Some Pugs lv1 decoys (n7 matching cp) kept bleeding on me all the time. I got stabbed by a f@cking Phantom, koniec.

Thing is, there are people who have soloed a lot more and can give you a good advice. Tons of videos around. What I learned from experience is that solos are (and feel) totally different compared to a pug game. You have to be extra carefull (no greedy shots), super aware of your surroundings (have eyes on your back), always take your time (think twice, act once) and go with the kit you're most proficient with. Noveria is a great map. If you get devices, don't lose your cool, just guide the spawn away and do it on your own pace. Also, Claymore goes with everything.

Once you'll get it done, you'll feel amazing. At least I did.

Use the most forgiving possible setup until you can ace it. This is subjective, and varies from player to player. Examples would be TGI harrier vs. Cerb, Flamer GT vs. Reapers, Krogan Vanguard vs. Geth, etc. Giant and White are generally the most forgiving maps, Glacier to a lesser extent. IMO, u have to be really competitive (against yourself) to enjoy soloing - it's a lot more stressful than pugging.

*edit: if you watch enough of someone else soloing, and pay attention to detail, you'll pick up little things that help you progress FAST.

U have an extremely unique profile mission_scrubbed.
Probably the first case of non-biotic/non tec dependant playstyle with a pure soldier cp profile, I've seen.

I would just love to c our brute force plat soldier solo's.
your signature seems to be
* Cerberus,
* shotguns (the usual claymoar, wraith, atx,)
* Earth masterer (using only a N7 destroyer, n7 demolisher to finish that challenge )
* Probably this game is way too easy for you - you didnt even waste time to "practice" solo on bronze /silver and dived directly into gold & plat solo's.

(Or is this an alias under a hat?)

Wow!

As for the rest, kudos sir, you did find out a lot. I don't do challenges, I like Cerberus and I used to play with Destroyer and Demolisher. Still like those guys. But I'm in deep love with HSol + Claymoar + GC. Anything other than that bores me to death. I'm Adrenaline addicted.

If you know how to upload videos on youtube larger than 15 minutes, let me know, that thing is bugging me for some time now.

Be ready to redo. A bad objective can destroy a game even for the most skillful soloist. You might also get lucky/unlucky with the spawns and nuking, it's not crucial on gold but can mean a lot in more difficult platinum games. These are things you can't control, so don't get too upset by them.

On top of that, every death or near-death costs you consumables, so many a solo will end prematurely because you'll simply run out (or you'll quit if you get to w6 with only 2 gels). And with games that last 45+ min you run the risk of failing on late waves due to loss of focus and/or accumulation of adrenaline (your mileage may vary).

Bottom line, don't go in expecting that you'll finish every solo you start on your first attempt, and don't get discouraged when you don't, it's normal.

And if you want to learn without reinventing the wheel, watch some videos, you can find a whole lot of them in the Platinum Solo HoF, Gold Speedrun HoF and Themed Challenges threads. Most of these are on PC and rely on 'clever use of game mechanics' that I'm not sure you can do on consoles, but Loufi solos on a console, check out his stuff here.

In addition to the mechanics/spawn knowledge, one thing, that most soloists seem to have in common is L10 weapons (UR/R/...). I'm wondering if there was ever a solo with <L5 weapons... So there seems to be a specific timeframe where this becomes possible to solo...

I do it for role-playing and the atmosphere sometimes or to practice dodging the Prime siege pulse barrage. Then I shout: "EH! THAT ALL YOU GOT?" and they give me their rocket drone.

Tried a solo with Harrier III on a TGI. Made it to w7 before I wiped. At that point, the DPS was just too low. Interestingly enough, with the Argus X I managed w8, but that could have been just luck. That reminds me that I still need to finish my second gold solo, doh!

Do your first few solos with whatever kit you like on whatever map you like and whatever weapon you like. If that gets dull, go here:

Themed Challenge and Hall of Fame Group.

Basically I would have quit soloing years ago (which would have meant quitting the game altogether since the only reason I started soloing was terrible internet that basically wasn't playable on any host) but the Themed Challenge Thread and the Group that eventually formed added some structure to it.

There's also a very nice difficulty curve built into the challenge series: Neufchatel Series is the easiest, and almost all solos there are entry level maps/kits/weapons.

The N7 Challenge Series is tiered based on difficulty so it's a good next place to go after the Neufchatel Series. I highly doubt anyone who makes it from N1 to N7 on any difficulty can say that they didn't improve at soloing from start to finish.

There's a Turian Themed Series, which is Best Series.

The Hall of Fame also has the most varied collection of videos from all platforms, featuring all kinds of weapons, kits, maps, and enemies.  It's nice also to compare your times to what others have submitted and see areas where you can improve. Back when I started I used to have a special reserved spot at the bottom of every completion list in the first Weekly Challenge Series, but it was always a good learning experience in how much worse I was than everyone else and what I could learn from their videos.

If you run into a device you can't get, just quit or fail it and take your money and XP.  There are plenty of device locations / faction combinations that are extremely difficulty to get and will depend a bit on where the previous device was and some luck.  Some maps are a lot crappier than others overall as well.

Battlemaster, Batarian Soldier, TGI, and GTS are probably all easier to solo with than Juggernaut.

Battlemaster is boring as hell.... except for Carnage builds (I'm pretty sure that's NOT what you were talking about though). Been pondering BatSol, mostly because I just love shooting things with the Saber, and solo I'd have lots of things to shoot with it. Probably wont do TGI, I hate his rocket boots so much, wont even use him for Bronze solos. I wish I could disable the stupid things, I'd rather have no dodge. Geth trooper is another possibility, wallhaxing Typhoon with flamer is pretty fun.

Also, the reason why Juggernaut is "easy" for me (on Gold) is because I'm very familiar with the character (whom I play very aggressively), I know exactly how much damage everything does on him (both dealing to and dealt by), which helps when running Power Amps instead of Adrenaline/Cyclonic. I just don't take him to Platinum, even with a team, I find he draws too much aggro to be aggressive on Platinum, though my best score yet is still with him on Platinum.

How does a pet-focused VolSent do? I've had a lot of success aggro dumping with him in a team, but how well does the decoy/drone then cloak work for aggro-dumping when solo?

What about the Cabal? She has good DoT and Biotic Focus?

I've also done quite a few Silver solos with the Asari Vanguard (Charge for heals, Harrier and Lift Grenades for damage, no stasis), does she work on Gold too?

Of course she does. But if you're not using Stasis, she's just an inferior Drellguard.

Very well VS Geth. With both pets active on the map, the robots will rarely approach you, especially with the Shock evos. Of course, the solo will not be super fast (unless you use the Reegar), so your patience will be tested, but surviving on the most solos friendly maps should not be too difficult.

She is a solid character for solos too. Good level of health and shields, good mobility and a healing power. I would play her VS Cerberus. The sequence Acolyte shot + Nightshade blades can trivialyze Phantoms if you want to. You will just need a good anti-armor weapon alongside for Atlases.

Lift Grenades are excellent mooks killers, so the asari vanguard can be a good choice against Cerberus and Geth. I would avoid Reapers and Collectors, too many big armors to destroy for her. Stasis can be helpful at times (notably for objectives and has a quick freeze button), so I would put 3 ranks in it (I don't see the last rank of the weapon passives mandatory with this character).

Glad to get some specific feedback on my thoughts from a known soloist. Also good to see my ideas aren't too far off. Will have to try them next time my wife has a big project for her work.
