I've heard that if you did the Dark Ritual, Alistair says that the Warden is "walking a dark path". And if you went for the US instead, he complains about how the HoF's fame overshadowed him.

There is just no way to be on good terms with him, is there?

I also would like to know what his exact words were in the " overshadowed by fame" part. I haven't found any videos on Youtube with this version.

Oh, the overshadowed part is just Nightmare teasing him about how he always left the hard job for other people to do (the throne of Ferelden, the Archdemon, etc.).

I thought the "walked a dark path" line was triggered by "The Hero and Alistair were not friends" tile in Keep. Doesn't make sense to have it hinge on the Dark Ritual, since Alistair can possibly do it himself in the main game.

Alistair can possibly never come to know about the ritual, so this whole line do not make sense in a certain scenario.
Him whining about the fame of the hero who was a friend with him and made the US to save him does not make sense and is out of character.
In the epilogue of DAO with Alistair as warden and an US ending he did honored both his friend and Duncan, so in DAI he should remember with sorrow an US warden not with envy.

True, Alistair will have no knowledge of the Dark Ritual unless the Hero tells him about it.

Ah, so he is still cool with dead!Warden.

But it still is weird that Alistair only has a problem with the DR now. DAO and DA2? Not a word about it.

And now he assumes that a single night means the Warden and Morrigan are living in a sinister castle, testing on human subjects and cackling madly.

That bit of dialogue popped up in one of my playthroughs where Alistair romanced an Amell FemWarden as well. His reaction could just as easily relate to seeing someone you love get involved with something dangerous; radical and/or unstable people, addiction, etc.

...did you do the Dark Ritual?

I wonder if the "walking a dark path" comment relates to something else, perhaps.  Decisions made at Soldier's Keep or sparing the Architect in Awakening, perhaps, rather than the DR?  Either or both of those seem to me to be equally applicable.

I don't recall seeing this in game because I usually have Alistair as king unless my Warden romanced him, wanted to stay with him, and wasn't a HN, but is it possible that he's being literal? As in, the Warden is walking a dark path at this very moment because he or she is searching for a cure for the Calling and it's kinda dangerous?

Or could it have something to do with the Warden accepting Avernus's Power of Blood?

As far as I know, the "walking a dark path" refers to the dark ritual, Alistair was firmely against it and you had to convince him with the (Persuade) line in order to do it if you choose him for this in DA:O.

He never liked Morrigan nor trusts her, yet he seems to change him mind a little when he talks to her in Skyhold if she has Kieran with her, because Alistair thought that the boy would be a demon spawn.

My female Dalish warden didn't romance anyone in games 5 and 9 and Alistair did the DR. In game 11 she romanced Zevran and she still talked Alistair in doing the DR. My wardens is strong in persuasion due to the landsmeet.

My male Elven warden knows dying for nothing means nothing so,he does the DR and later departs with his love Leliana.

My Elven female wardens can not become queen since Ferelden will never allow a Elven queen.. Since she won't be any man's mistress, she wishes the King and Queen well and departs  and travels the world with her BFF Leliana.

You're off trying to cure yourself while the Grey Warden situation goes to ****.

I'd be pressed too.

I think my Hero is on fair terms with Alistair... who became a drunk. He leaves with Teagan, so who knows how he feels now? Loghain is dead, Alistair was spared having to sacrifice himself. If anything I think drunk Alistair who was friends with the Hero only feels bad about himself for leaving and not trusting his friend's judgment, if Loghain is dead.
