I prefer there to be some variety in how the romance plays out. It may make sense since romanceable characters might need some time before deciding whether or not to engage in a relationship perhaps due to circumstances or even plot-related reasons.

I also hope that sex is optional with some romances since I liked how some romances in Inquisition were written to be interpreted as sexual or non-sexual and I believe that in Dorian romance, you could choose to ask him to wait because you thought the two of you should learn more about each other.

Hope not.

I believe that anything that gives the player a choice in how the relationship plays out is a good thing

Whew, this thread's going freaking fast. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I agree. I think we all kind of have our reasons to enjoy (or maybe dislike) romances. Characters being relatable is something I can definitely understand. That's a good point. For me, it is also about getting to know a character I like on a deeper level. I've gained a completely new insight into some characters after romancing them (or watching their romance) because some things they only dare to share with a lover, some sides (positive or negative) of them you only see then, and that makes sense. It is also about shaping my own character. My first Shepard's story and personality wouldn't be what it was without going through all the mess with the Virmire Survivor. It's another hypothetical situation to put my character through and see what it does to their development. Makes me more emotionally invested, too. I'm pretty okay with sacrificing my own character otherwise. While having another character caring about them, not so much.

I've never played for romances and I will never play for romances. (I played through the NWN's original campaign the first time completely missing there was one. I started DAO knowing very little about how great the character interaction is. In ME1 I was planning not to romance anyone the first time around... only to change my mind later.) But once they're in the game, they add more options, more roleplay, character development, replay value, etc. And given it's a BioWare's thing and they've been adding it into pretty much all their games forever, I'd say it's worth discussing as anything.

Hey it's nothing wrong about turning up the heat a little more. :)

How about the opposite option, sex without romance?... Friends with benefits?...

Reminds me of Isabella in DA2. A large portion of the romance was beign friends with benefits

Yeah, you had the option to do so, but the "real" romance arc was if you chose the "love" path.

I'm just wondering why we don't seem to meet people who are only interested in sex for fun and that's it.

As far as I am concerned romances in general are a huge waste of resources considering the end result,

but if the new trend is demands for non-sexual romance, I might as well ask why not a sex-for-fun-only relationship.

Hey they known for meaningful romances and valued don't give me wrong, (Although it REALLY sucks not to have "relations" with Josephine cause she's cute and thick, Lace (as a dwarf character), & Vivienne ( Damn I really wanna make love to that beautiful Black Goddess! Bastards!) but it is nothing wrong about spice it up a bit like on Witcher 3.

If it was for me I'd pick the morally sober girl who wants to have a proper engagement before marrying and having the full benefits (intended in the wider meaning). I don't care to see these benefits, it suffices the game lets me know when they happen and why.

The only thing of this kind I had the chance to role was with Aerie in Baldur's Gate 2. From there on, I think I havent' seen anything like it.

Implying that sex before marriage is morally drunk?

Romances are optional for people who may want to have that experience, but I think they should set up brothels or something if you want "sex for fun" and someone like Isabella except they should show cutscenes getting it on being naked, and not wearing clothes in the process.

You misunderstood, I was talking about a friendship with benefits, not sex workers for hire...
A lighter version of romance if you will, a slightly more cynical mature and free outlook about friendship and sex,
without teenage exclamations of undying love and babies etc.

(if they go in the direction of non-sexual romances, it's only fair I think that they go in the other direction as well.
That's how the whole equality in romances thing works, right?)

I'm not laughing.

Well, I am. We are already past Victorian times if you hadn't noticed.

I've heard that's a legitimate interpretation of the Josie romance, though I have not seen this for myself.

I'm saying that if they do sex scenes, make it more realistic and believable. Like NC-17 rating realistic, it doesn't have to be all XXX.

If by "relations" you mean "sex", lol, I've never said I was against it in the game or otherwise, have I? I mean, I think for me that comes hand in hand with the term "romance". Well, many of them anyway. (Variety is a good thing. Love without sex. Sex without love. And what have you.) I think how much is enough is a matter of taste, however... and the kind of game they're going for... and the rating they're willing to go for... and the audience they want to target, which is, I believe, a little different than Witcher's. Also, technology. For example, I greatly respect DAO's bed scenes because I know they were trying to do something new (A LOT of new, in fact.), but watching them is still very awkward given the graphics and everything (and the music doesn't help). I admit I've liked DAI's fade to black and pillow talk best so far as regards overall execution. (Kaidan's ME3's final romance scene before assaulting the Cerby HQ comes close.) I'm neutral towards getting more or not as long as it's not stupid or cringeworthy (Please, no more people showering in underwear.) or wasteful. From what I've seen though, BW can simply do fade to black much better. Not saying I don't have a soft spot for eye candy, but I'm not sure how much I expect or want from a BioWare game.

It might be too much for the poor nun...or not enough!
