I was thinking of not taking an any specialization (except fro the rift mark you get after the first chapter). You think it's possible to complete the game on Hard or Nightmare with just the regular builds? Specifically Winter/Spirit or Storm/Spirt?

I completed the game the first time through without ever understanding that there even were "Specializations", much less how to acquire one.
So that would be a "Yes". 
Yeah I'd say it's possible given all the specializations really do is give you a few extra options to pick from in regards to powers and abilities nothing that's especially crucial. Given that each of your qsuadmates have those abiliities anyway you don't necessarily have to have them I don't think. I've always picked one as Ilike the idea of the extra options but you don't necessarily have to as in my last playthrough I didn't pick up my rift mage spec until I was level 18/19 I think so had done the majority of the game already. All it does as I sid is give you extra options to play with. You'll always pick up the most important things even without them.
