Assuming all the following are loyal (except Miranda):

Tali, Legion, or Kasumi in the vents.

Garrus or Miranda as 2nd fireteam leader.

Tali or Mordin as escort.

Samara or Jack as Biotic Shield

Garrus or Miranda as 2nd fireteam leader.

Tali or Mordin, whichever is left, as one of your two final squad mates. The other one also has to be Loyal.

Grunt, if loyal, can almost hold the line by himself at the end.

Grunt will hold the line by himself. The same can be said for Garrus and Zaeed. I never tested it when they were not loyal. Maybe one day I might.

Speaking of Samara dying, I have yet to be able to find a vid of Lesuss with her dead. You do still get the mission, right? Who's her replacement? Or is it that there's no character replacement and you just get no cutscenes till you meet Samara's youngest?

From what I remember there is no additional scene until meeting Falere. But later on the squad mates will have some new lines I think. I haven't played it myself yet, but BSN member cap and gown has a playthrough of the monestary with Samara dead and it was really interesting :)

Here's the video if interested:

Actually, I've just restarted the suicide mission for the fourth time, all characters loyal, all ship upgrades done. If I pick Tali for the vent and Miranda as 2nd fire team leader, Tali dies every single time, contrary to what most walkthroughs say

EDIT: the problem is Miranda. Due to some sort of glitch, although she is loyal (i.e. I have completed her loyalty mission and unlocked her extra ability and outfit) the system behaves as if she isn't. She's the only crew member to die at the end of the mission, whatever combination of choices I make (I've replayed the suicide mission a total of 9 times - my wife was away for the weekend)

Either you have a glitch or one or both are not loyal.

Found the answer. I was not aware of this, but you can "lose" Miranda's loyalty after earning it if you support Jack in the argument they have about Cerberus. For some reason the Charm option was grayed out and I supported Jack. Bugger.

Yes. It can go either way and happens between Tali and Legion also. You can regain the loyalty with another check if you go to the "loser" of the argument immediately after.

They should they would each still have a hold the line score of 3 if not loyal, if I remember right.

That's true. I don't know if anyone has tested to see if those characters can hold the line or not by themselves if not loyal. LIke i  said. One day I will test it out to see if they do.

Its also said if a character has a score of 2, that character should be able to hold the line. That is incorrect. I've left a character by him/herself a few times to see if they can hold the line, and they have always died.

I used this is plotting out my WORST possible Mass Effect playthrough, in which I wanted to witness the deaths of as many squad members as possible through the games.

Which characters? Garrus, Grunt, and Zaeed are the only characters above 2. Mordin, Tali, Jack, and Kasumi are always below 2 and the rest are only at 2 if loyal.

Jacob, Thane, Miranda, Samara, Legion

I've never had anything random because I play it the same way to be safe (upgrade the Normandy's armor, cannon and shields, do all loyalty quests and go straight to the relay after the crew is kidnapped). I did however get Thane instead of Jack when they were holding the line, because I took Jacob and Miranda to the final fight instead of Thane and Tali/Garrus like I usually do. Everyone survived.

Nothing wrong with that.

I like doing different stuff for the mission to see the results. Its not hard having everyone survive if a couple of sqauadmates are not recruited and not completing all loyalty missions.

I think what I like most, is even if I play it safe, if I switch up the characters, I always get different dialogue. I took Miranda and Jacob and watched Miranda resign as the TIM ordered her to stop Shepard, plus I destroyed the base instead of saved it, making ME3 and Cerberus' hate more fitting within the story too. I also like how the sun changes from red to blue if you destroy the base, or remains red if you keep it.

I would definitely recommend having Mordin die on the SM at least once. His replacement in ME3, Padok Wiks, is an interesting character. I would also recommend having Jack die at least once. Grissom Academy plays out very differently without Jack. Or you could do a non-import version of ME3 to see how Grissom plays out without Jack if you can't bring yourself to kill her. Having Thane die during the SM will change up how the Citadel coup plays out. If Captain Kirahee survived ME1 and Thane died in ME2, Kirahee will replace Thane when Kai Leng tries to kill the Salarian Councilor. To see how it would play out if both Kirahee and Thane are dead in ME3 you can play a non-import version of ME3. Grunt's replacement in ME3 is also worth meeting at least once. You can meet Grunt's stand-in by doing a non-import game.

Urdnot Dagg. I like him!

Generally I think all replacements are worth to see at least once, and even the Ardat-Yakshi Monastery without Samara. Different dialogue everywhere! So much to try out, so little time :D

I still have to do Cerberus Coup with neither Thane nor Kirrahe present.

I know how the others play out, but the Thane/Kirahee one is my next plan. I loved changing things up for this Paragade playthrough I'm doing.

I like him as well. Too bad he dies

Could always to a default ME3 playthrough for that to happen

Oh well, and here I am trying to get most of my team killed. In particular, I want only humans to survive. And I think I have a plan. Buhahahahaha!

I never went to see Thane on the Citadel before the Coup so it was Kirrahee that sacrificed himself. Good thing. I'd rather Thane have a peaceful death off screen than jumping on Kai Leng's sword while Shepard watches, then have their stupid funeral scene, the main point of which is the line about praying for Shepard. yuck

I always got this vibe that he was foreshadowing the end during that scene, and then Shepard saying

Spoiler

sounds a bit grim and hinting at his/her death too.

Well it could be foreshadowing Shepard's death or meant to be foreboding so that survival feels more earned and impressive. However, depending on the playthrough you may or may not have something Shepard needs forgiveness or redemption for.

I felt more or less like the game was telling me Shepard's screwed no matter what

If romanced you can "meet him across the sea" but to tell him he won't be alone for long sounds like Shepard saying they will die too, same as meeting Garrus at the bar.

I usually play as a Shepard who refuses to let it end in death no matter how much death keeps following her.
