I remember one.  The Grand Oak.  I think he's delightful.

Oh wow, I forgot about that one. Yes, he's great!

He's definitely one of my favorite non-companion NPCs.  It's like Treebeard meets The Lorax.

I have just returned to the game after a several year hiatus. I had only played about 1/3 of the original release, so, with all the new DLC included in the Ultimate Edition, this is like a whole new game. I said all that to say this:

The dialogue in this game is without peer (in my humble opinion). Even the other DA games don't come close. I found myself literally laughing out loud at Alistair & Morrigan's back and forth bickering/playing in the early part of the game. I had forgotten how great the writing was in this game.

Hell, in the camp when I tried to talk to my dog, Alistair even got into that and almost got eaten...

So hands down, Alistair is my favorite for purely entertainment purposes. I am only about 10% done with the Origins map so...I imagine my opinion may change in time.

I do have to ask, and I mean this with all due respect to developers involved. Did the story writers / screenplay writers change completely from DA:O to DA: 2? Then again from DA:2 to DA:I? I have played DA:2 all the way through and am about half way thru Inquisition and.... I am sorry but there is a HUGE difference in dialogue tone and content quality between the three releases. Now, in all fairness,  Inquisition has captured a little bit of the magic again...but the last 2 releases just weren't able to capture the ZING of Origins. If anyone has any inside info on this I'm all ears.

Always possible they had more to work with in the first one and started to have to scrape the bottom of the proverbial barrel for content for the last two releases...it happens.

I love the games and I think overall they did a very very good job with character development, Origins being the shining start  :D

To me, I think it looks like they saw how great Origins is, and how much everyone loved it, and then they said "Let's make the sequel as different as we can, in every possible way." I think they went off the deep end.

As far as NPC I like Lanaya and Mithra. Too bad they couldn't join the group as possible romance partners . I would gladly dump Sten and ale breath  Oghren.

I like Oghren better in DA:A  and the banter between him and Sigrun and later Valanna  is comical.

Oghren: What are you doing later tonight?

Sigrun: Sleeping alone with a knife under my pillow.

Alistair and Morrigan are forever my left and right hands, my lover and best friend. Going through this journey with them always feels right, and their stark contrast in viewpoints makes every decision more difficult and poignant. Neither of them is perfect, and I don't always agree with either of them. But at the end of the day, I feel more impacted by their stories and relationships more than anyone else.

I also really like the progression of Sten's respect for the female Warden and how the rigidly unchangeable qunari allows himself to change his opinions on this character because they've proved themselves in a way that nobody else has been able to (doubly so because of his initial comment that women can't fight). It feels empowering and particularly heartwarming when he calls her "kadan".

And honestly, the more I learn about and understand Loghain, the more I like him as a character. I disagree with the majority of his actions, but he's obviously a complex character packed with internal conflicts. Whereas on the surface it's easy to see him as simply "the villain," the more you understand about him, the more that strict binary of good vs. evil that dominates the main plot begins to fade when it comes to his decisions. He's fundamentally a good man who did some very bad things, some of them for understandable reasons. While he is still very much culpable for his actions, it poses a lot of moral questions that parallel the protagonist's own journey really nicely.

I like them all, though my favourites are definitely Alistair and Zevran. :) And it sounds like I really have to play Awakening sometime soon, I'm missing out on stuff.

I enjoyed Architect and his talking darkspawn in Awakening, because they are so bizarre; it was really weird to see one of them talk after, like, 30 hours of them being just mindless targets. Architect is also interesting, because we know pretty much nothing about him - much like Illusive Man i ME2.
Also - Anora is interesting character and fun to interact with; she can be either valuable ally or foe.

Morrigan is pragmatic

But that is hardly true at least the way in which DAO was written most of the time there is a binary choice of good vs evil
There are no pragmatic characters in DAO aside from Flemeth .
Sten,Loghain and Morrigan are not pragmatic or at least they try to be but they fail to be at least based on their approval and disapproval

Every character I came across became my favorite except for Arl howe wanted to skin that bastard the first time i laid my eyes on him and other generic enemies.... Since Dragon age origins was my very first game from bioware it really left an impact on me as well as the characters... So kudos to bioware...

Flaine1996,From the time I first saw Loghain I wanted to run a sword through him and after Howe purged the Alienage he went on my hit list. I couldn't wait to kill them both for their crimes against humanity.
