A few things I hate about ME2

Don't let the title fool you, I absolutely LOVE the game so far (and I'm only up to Omega), but there are some really glaring problems.

1. Unable to map the Backspace and Delete keys. I use the arrow keys for movement (I hate WASD), and I used Backspace for the tactical HUD and Delete for holstering my weapon in ME1. Why can't I do that here?

2. Unable to remap certain functions. More specifically, during hacking, the Spacebar is still used to select the codes when hacking a bank terminal or similar item, and there is no way to map that function elsewhere.

3. No manual crouch. I don't like using cover just to crouch.

4. Scanning worlds is slower than two Elcor doing the rumpy pumpy. I have to reposition my mouse several times when moving from pole to pole. At the very least, you could have made it only SLIGHTLY slower than moving the mouse when not scanning.

5. Storm uses the same key as Use and Cover. No, I don't want to accidentally go into cover when running. Keep those two keys seperate.

6. Miranda needs to lay off the Botox. There's only so much of that perpetual smirk I can take before I start shooting.

Seriously, Bioware, I love you but what the hell?

Massive agreement about Number 5.

Also would love a simple "jump over things" button, rather than taking cover, then vaulting.

ME1 had a Mount action mapped to the Use key. It was a rarely-used option (I only used it in a few two-story building to get on top of boxes to reach a storage crate), but it's definitely a better way than requiring you to take cover.

I was swimming in resources in the end after doing all Loyalty quests / randoms that popped up without even looking. So don't go nuts trying to find every bit of resources, you won't need em unless I missed something.

My biggest gripe, they dumbed down the game to much. I liked modifying my weapons/armor and having control on what my team members equipped etc.

personally i think they "smartened up" the game. loot is stupid. im glad i dont have to go through all those guns and armors, especially for all my squaddies. you can change your first armor to basically whatever you want anyways so why do i need to go around buying and finding something when i can have it at the start of the game?

I agree on 3. This is because like I said I played the game with a Machine Gun. The cone of fire when I am using it on full auto (and not purposely firing burst shots) was a bit high even with the Assault Rifle Accuracy Upgrade.

On another note I am happy to see that people are participating in writing what they think. Game designers can only do so much thinking before they run out of time (before it must be launched). It really is up to players to help them out. Don't be afraid to comment badly on something. The only way to learn from mistakes is by pointing them out. If you want to see my write up of it (review) which is longer here is a link at bottom. I will try to be active with community on the storyline part. I hope to help Bioware out on my end as much as possible.

I may not be the best writer and that is largely because I am built for technical. If you tell me to build a computer I can do that. Writing is something I never was able to do well. Others are similar and please don't be afraid to write! Give it your best like anything and that is all that counts don't worry about how it may look. I hope this helps you and have fun with ME 2.

I hate that they removed the Inventory system entirely. It was a huge headache in ME1, but it didn't need to be removed. A simple sort option and less item drops per mission would have sufficed. This upgrade system, which FORCES you to perform that horrifying planet scan feature, is not a big upgrade over the migraine-inducing inventory from the first game.

First DLC request: an additional scan upgrade that lets you scan at 3x-5x the current upgraded speed, so it takes less than 15 minutes to scan each planet. Thanks.

This.

I look at her and I can't help but think thaty she has some hyper-perverted sex joke on the tip of her tongue at all times.

Then again, maybe that's the idea.

7. I like being able to Storm outside of combat. I don't like being restricted to fatigue outside of combat.

8. Speaking of fatigue, give us the visual indicator back! I don't like having to rely solely on "burst firing" Storm to get across a station quicker just because the only way I can tell if I'm fatigued is a very subtle audio cue. It also doesn't help the deaf ME gamers (of which my roommate is one of).

i'll add to your list.

1 ammo. wtf is this? i miss my spectre gear assault rifle with it's unending wall of bullets.

2
cover system. i agree with you on this one. i just love it when i am
storming an enemy and then my guy decides to atach himself to a box.
also i love watching my character have great difficulty jumping over
things especially when a team mate is cooking to death inside an
airvent, yes shepard just keep on standing up and going into cover,
don't try to vault the crate.

3 agree again on the manual crouch. i have NEVER used
the cover systems games employ. any good gamer can simply find his own
cover and it is much easier to strafe back and forth behind a wall than
it is to lean around it.

4 why doesn't the ai feed my fish? i'm tired of those damn things dying. at least the space hamster doesn't die .

5
super weak shepard. in me1 i was f****** god. after 6 playthroughs with
all the best equipment and stats maxed out i could stand in the open in
a firefight and survive on any difficulty except insane. this is how it
should be once you are maxed out.

6 only 30 levels? after one playthrough you are at the level cap? why bother playing it through again?

7 once again i agree with you, scanning the worlds by hand is hella boring. why would you even put something like that in a game? it's like the hidden packages from gta except its an incredibly tedious and boring task that isn't optional (at least if you want your upgrades and don't wanna die)

8 im essentially the six million dollar man, being rebuilt and made better and all, but i can't even sprint as far as a middle aged man with asthma. that makes complete sense, all that training, reduced gravity settings, biotic and tech implants and i can only sprint 50 feet before i am pooped.

Skip dialogue being mapped to the same key as select dialogue is extremely annoying. It was a problem in the first game, it's a problem in this game.

Huuuuuuge agreement on 5. I guess it's a nod to console players so the control scheme can be less totally mutilated compared to PC, but I have the luxury of a system with no shortage of distinct inputs and I'd like to use them, dammit! Each of those distinction functions should be able to be bound separately, at least, if they insist on defaulting to the single button that does everything.

Crouching independently of cover would be nice, but it's not a huge deal since the cover system works on just about every flat surface I might want to crouch behind. That said, I *love* the cover system in this game - it feels quite natural, Shepard stays in cover when I expect him to and is easy to move about to take advantage of any opening to pop out and fire. It's a much more intuitive process than fumbling with strafe, lean, move and look controls to approximate leaning back against a wall and peaking around the corner.

The scanning system is really annoying. Probes are dirt cheap from the very beginning; it's just a time suck. The ridiculous slow move speed of the scanning cursor when actively scanning is just icing on the cake of fail. At least it's less awful than planet exploration in ME1.

Overall, though, I'm blown away by ME2. It's quite open-ended, yet I never find myself without a clue what to do next. The combat plays like a reasonably polished tactical shooter, but despite the RPG aspects being heavily streamlined down, everything fits together quite nicely. Most RPG-shooters are either terrible shooters with stupid grindy combat - all the reflexes, positioning, and fun of the shooter aspect is reduced down to a twitchier way to determine hit percentage, and the actual combat resembles a bland MMO. With Mass Effect, it feels more like Bioshock when I'm playing - a thoroughly satisfying shooter with nice RPG touches - but those nice touches are actually quite deep customisation options. Add all that to a beautiful game world and compelling story and... let's just say the past 36 hours have involved very little sleep... Or leaving the house.

I felt like the romance subplots were well written but then had very boring conclusions compared to ME1 and Dragon age. Will i ever get to see what Tali really looks like i wont, guess I will have to wait till ME3. :(

i have to disagree that the cover system is any good at all. while i try to move along the side of the cover to hit that sweet spot where you can look around the corner ( happens to be a few nanometers wide) or even when i am just moving around behind cover, shepard seems to almost invariably decide to either stand up and get shot in the face often times dying as a result or just simply break cover.

it's absolutely awful. why is it that both right and left stick button makes the map of objective show? why not one of them be crouch? i can understand no jump in a game like this but no crouch is unforgivable.

i just try to remember how awesome me1 was and pretend me2 is just a bad dream.

Not being able to take off your helm wearing chitin armor and blood dragon armor. I like those stats, but I don't want to walk around looking like a cross between a crab and a bug.

I agree about changing keys. I want that E key for interaction.

Personally, I'd rather take the M35 "Drunken Monkey" Mako out for a spin than risk carpal tunnel in my wrists just to move the scanner.

You know, after playing the game for a good long while, I've come to the conclusion that I really don't like Gears of Wa... err, I mean Mass Effect 2.

The cover system is too overused. The "new" health system is stupid. The lack of an inventory system and weapon/armor mods no longer makes collecting a tactical decision. The control scheme makes me wish I bought the 360 version instead. The Day One DLC cant hold a candle to the Day One DLC of Dragon Age (the Normandy Crash pack would have made more of an emotional impact if it unlocked half-way through the game, not at the very beginning when the original Normandy was still fresh in our minds).

In short, it just feels like they looked at the Gears of War player demographic and built the game for them.

At least the story is the one thing that keeps me playing, but I certainly won't go for a second playthrough. For all its flaws, the original Mass Effect is still the magnum opus of the series. Mass Effect 2 is just a glorified expansion pack.
