In recent times, I've been playing a lot of SWTOR, finally experiencing the insane depth and breadth of content offered by one of Bioware's recent games.
It's still something I could talk about a lot, because it's been quite a bit of fun. For starters, there are eight different class story quests to go through, Eight! In WoW in recent times, people were excited to have the Warlock class quest, which of course was nice, but also it helped me be amazed that SWTOR could feature as many as 8 different unique storylines, built over the course of basically the entire leveling arc of your character and through many different worlds.
The one I did, the Sith Inquisitor, was appropriately Sith and Inquistorial, which is even more interesting considering I've read people say the Sith Inquisitor was actually one of the plainer ones, well it still satisfied me!
Anyway, from what I've done on the Jedi Knight, it feels underplayed and not so obviously in your face kind of heroic story you get told, it's more like people who are used to that kind of thing and trying to make things more subtle and interesting. I'm also interested in trying out more but as said it's a lot of content!
I went and listened to some older interviews and found a lot of the things to be true for me as I was playing
They mentioned for instance the first time you get on your ship and I agree totally! It's very cool to have an MMO where you feel like the game is trying to make you feel cool and have fun, the ship but also I noticed the strongholds are really well done and have a lot of detail in them also, they make you feel like you are once again just kind of hero and an adventurer.
This permeates a lot of quests and small details as well.
On the choice and consequence side, I'd have to say it was done better than most Choice and Consequence games just period even some of Bioware's own titles, for instance the choices between saving or destroying civilians of the Republic kept coming up and made me think about the status of non-combatants in wartime. It seems to me, the lines between civilians and combatants are sometimes blurred, some civilians benefit from and make a large gain off of the state they support, and some civilians are just nominal members of the state, and who may in fact not want to be part of the state but aren't really their by choice.
In the end though, I would usually collapse them as the types to be actively supporting, and thus military personnel, especially considering they were usually for whatever reason stationed on military bases. Civlians on military bases huh? Sounds FISHY
But of course, for everyone of those decisions I also play the Jedi side and take all the light side to see how that goes, and it's amazing how compelling just a straightforwardly heroic tale can be. I like just doing things because they are good, and not for any complicated reason, or because it seems like a nice thing to do and not because anyone is compelling my character. Both the light side and dark side feel fleshed out to make you think about the decisions more and not feel hamfisted, the black talon instance was one of the early ones and whether on light side or dark side, and whichever the decision, it was definitely a fairly powerful video game experience
Dragon Age 2 and other Bioware games made choices easier, instead of having to deal with thorny issues I was offered the ability to avoid them entirely, characters and leaders would simply say "These are just too difficult to make," or "No one is really right in this case," or in other instances, just have the choice taken away and a fight commence.
The reality is though those interesting choices made the Bioware company the name it is to me now, at any rate.
As for the rest of the game, all the interfaces and polish are really something, it's honestly amazing to me they made such a strong game, and well, I guess plenty of people played it, but I still am kind of surprised to not see it more popular. It's certainly far and above lots of other AAA game fare I've come across in recent times.
Here are some of the images and things that kind of struck me a long the way.
I also couldn't help but notice in the middle of some fierce space fighter battles, that the backgrounds could be quite amazing and detailed as well.
Anyway, it's been a fun time, and hopefully there will be more in the future. I couldn't help but notice Knights of the Fallen Empire changed companions to make the game itself considerably easier, which I don't know if I approve of that, it was nice to have a more hardcore and challenging game, one where I had to think about abilities and encounters more than most, but at least the majority of the rest of the game seems intact, although I do seem to level a bit faster as well to the point where I am a little ahead of most of the content in the game.
I don't know when MEA is coming out and there isn't any information about it, just like there isn't any information on the new IP. I am really disappointed they cancelled Shadow Realms because I'm pretty sure that would of been a lot of fun, but whichever direction they tend to go with these things, I hope they remember to learn from one of their very own games! SWTOR! Why? Because it's fun! It came out around the same time as ME3 but it seems maybe some people missed it! Plus, they've been doing updates since then and it seems a lot of people missed out on those too, such as the galactic starfighter and stronghold system which as mentioned before are pretty sparkly and cool!
And to finish off there is this cinematic from the intro which I think I posted somewhere around here one time, but it's got really one of the most intense lightsaber duels I've seen! ![]()
I've seen all the Star Wars movies and I can remember those pretty well but I think this might of even topped those! Wowza!
