I tried looking but can't really find the answer, and the bull thread is over 500 pages... so my question is how do i keep iron bulls approval up while siding with mages.

Take him out on dates to kill dragons and group of Venatori in the Hissing Wastes and Western Approach. Unless you are playing with Fair Weather friends he should be easy to please and siding with the mages will just be a minor bump in another wise smooth road.

He's pretty easy, just take him Vint and Dragon Hunting and, when you talk to him investigate often so you can get that neclace he wants. You got it.
I've allied mages, exiled wardens and, made Celene Empress and, still kept high approval with Bull so, don't worry too much about it.
