It's a bit complicated.

I have a retail copy of Origins and Awakenings; and I have the ultimate edition on Steam & Origin.

I installed the retail of Origins (to save bandwith) and activated it etc.

I was able to launch the game without the DVD.

Then I installed Awakenings

Then I downloaded some of the DLC associated with my account.

But now I am unable to play with out the disk??

How can I set it so I do not need the disk to play

After all I am connected on line and fully activated

why should I need a disk

Any advice?

ps I think the problem may be caused by the Awakenings install.

I wonder if I completely uninstall and then re-install only Origins will I be able to download my DLC and play without a disk?

     What a mess!

First thing: DA does not play well if both DAO and DAU are installed together... you have to go with only one.

You'll need to uninstall the game. Make sure you save your character/saved game directory to a third location!
Then you'll have to re-install it and all DLC using the Origin download process, plus your BSN account for some of the DLC.
DAU is approximately 24GB for the complete download.
After the download/install, you wont need the disks anymore.

There doesn't appear to be any simple way to tell EA/Origin that you have the retail disk version, letting it validate the game in your Origin Games library, but use the disk files to install. Maybe the problem is the disk version of the installer establishes a slightly different folder structure than the EA/Origin download.

Hi  Jeffonl1

Thank you for reply

I will follow your advice and reinstall

I have not actually started the game yet so no issues with saves & profiles etc

I have the Ultimate edition on Steam and origin

Any pointers on which I should use?

With the growing size of games and the over-pricing (imo) of bandwidth, especially if one exceeds ones monthly allowance as part of a package deal, the extra cost of downloading a game is considerable. One now has to take that into account when buying games.

I have DAO on disk, and also Awakening on disk (installed). It always asks for the Awakening disk to be in the drive to play DAO. No Ultimate edition here...

Can't say I know which is better (Steam vs Origin), they are not identical, but much the same. I know some people have had issues with the Steam version, so I would stay with the Origin version.
Secondly you can 'redeem' your steam key with Origin... but I don't think you need 2 copies of the game in Origin.

You're right-on about download limits; it can be a nasty shock $$$ if you break your cap.

Hi Luna
I have the game installed on 2 PCs - one with the original retail install, and one with Origins download.
My retail version asks for the Awakenings Disk, but not the Origins download.
The big pain with Origins download is that it does not acknowledge that you have DLC (beyond the ones that came with original game; game key related I guess)... you still have to download them from the old BSN. And the Origins library never updates...
But everything plays just fine on the download version, mods and all!

I got the Origin version by using my Steam key, where I got the Ultimate version on sale.

I will be using the Origin version based on what you and some others have said.

I am not clear about what you said re the DLC.

What do you mean by Origin "does not acknowledge that you have DLC (beyond the ones that came with original game; game key related I guess)... you still have to download them from the old BSN. And the Origins library never updates..."

Thanks

When I got my new hard drive and reinstalled DAO.. I had a terrible time with the DLC and entitlements showing up under installed content. They showed in my game..but DAO kept trying to download all of them again..and installation failed every time. I finally figured it out, but can't remember what I did.

I referred to the Origins Game library... it will show DLC as "BUY" even if you have them and you have purchased them (but not through Origin). To obtain DLC that you purchased pre-Origin you have to go to the old BSN profile for you:
https://social.biowa...ntitlements.php (you'll need to logon)
Theres also some free stuff, on the old BSN:

Maybe you used the game configurator DAOriginsConfig ('Repair' 'Clear Download Cache')?
It was a pain for me too!

I went to the BSN profile page and it tells me I have Dragon Age 2 DLCs.....but I dont have DA2 on my account

Puzzled about that?

And on my Origin library the DA1 Ultimate Edition DLC is listed as 'Download'

So that looks right to me

If you mean the free stuff, despite its name (DA2) it includes DAO and DA2 items.
If your BSN entitlements, you are entitled to some 'free' DLC for DA2 (of course you would have to buy the game to use them)

Just remember, about the library, it will not show anything you download from BSN.
Mods are unaffected (if you use them - and I do recommend that you use at least some game-fixing mods-), if the mod is made and deployed correctly, by the 'Repair' option for the Game in the library.

In my registered content/entitlements, they also gave me xbox 360 stuff. I have no xbox :D They just gave it to everyone regardless of the games you own. And PS3 stuff I can download if I wanted.

Thanks for explaining that.

Could you recommend some mods you feel improve the vanilla game without actually altering it.

Thanks

For a guide on using mods, I recommend this blog:
http://social.biowar...736/blog/12959/

On the old BSN: http://social.biowar...bw_projects.php

I use the nexus website:
http://www.nexusmods.com/dragonage/
Lots of mods!!!!
I suggest the following:
ZDF (fixes Zevran stuff, but lots of others). Very well documented
MRP [Morrigan Restoration Patch] (lots of Morrigan and more fixes. well documented.
dialogue_tweaks. Very good.

Just search for these on nexus.

All 3 are totally compatible.
I also use Improved Atmosphere... but you have to make IA compatible with the other 3 by changing some files: that's why good mod documentation is so important!
But modding choices is a huge topic...

It is easier, for the PC version, to download the Promo items directly from Origins (see DAO Game Details in your game library ...)
