Wasn't sure if this belonged in the ME 1 or ME 2 forum since it pertains to both.

That's more of a personal choice, but I would consider which is more important to you, the journey or the destination. For me, the journey is most important, and whenever I play any franchise, I have to do each game in the series back to back, whether it is ME, Dead Space, or whatever else. So personally, I would start with ME 1, b/c I value the continuity of the emotional experience above all else. If your higher priority is to enjoy the final result of all your efforts, accomplishments and choices at the end of the trilogy, then just pick up where you left off with ME 2, or start anew with ME 2, and rely on the codecs. I'm too obsessive-compulsive about "not breaking a set" to pick up or drop off a series part ways through.

My recommendation would be to take that ME1 character and start a new game plus with it. (That is, start a new game of ME1 where you select an existing ID.) A new game plus Shepard will start out at the level you finished the previous run and level up from there. Shepard will also start out with all the equipment and money you had when you ended the first run. By doing a new game plus you can skip various side missions that do not interest you and do not have any impact in later titles, but still have all the XP you would have had had you done all those side missions. So, for instance, you could skip surveying minerals, collecting ID tags, etc. You can consult the mass effect wikia to see which decisions in ME1 effect later games and restrict your playthrough of ME1 to just those quests that will have an impact later, but still have even greater XP at the end than you did from your original playthrough.
Doing an ME1 run again can also allow you to have a more recent context for the cameos of minor characters that will show up in later games since they will be fresh memories. And it will help you understand why they are reacting the way they are based on the choices you made in ME1.

If you're going thru to ME3 then I'd recommend starting again. ME3 has lots of references to ME1, especially in the Citadel. ME2 not so much, that's more a bunch of emails.
For the story to make sense and be as compelling and powerful as it was for me, you need to know who the heck everyone is and understand the world well. If you do you'll have moments of realisation where some thing that just happened is wayyyy more meaningful to you cause you remember the storyline from earlier, and the true meaning behind it or just how important it is to the world etc.
If you're not keen to retrace your steps, why not make another Shepard? I've done 2, 2 more planned, all who have different personalities and choices. You could make a femShep instead of guyShep (or the other way round) and do different things like save Ash over Kaidan or vice versa. Letting Ash shoot Wrex or doing it yourself has major repercussions in ME3 for the Genophage and Mordin, killing or saving the Rachni Queen etc etc.
Then, later on, you can pick up your old Shep where you left off cause you now know the game again and won't have to restart him/her.

I must be the only one on in the local cluster that enjoyed exploring the various planets in the Mako. Probably b/c I'm into astronomy and always thought it would be cool to visit other planets and star systems. What I did get sick of is scanning planets for resources in ME 2, and the inescapable feeling that it felt more like a checklist with each playthrough--recruit a character, do their mission. Rinse, repeat. So I share in your face scrunch, but only for ME 2.

Thanks everyone. See, my main problem is that every time I feel inclined to start Mass Effect from the beginning, and just as I've almost convinced myself to, my face always scrunches up in disgust at the thought of the horrible Mako stuff and resource gathering. I then immediately change my mind and decide not to play it. I suppose though, since I have a level 50 Shepard that I can play New Game plus with, the thought that I can just skip the majority of the Mako stuff when I start a second play through makes me feel a little better.
Hehe, I ignore it tbh. You don't need to do all the resource stuff or the planets, it's just xp. If I HAVE to go to one of the planets then sure, if there's something close by I'll go get it. Other than that it can all go to hell ![]()
