I'm on my second playthrough, playing as an S+S warrior, on nightmare, with friendly fire on.

My first playthrough I used a tempest rogue kiting tank, and sure, i got what i wanted with a two-handed Cassandra spamming Pommel Strike, Dorian spamming Spirit Mark, and Sera spamming Full Draw. For whatever reason I was inclined to play without using the tactical pause a lot more than in the first two games, and i ended up avoiding all risky AoE abilities to make that easier.

I've tried playing with friendly fire on but it just feels too slapdash, it feels wrong. Being careful in that sense has always appealed to me about these games, but now in my second playthrough I'm finding it hard to come up with a fresh dynamic. I'm willing to rely more on the pause this time, to allow me to use more AoE's, and give me more options, but even still, at level 13 i'm just not finding a groove.

It was my intention to play this time without using a mage, as I've just recently played through the first two games in that way, and had no problem, the problem I'm having here is I'm just not finding any satisfying combinations between my archers and warriors. I'm willing to include a mage to get past this, but I'm still not getting anywhere. Anyone else having a similar issue? specifically in comparison to the first two games?

Part of the problem, I'm thinking, is the prevalence of Rift fights. Everywhere you go, rift battles dominate, and the fact is Taunt does not work on Terrors, whether they're taunted or not they just teleport to your bank ranks and do damage. Then it's down to combat roll, and evade, and the chain thing, and so on, all the while getting knocked on your ass, even running two Templar tanks I cannot come up with a satisfying method to protect those back ranks, it makes the fights feel super sloppy. Anyone have any specific suggestions here?

I've even tried running four warriors, but then you've got the issue of chasing down shades and despair demons, which is just dumb.

Yeah get a mage for cc. Dorian is great as both horror and firewall are ff friendly. Static cage too and alternative walking bomb upgrade inward detonation for 900% damage is too. You can definitely spec him as a ff friendly mage. Payback strike those terrors to knock them down. Invest in critical chance and flow of battle even as sns to taunt more and spam Payback strike and shield bash in between the grappling chain and taunt. Despair demons can get panicked by horror and firewall. Your Archers should have stealth and leaping shot with stealth upgrade to shed aggro.

If those basics don't get it done than get another op ability like horn of valour fortifying blast and toxic cloud (on rogue) with elusive stacks. And masterwork crafting like veilstrike on the Archers bow or on your shield. Masterwork effects don't do aoe damage so even if you have chain lightning or anything else on your weapon it will be ff friendly. But that's a bit like cheating maybe.

You want a real challenge, and assuming you don't mind a few doors you can't open, Play an all mage team. one of each specialization, one of each primary ability tree. The cosest thing to a tank you have is the KE and, that works best if that's you so, Vivienne does not need her specialization, AI doesn't do well with it anyway.

If you put FF on, you'll be micromanaging them to keep AoE off you but, even without FF, it's a bit more challenging when the whole party is a tad squishy because you're all mages in cloth armor.

i'm planning on going through the whole trilogy this way, mages only, and maybe i've just run aground with warriors and rogues, maybe i should save all the dlc for the mage run.

when I do a hardcore pro mage Inquisitor, I run an all mage team and, just mark map locations if I need a rogue or warrir to get at something (like mosiac pieces behind locked doors that Stone Fist won't open.) and go back to camp, get who I need and do that one thing, then back to camp to go back to my mages.

In those games, if you aren't a mage, you might get out of Skyhold 2-3 times, one being your persoanl quest, if you have to go to do it.

I tend to go with 2 ranged 2 melee.

I quite like Reaver + Champion/Templar/KE + Necro/RM + Tempest/Artificer

that tends to be my way too .1 mage 1 rogue 2 warriors is usually my setup at least on the tougher main missions. I do sometimes switch out 1 warrior for a  Dual weilding rogue though too. Depends on the mission however as I do mix things up now and then.
