Where's the N7 symbol? (I'm being serious, I might be blind but I can't see it at all).

Right arm, just above the elbow. It's easier to see on the male PC.

The earliest leak mentioned two new species and gave a brief description of each. That leak didn't mention names for those two species, but the descriptions that were given seem to line up with how the Remnant and Khet were described in a subsequent leak. Assuming for a moment that both leaks are legit, which to be honest seems to be the case, the Remnant aren't gone like the Protheans.

Their species' name also suggests that they are still around.

Uhm, no.

I kinda like the idea of a new First Contact War with all that tech on the line!

Uhm, no.

Umm, yes.

The definition of Remnant:

The part of something that is left when the other parts are gone. Merriam-Webster

A small remaining quantity of something. A surviving trace. Oxford

Bioware wouldn't be calling any species the Remnant, if that species was not still around in some fashion. Words have meaning. Note that the information you're quoting states that it is also the species' name, and not just the name of their technology. I might be wrong about all of my other guesses, but assuming the Remnant are a legit leaked detail, they will absolutely be in the game as characters. Otherwise, they wouldn't be named the Remnant.

An earlier rumored leak also mentioned two new species, and while the names for those species weren't given, their descriptions seem to line up with how the Khet and Remnant were described in the subsequent rumored leak. From the first rumored leak:

Bolded the bit that could be describing the Remnant.

And to think you've got over a year to speculate on this.

Depressing.

Watch the plot turn out be completely different than what the theories make it out to be. It sounds like an interesting theory, but honestly I'm hoping for something else.

I'm going to put my pre-release bet on the N7 guy from the trailer being the original Pathfinder, but he ends up going missing in action during the mission we see in the trailer.

I'm basing that wild guess on his two companions, a Krogan and a human female squadmate...who might might match two of the squadmates mentioned in one of the rumored leaks. One of the leaks mentioned a Krogan squadmate named Drack, and a biotic (species not mentioned) named Cora. Cora is a human name.

The N7 guy goes missing in action after being attacked by hostile aliens near those ruins, but the Krogan and the human escape and become early companions for the player character, perhaps even the first two.

The player character is the replacement Pathfinder, who in addition to getting saddled with the last guy's original mission, now also has the mystery of the N7 guy's disappearance to solve.

Later in the game the N7 guy will reemerge from that vanishing act, but as an antagonist. Maybe after going full Dances with Wolves and coming to sympathize with the aliens who captured him, who might not be the villains they initially seem.

Maybe the Remnant (one of the aliens mentioned in the leak) will initially be allies, and the Khet (the other species mentioned in the leak) the attackers who captured the N7 guy in the trailer, but later it will turn out the Remnant can't be trusted, were manipulating the Milky Way colonists for their own nefarious goals, and that the lost tech they were guiding the Milky Way colonists into recovering is dangerous in some way. The Khet will have noble reasons for violently opposing the recovery of Remnant tech, and the Khet and Remnant will swap places in the end game, with the Remnant turning out to be the Big Bad. Maybe a Remnant squaddie will turn out to be the archvillain.

Or maybe I'm completely wrong. But speculation is fun.  :D

Glad I'm not the only one thinking about this. You have a more detailed version than mine, nice work :)

Hats off, you are correct at definitions. But you know what also could be "left when other parts are gone"? Their buildings and artifacts. Besides it would be difficult to build plot around uncovering who Remnants were if one of them is your squadmate. Don't you think so?

Owner of house and guardian dog are a bit different things after all.

I always assumed a much more superficial link to the song. Basically, space western frontier vibe is the link to the song. I don't expect anything deeper than that.

I kind of like Hans theory. But I hope they don't go too deep into the evil colonist vibe.

I do agree with him that I think they will make some sort of appearance as a new enemy (most likely) and that they aren't totally extinct, but I also agree with you that for the majority of the story we will probably just explore the places they left behind.

I also think they are going to try to somehow tie the Remnant or a major plot point of the story in Andromeda back to the history of the Milky Way in some fashion so that Andromeda builds upon the wealth of lore that already exists - instead of completely discarding it altogether. I would do this by making subtle nods to curiosities of the prior trilogy, such as the "deep anomalies" in multiple gas giants in the Milky Way, or the "beings of light", for example.

Although, I really wish the Remnant were the Leviathans - I loved their species and was hoping they would make an appearance again as an antagonist, say - by escaping to Andromeda and going all alpha species on a new galaxy. But that's probably wishful thinking.

Although I don't expect it, I'm holding out hope that the series will eventually return to the Milky Way at some point. If Bioware were to make a Mass Effect game set in the Milky Way, it is probably going to be about 10 years+ from the release of ME3 and the whole ending controversy. It will be far enough removed from the ending controversy that the devs would be able to get away with it without rehashing 2012's drama. By then most of the people who would be buying the game would likely have been kids when ME3 released, and if they played a prior ME game at all it would more likely be Andromeda than ME3. Most of the old Shepard trilogy fans would probably just welcome a return to the Milky Way. The ones still bitter over the ending controversy or unwilling to accept any necessary game design compromises (a Milky Way sequel is probably going to require it being based on only one ending choice) a decade or more later are likely to be a very small group.

Tl;dr: *If* Bioware ever returns to the Milky Way, I'd love to see the Leviathans return as that game's big bad.

I wouldn't mind starting out working for the "bad guys" it certainly makes for a head turner of a plot twist a la Deus Ex. That game tells you that you are the good guys and not like I needed an excuse to start slaughtering NSF troops (I really suck at stealth) but branding them as terrorist certainly made it easier on the old conscience. From picking up little pieces of information along the way I started to get a bad feeling, turns out those "terrorists" where more or less the good guys. Whoops! I guess that's what role playing is for. Haha.
