I've been looking at ways to level my Shotgun Adept. I was thinking whether I should invest any points into Basic Armor. Would you recommend going with 6 points in Basic Armor, or getting levels 7-12 Spectre Training? Another option is to forget the specialisation class, and put points into Armor instead. Which do you recommend?

Always put points into your class specialization. it makes your powers better.
I have never had an Adept where I did not put points into Basic Armor... but I have only ever had two Adepts. I have seen some recommendations where players say to ignore points into Basic Armor and rely on Barrier for shield restore instead. i have never tried that; I have been intending to do so at some point, but probably never will unfortunately.
i usually like putting points into Basic Armor so I can use Shield Boost to restore shields when Barrier is on cooldown. But most of the time you can probably get away with just using Barrier repeatedly to add shields. The Bastion specialization improves Barrier so that it adds shields over time.
When you are comfortable with the game, you can usually get away with just 4 points into Spectre Training for Basic Unity. My issue with Unity is that early game, you kind of need Unity, but Basic Unity kind of garbage since it does not restore much health or shields and it has a base 120 second cooldown (2 minutes!). And early game you are spending your points in your main powers. By the end of the game, when you have enough points to get Master Unity, you rarely need it or use it so you end up wasting the points. You can probably leave it at 4 points or not put any points into it at all.

The only reason I put points into Basic Armor is to unlock Pistols. Some old Assault Rifle Adept builds skipped Pistols altogether, although that isn't something I would do or necessarily recommend.
I agree that Basic Unity is fairly poor, but it is hard to invest much more in Spectre Training when you are unlocking powers. You basically need to hit First Aid right after Unity usually, and even then squadmates might get oneshot anyway. Usually it works best if you make some sort of simple mistake when there aren't many enemies nearby since it isn't spammable for many revives in harder fights.
