I have tried sending a few friend requests but no one accepts them. I am just starting out on xbox manifest but I feel like I know enough about the game and I am a decent enough player to get some friends. Or is xbox players too harsh?
How do you guys make friends online?

I'm not the most social person but making friends is easy. Just play with people and if you manage to not embarrass yourself too much, send them a friend request after.
My problem is different: Most people simply aren't interesting or fun enough to be my friends. Oh... and once people are on my list, I almost never play with them again. Not exactly sure why though. ^^

I got a ton of friend requests after playing online games with other people. If they like to play with you, then they'll send you a friend request.

or to be more serious / helpfull,...
usually I accept fiend requests only, when:
- people write some nice words in the comment (why should I add someone, who doesn't feel the need to write some extra words)
- I knew them or feel comfortable while playing with them
- I highly prefer people, speaking the same language, .... because of reasons
