I think a good way to put an end on these discussions about having romances or not is giving players the following choice during character creation:
The player can select both options, just one, or none of them.
I think this is the most respectful solution to every kind of player.
Yeah, they're gonna implement this when pig flies. Maybe romance on/off, but a gay toggle is a definite no no.
We almost made it a full three pages before someone suggested a gay toggle.
I'd be happier with a "You can't proceed with a shitty character" toggle. If only AI was that advanced.
No one wants to see your joke characters on Youtube.
I wouldn't mind if romance was removed.
It would be a nice twist if your relationship started with sex and from then on you got to know more about the character afterwards.

I wouldn't either. Remove romance.. and make the games hard as well.
Although that probably wouldn't be good for making money. That's half of the fanbase right there.

I think they did that with Morrigan in DAO, she initiates the sex very quickly, but once the relationship starts, you learn more about her and she actually acts more distance the closer you get to her afterward.

I think remove romance would make the games soft, not hard.
I think needing romance to unlock quest or character developement is the point when it might start affecting genre, turning it more or less partially into an actual romance game. I'll be happy just to have enough information and impression about the character to determine whether I want my protagonist to romance it. It can get grating when you don't understand popularity of a character but all you hear is advices to date him/her to understand, or alternatively people dislike your fave because they misinterpret him/her due lack of information.
I don't mean I'd be jealous to players who get to know Solas better than I did in Inquisition, I had more fun disliking the guy
and generally I think it's fun to have risk of possibly falling for the wrong person (as long as there has been a tiny subtle hint about it and it's your own fault for not getting it - or you get but intentionally want more dramatic story).
Well, actually I think Bioware has done mostly a pretty good job with this. I like their romances, I think they maybe still sometimes get too much content at expense of other relationships with the same characters, but then again romances are one selling point among others. It's always gonna be fine as long as characters have appealing enough personalities.
Solas is a total crap way of doing romance. Basically, he's race-gated and gender-gated. He reveals crucial information about the game you can't get anywhere except in a romance and meta-gaming. Elf is forced to wear a slave mark, you can't reject that or refuse to wear that, and the only game mechanic to remove it is to romance Solas. Romance should be optional content, not something they should tie game mechanic or important lore aspect to. I love romance in games, but it should never come at the expense of other players who choose not to do a particular romance or even a romance at all.
I never liked Solas to begin with... or at least, once he started talking about spirits. I saw the writing on the wall already, and I haven't played Trespasser either. I don't feel like I missed anything, personally.

What's missing is the lore behind the elves, I don't care about Solas. The reveal about elf brand being a slave brand is only revealed in his romance and the ability to remove the brand itself is only possible in his romance. Basically, gameplay and story element that restricted on his romance alone.

Ah, I see. I guess that could be important. Especially for a Dalish not romancing him.
My Warden was Dalish, but ended up caring more about human things anyways.. so I doubt he'd care. He's also dead ![]()
I understand. They'll whine something about "discrimination," even though this kind of trigger would respect the wishes of gay players who don't want to be hit by characters of the opposite sex.Yeah, they're gonna implement this when pig flies. Nah, you don't have to worry about gay players, they are used to it with hundreds of games out there. It seems more about you, don't pretend like this is out of concern for other groups.

Game already has this though. Chose flirt line/heart sign or not, if you do you eventually end up hetero or samesex relationship and if you don't you don't have romance in the game. Since romances are fully optional and player has to initiate them I don't really see point on having separate romance toggle.
You had me at Apartheid... then lost me with My Little Pony.
I think one can be open minded.. and not an infantile man-child at the same time.
But I wanted to eat that.
this bacon comes with an approval rating!

Let it be known that you are a friend

I think the problem is lack of friendship arcs for some characters. I don't think romance should be only way to get know character better and unlock their quests and character developments. For some characters you can already have quite nice friendships and get to know them that way, for example Garrus, but there is characters that leave you bit cold- or left me at least if you don't romance them like Jack. And I don't think player should be forced to romance character in order to find out what kind of people they really are.
This is bit of off-topic, but I have to disagree with Vallaslin being slave mark. It's blood marking that is important part of Dalish culture and Dalish identity, whatever it was ages ago has been reclaimed and repurposed to something positive and important to Dalish.
