I'm not sure then unless you've remembered wrong. According to the weird formula,

Garrus:  4

Grunt:    4

Thane:   2

Legion:  2

Samara: 2

Jacob:   2

Jack:     1

Mordin:  1

Total: 18, Average 2.25. An average of 2 or higher should get you everyone alive. When you took Grunt instead of Tali, that would drop your total to 15 and therefore the average to 1.9, so Mordin would die. If you took Mordin, Tali would die, but you said Miranda and Mordin, so Grunt holding the line should have resulted in no deaths.

On that note, if I ever go play ME3 again, I should replay my Talimancer and have her die on the ship. I'm curious what Shepard would say, particularly to Garrus. Or if I did LotSB after...

I'm pretty sure that what I told you is how everything was set up in that playthrough.  I had even checked on BSN when I initially ran into the issue and found no real answers.

As I said, I'm just assuming that it glitched, which is the most likely answer.

So I shouldn't mention that in 3/4 of my runs I have already/or are planning too, murder at least 3 different ppl each time in the SM?

Okay then, I'll just see myself to the door....

I've done all the missions/assignments/upgrades.  Everyone's loyal, including Legion.  The crew just got abducted.  I'm ready to go through the Omega 4 Relay.  EXCEPT...  I'd like to make a quick stop over at the Shadow Broker Base to respec Legion, because I'm thinking about using him in the Suicide Mission.

Will that count as a mission and get crew members killed?

No and no.

Spoiler

for those who might not know, there is a thread just for the suicide mission. Any question that he/she may have can be asked in that thread and someone will have an answer

*Raises hand* I'm guilty of that as well :P

In fact, I mainly use those flow charts to see how I can kill a certain person now. Call me evil, but it does add variety to a playthrough!

Don't feel bad. Its very rare that I have everyone survive. Its called a suicide mission and I make sure at least 1 character  is killed.

Hah!  Same.  I saved everyone once, but then I had to kill the crew just to throw some angst in there.  Shep needs ghosts, a weight on his/her shoulders that pushes them on to save the world.  Can't have it all happy clappy unicorns now can we?  Plus I wanna see what it's like when ppl die.  :D

Except Garrus, he don't ever die mmkay.

The bold section is actually true for the dream sequences to have their intended dramatic and story effect. Shepard will hear lines of dialogue from dead crewmates. If they didn't die, you don't hear them and the dreams are just painfully boring and slow sections you hate.

Sadly I killed Miranda, Thane and Legion last time and I never even noticed there was anything in the dreams!   So they were 'painfully boring and slow' lol, maybe I didn't listen hard enough.  Now I know this I'll pay attention this time.  Kasumi, Thane and Mordin are for the chop so I'll be listening veryyyyy carefully.

Well they still will be, but the lines at least give them some emotional value. Try putting on subtitles. It's probably hard to hear the actual lines over the noise and the "Shepard" whispers.

You've got the perfect playthrough for it too, in my opinion. Padok Wiks, Mordin's replacement is really good and has great lines Shepard can hear in the dream. It's a crime that he is gated behind killing off Mordin, another great character and one for whom the Tuchanka mission is the completion of his character arc. Wiks will still be on Surkesh either way though.

True, it's a lot more realistic when at least one person dies during the suicide mission. Makes it more urgent and impressive. I like having everyone together during the Citadel party but letting some people die makes for a better story, I think. Also, some parts of ME3 (like Grissom) are genuinely better without the ME2 squad members in them.

Grissom is better without Jack? Why? I haven't tried it. I have beaten ME1 and 2 several times but that ending killed any desire to replay ME3. I started my "jerk Shepard" but didn't get far.

Exactly!

Also yes, Garrus never dies! I just.. can't. It's an empty galaxy without him.
Though I'm making myself do it in my next playthrough, just to see the other content. Not looking forward to it :( Though Traynor has some nice extra dialogue if Garrus is gone, I've heard.

There's more focus on the students and their battle against Cerberus. There's a lot more struggle and not everyone gets out of it alive, unfortunately. I can really recommend going through Grissom without Jack at least once.

One thing I like about ME3 is how Garrus talks to Shepard about a lot of the things that go on in the game. It makes Shepard a bit more of an actual person and shows that people think about the things that are happening around them. Bonus points for the progression of their relationship across the series from protege to battle buddy. Is there someone to take that confidant role?

I decided he'd be the one who never died when I learnt from other ppl that there's barely any difference.  You only get a couple of mentions then that's it.  It breaks my heart because I think Garrus should be vital to ME3, so if he's dead there should be a huge difference somewhere along the line.  Maybe a mission that's much harder or something like that.

To know that all you get is a couple of lines of dialogue is a big plot hole I'm intent on avoiding, so I'll never do it.  I don't want to experience how 'not needed' Garrus actually is.  :(

Yeah, that's what I love about him in ME3 as well. He doesn't have an important role in the main story but I love his conversations with Shepard about the missions and the current state of the galaxy. He keeps Shepard's feet on the ground in a way, whether as a love interest, friend or collegue.

I know that Traynor replaces him in one scene, and Liara stays on Palaven's moon if Garrus is gone. But apart from that, I don't think there's a lot of replacement content either. You just basically miss loads of stuff when he's gone. I'm still curious how ME3 feels without him, but I know it's not going to be the same :( The fact I'm going to miss him makes him needed to me, haha.

Thanks, I like Traynor's dialogue there! Too bad Garrus needs to be dead for Traynor to have more content.
