So I'm gonna be a Dwarf Tank (shield and sword) and my party will be--Me/Shale/Alistar (Loghain) and Leliana. I just don't feel we need a Mage considering this we're just a bunch of tanks.
Yes we're gonna be really wanting a quick heal and using a butt-ton of potions but considering Shale is giving us so much thanks to Stone Aura I feel we don't need a mage.
Mageless Playthrough (how well will it work?)

I've done this with a warrior dwarf, but for role-playing reasons as she didn't trust magic. I varied my party all the time and it was fine, I remember using Zev and Oghren a lot, along with Sten. In DAO it doesn't, as far as I can remember, have an impact on any quests (whereas not having a mage stops you from achieving things in DA2 and DAI).

I've never tried a mageless playthrough, but if you don't have a mage in your active party, I'd recommend taking Sten and making sure he has his feastday gift available.

I don't like Sten as a character lol. I'll rather have Loghain/Shale in my party, a better offense is a good defense ![]()

Lot's of health poultices, that's how it work ![]()
So you or one of the party member should able to make high tier poultices
Making and using bombs also a good idea

It shouldn't be a problem, especially if you give Templar powers to at least one other warrior and perhaps give some archery abilities to a couple of your warriors. Also, get the mod to fix Shale's powers. With a functional "Rock Barrage," you have a talent equal to any mage spell for killing large numbers of enemies.

Just focus on rooting or high DPS, and you'll be fine. The only things to watch out for are Crushing Prison and Curse of Mortality. Carry Spirit Salves to mitigate the curse, and save Alistair's dispelling technique for any Crushing Prisons.
Have all your characters focus on one target at a time. Go for quick kills. Start from least powerful enemy to most. Have the talent that lets you gain stamina whenever you kill an enemy.

neither have I but I've heard a few people prefer playing without them. But personally I find their ability to heal without using as many potions tool useful especially when going against tougher enemies cfouple that with the ability for a mage to fight at range backing you up with a few fireballs if not playing that role myself is just too much fun for me to want to reaslly consider not playing with at least 1 in my team.

Without mages would be quite difficult for sure...mages can freeze, burn, slow, petrify, knock down or electrify enemies, just to name a few...

I've done mageless playthroughs several times. It works fine, so long as the rest of your party is good, and you can stock up on healing potions. Aside from the first time I played the game, I'm not sure I've ever gone through the Deep Roads with a mage, for instance... dragon fights are the hardest without them, but get enough potent health poultices and you should be fine.

It's certainly not impossible, but it does add a layer of difficulty. The things I miss the most about not having a mage are:
- Crowd control
- Friendly healing
- Anti-magic
CC can be taken care of by warriors, particularly champions and two-handers. I've done a 4 champion 2H playthrough before, 8 aoe knockdowns keeps pretty much every enemy on their asses at all times. Probably not what you had in mind, but appropriately specced warriors can provide a decent bit of CC.
Healing can, for the most part, be taken care of by potions. The main issue is when someone's incapable of healing themselves. The culprit here is usually crushing prison or curse of mortality - kit alistair (or another templar) up in spell resistance gear (so he himself can't be taken out by spells) and get him to dispel anything nasty. Interrupt grabs/overwhelms with a knockdown or stun. Taunt away enemies if they're beating up someone otherwise disabled. You'll also most likely have at least 2 durable characters, so you can share the beating and reduce potion usage.
For mages, get them with a stealthed rogue, or stun with a templar. Also have a templar handy to dispel anything irritating.

I tried it once - my dual-wielding rogue and Zevran (both of whom were DPS-based), Alistair, and Dog, and we tore our enemies to shreds. It actually worked better than some parties that included a mage. ![]()
Then again, I played on Easy, so I don't know if that would work on higher difficulties.

I usually play on Nightmare, and it does work -- at least for me. I never rely on crowd control to begin with (dislike using it, really), and I don't much bother with the anti-magic capabilities either, so it's really only fixing the healing gap. So long as you can win a fight quickly, that isn't terribly much of a problem. That's why dragon fights are the hardest; can't really win 'em fast.
