Anyone play mute (no voice)? My connection does not allow me to use voice chat of any kind. Latency is over 800ms at all times so, at best voice chat skips and stutters, at worst, it's so garbled neither side can understand a word that is said. I'd play MP but, everyone wants voice and I can't do that.

The vast majority of the playerbase on PC don't use voice chat, so don't worry about that. If you need to grab someone's attention, you can use F4 to yell "Over here", but be aware that spamming F4 is considered bad form.
Origin chat works just fine most of the time, if you're playing with friends.

800ms..?
Oh my..
That's good for me, you know at 2 AM on a school night mid week when no one is on my beam. (satellite ISP) Peak time evenings and weekends, it's closer to 1500 - 2000ms range.

I really wish there would be more chat on DAI Multiplayer. It isn't really necessary, strategically, but chat on ME3 Multiplayer adds alot to the game even if you aren't discussing strategy and tactics. It has gotten I don't even plug the headset in anymore on DAI multiplayer. too bad.

I almost always mic-up. If I am in a pug, I have a better chance of teammates taking advantage of something (like if I have froze, sundered or put some enemies to sleep). I admit I don't bother too much with that any more since, so few people bother to take said advantage. But it can still be helpful if I spy something the others may have missed (respawned enemies, a stalker that got away from me, and of course, treasure rooms that might have gone unnoticed).
It can be especially helpful when with a mixed group of players (experienced and newbies). Quite nice, if the group gets into some trouble.
Granted, more than half the pugs I play, I am met with silence.
But I digress...as others have said, it is easy enough to mute your teammates (you will see the mute option when you highlight a teammates name), and there is an in-game setting under Audio, that allows you to set chat sound to 0. Just tested this two days ago, and it appears to work.

Also keep in mind that there are bugs related to PC voice chat. Sometimes if you mute a single person YOU end up broadcasting mic always on instead of push-to-talk. Even if you're not muting, your mic can turn on when people join the lobby/game. I keep voice turned off a lot because of that and because there are people whose mics are too sensitive and are on mic always on. Hearing the game through somebody else's speakers or worse feedback noise is brutal.

Don't worry about an microphone. I learned the "golden rules" from playing in a lot of public games:
'F1' - Whenever you attack an enemy -> use it!
'F'2' - Make sure to use it periodically throughout a match.
'F3' - Never use it. "It should have been you..."
'F4' - Use it all the time! Press it with 2 secs interval until XXX imbecile team members do what you want him/her to do!

Exede (AKA WildBlue, AKA ViaSat) Yes they are improving speeds on some beams, but, nothing major until late next year and, even then you cannot cure the latency problem, satellite is limited by the speed of light and, the distances the signal has to travel. About 500ms is as low as is ever going to be possible for that. (Yes I'm certain the government gets technology that does much better but, we're talking residential here so, I don't expect to see better in my lifetime.)
Don't get me wrong, it's way better than the 24kbps dial up that is my only other option and, download speeds are fabulous just latency is off the charts by DSL standards so, unless it's a VOIP system designed to work with that, (like Exede Voice phone service) it skips and is most often garbled on both ends. Unfortunately no game voice chat is geared to compensate for the latency so, all of the have problems. (I've tried for other games and, no go if I need voice or to hear others accurately and timely - might hear it, 2-3 seconds too late.)
