Do you try to make it match with how you're posing your character? Do you just pick your favorite one reguardless if it matches or not. However lighting and such if you have black hair (or something just as dark) do you try to make sure it doesn't get drowned in the dark background color?
What kind of background do you use for your portrait?

Welp. This is not a thing I'd ever thought about, but a random sampling of my Warden portraits (random being: those I had screenshots of or could easily grab from old!BSN) shows that I'm in a big ol' portrait rut. I even repeat the portrait backgrounds for second playthroughs of Wardens (the first and last pairs of portraits).
How embarrassing... ![]()
I'm sure I favoured the green-toned background for the red-haired Wardens because complementary colours and once an art major always an art major. And the dark range of the gradients set off the 3/4 profile while the lighter range frames the hair, but I didn't do that consciously or with intent.
I do spend an agonizing amount of time getting the 'right' expression, though, angling it just so and making endless minute adjustments to the tilt and tweaking the zoom over and over - probably more time than I spend creating their ugly faces in the first place. ![]()

I... never even bothered with that, tbh. In fact I didn't even think about what the "Background" slider meant until just a few days ago when I was playing with the options for a new City Elf playthrough. I generally go through the CC options in order, starting from the top, though, and I spend so much time getting just the right look that by the time I get to the "portrait" options I just kinda say, "Screw it."

Uh, I use the light/sky blue background or plain grey. The grey is obvious.. but the light blue matches the color of the Eluvian for a Dalish. Although a light purple works for that too.

I do too, except for the expression, I always go with the default expression.
Even longer if I change the head morph & it is no longer framed properly.
How did you get that blonde elf with the portrait background, but no circle around it?

I think that's probably from the Keep. It looks like the thumbnails they have on the Hero cards.

You can get that transparent background within your save file itself. The save folder should have a portrait of your character in a small jpeg.. without the background.

Screencapped from what is left of my profile @ old!BSN. Ditto the third portrait from the left. The background 'circle' on Blondie is there, it just blends into the black page background.
