...and if that's indeed a reference to Sally Ride, then that is actually kind of fail in my book.

Why? Well, Alan Shepard (supposedly who Shep is named after) was behind Juri Gagarin by less then 2 months. Fine, I'll call that a draw.

On the other hand, Valentina Tereshkova beat Sally Ride by almost exactly 20 years, following only 2 years behind Gagarin.

So instead of cool scientific achievements, I'm reminded about US exceptionalism that ignores anything accomplished by non-Americans (also, how NASA was lightyears behind the eastern bloc re: equality).

And now that I started thinking about that, I'm also wondering: Isn't the Systems Alliance supposed to be a supra-national organization? According to the codex, it was founded by the eighteen largest nations of Earth. So I gotta wonder: Where are the Chinese, Germans, Japanese, Russians... ?

Sally Ride was the first American woman AND first LGBT astronaut, though. So there.

Also, since someone has to say it, GAY AGENDA!

I don't think there is a rule that says they have to use the first woman in space.

Also, Kasumi is Japanese and Kaiden is Canadian. It's not just a bunch of Americans in space

Yuri Gagarin also beat Shepard in being the first white man in space.

Australia gets a lot of mentions too for some reason. I think the Reapers wiped Adelaide out from Orbit at one point.

Even the Reapers are afraid of everything in Australia that wants to kill them.

Most of the characters have American accents, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're American. Hackett is from Argentina, Anderson from the UK. If you look at the surnames it's clear that they're supposed to represent people of different origins: Boris Mikhailovitch, Oleg Petrovsky, Nitesh Singh, Ines Lindholm etc. In the Shadow Broker files it's mentioned that Chinese vice-premier Lin Yi dashes his chances of election to the Systems Alliance Parliament. So it's not just North Americans in there.

Also for the last name, aren't Russian surnames supposed to be different based on gender (ie Romanov/Romanova) ? That'd be a problem.

Well they could have named the PC Bondar but that doesn't have the same ring to it.  I think they are looking for names that can have dual meaning.

Well, it's not BioWare's fault that their names suck at being catchy. I mean, do I really expect NPC's to say Tereshkova multiple times? Heck nah.

No different from how most foreigners in manga speak Japanese. They're using it for better flow of the story. Plus, if you play it in other countries, they have their own dub and speak in their own language. It's more about universal flow for the game than anything.

Bioware and EA are based on North American continent, so I don't see why they need justification or why is it wrong for them to use what they're familiar with and if they want to use American continent accomplishments, maybe because they're proud of it or the kind of things they're passionate about. It could also be something they're related to. Whenever I watch black predominant shows that made by white writers, it just seem out of places, especially with the cultural reference and characters' interests like with the Cleveland Show. They could use other places, they could not, but it's not failed in any single way if they don't want to use it. They have no obligation or should they be shamed for it.

Bradley Manning leaked classified documents en masse to a person he had a crush on instead of following established whistle blower procedures.
If a Cosmonaut died the USSR erased them from the public record and made their entire family disappear just to avoid the appearance of weakness or ineptitude.

Basically the same excuse as Russia uses.

"They leaked our documents we didn't want anyone to see."

Today, the artist formerly known as the USSR shows its strength through making commute a hardcore contact sport. I'm pretty sure they show live dashcam videos on a TV channel there.
