I'm working on some new conversations for my campaign, and reworking some old ones in the prologue, and searching for rules and how the rolls actually work. I want to do this the "right" way, but unsure how to do it.

For instance, when I offer the PC a bluff/intimidate/diplomacy option in conversation, on the PC line I do a conditional gc_skill_check to make sure they have at least a "1" rank in that skill before I show that line to them. So if a player only has ranks in Diplomacy, they're only going to get the standard (non-skill) responses and the Diplomacy option.

The NPC line that follows I need to do the gc_skill_check and actually set a reasonable DC for the success response to show up. But I am not sure what that DC should be.

What are the guidelines for these DC's?

You could use the influencing NPC attitudes table from the OGL.

Well, someone pursuing a conversation skill probably puts a point per level into them, plus the max four at level 1 (assuming they know they might need more than a minimum number, not say a hack and slash with all the sudden a diplomacy check out of nowhere). So you can figure x+3 base points at x level, plus any stat bonuses. So at level 10 they are likely to have maybe 10 + 3 + 2 (from stats) = 15 points. So if you want something to be a 50/50 chance for someone that's pursued a skill, then 25 seems about right. Then if they're really pursued it (skill focus or high relevant stat) it's easy, and if they didn't it's hard/impossible.

I think there is actually a game script somewhere that lets you specify relatively easy/hard and the game will calculate a DC.

Don't let them keep trying until they succeed though, if you do that there's not really a point of having a DC check.

Okay, that helps a lot. Thanks kamal_.

So it's 50/50 because they have to roll a D20, right? I get it now.

Appreciate the help.
