Ryder probably isn't the PC. We saw a single, loose dog tag with that name. Why would the PC separate his or her dog tags and leave the primary one floating around. Ryder is most likely the N7 character from the trailer and he most likely dies.

But how could he be dead at the moment of departure, but not in Andromeda?

Seriously. Not in any future Bioware RPG, ever.

why not it would be better for marketing purposes maybe one of the reasons bioware  killed off commander shepard was because the character was a marketing nightmare can you imagine the  marketing people are like is commander shepard a meal or female? lol why do you think the mass effect movie never released  ?

The gender option for Commander Shepard couldn't possibly be the reason they're moving on from the character. It's a far bigger issue that the character can be dead, a reaper god or the slayer of all things synthetic, in a galaxy that can change in so many ways throughout that it would be a nightmare to try to account for any if not all of these things in future installments set in the same place in a future timeline.

As for marketing, I don't see how that's much of an issue. They can either use a neutral trailer, or they can simply have two versions for male and female respectively. That isn't really a big deal.

As for the movie, if it was truly the gender options that would keep it in development hell, then all's I can say is thank the Maker for the gender option. May that not-film forever stay in the void.

They finished Shepard's story because their story was done being told, but they didn't die in every ending world state. The possibility of playing as both a male and a female is one of the things Bioware is known for, and yet every time they release a promo that depicts just one gender, there are still some people who jump to the conclusion that particular gender is the only option. It's a little silly.

If that's the case I'm betting his full name is Rychard Ryder.

don't misunderstand me i was commenting on what i think bioware would do not what i want bioware to do i actually prefer my protagonist to have no background story to he/she i want to make my own story ....i do think bioware will give us a more developed backstory with the new protagonist.

Well, so am I. At this point, reducing player options to only one gender of protagonist in either the Mass Effect or Dragon Age franchises is one of the last things Bioware is likely to do.

Do we actually need gender titles? For most occasions we'll be referring to the character regardless of gender and for others it shouldn't be hard to drop a gendered pronoun in the same sentence. When gender is directly relevant to the conversation it doesn't seem much to spend an extra word on clarity.

I don't disagree, but I see this thread as less about whether we need these titles and more about trying to predict what kind of name will end up being the most common, which is interesting to consider ahead of time. I made a similar thread once about what we'll end up calling the first 3 games in the future, although this is arguably even more fun to speculate on :)

You make a good point, though, don't get me wrong.

I think there was a dev tweet about some secrets being hidden in the trailer... or something to that effect. Plus, this trailer wasn't exactly a string of strongly coherent cutscenes, but rather mixed with authentic footage and a voice-over that seemed to address us as players rather than existing in-universe. I doubt the dogtags were meant to make perfect sense in the way you describe :P

I'm quite sure that players aka customers are more important with huge thing like that than marketing people are.

Bioware would alienate A LOT of people if they'd cut the gender option. Marketing can handle a male and female protagonist just fine.

I don't think anyone aside from DarkLordAngel916 is seriously entertaining the notion that there wouldn't be a choice of gender with Andromeda. It was even confirmed, however unnecessary it seemed for most of us, by Bioware themselves:

You will play a human, male or female, (...)

What?

You're saying that he's character from the trailer, but his dogtag is shown in N7 day video. So when he is supposed to die?

After what we see in the trailer? The N7 video isn't a series of chronological events. It's fanservice with some clues and reveals.

Someone said Rydude.
Hahaha. It's sweet and even funnier in Finnish.

I gotta google this now.

Edit: couldn't find it. But there's a guy called

Ry Dude

Whos a faculty member of some american place and I think has the coolest name that isn't Max Power or Conrad Verner.
