for mage stuff the best places are Val Royeux or the merchant in the hissing wastes. But those aer the best places to go anyway

Not hard to get the gold you need. Craft gear for everyone, sell anything you find. (Except those Battlemage arms with the fur because I have yet to get the schematics for those) Buy the more expensive schematics first, use the Golden Nug and, in two, perhaps 3 play throughs you won't need to buy anything anymore.

If you can't afford Val Royeaux, then you really can't afford the Black Emporium, which is the best place to buy schems.

You can farm schematics if you have patience (takes at least an hour). You can also farm gold for that matter, at one remove. There is a Tier 2 chest in the Hinterlands, close to a fast travel camp and far from any enemies, where you can earn about 1000 gold an hour save scumming. More if you are lucky and get a lot of blue items. I prefer that one to the Tier 2 chest in Haven itself (even safer). The Hinterlands one seems more productive, but that might just be my imagination.

If you aren't sure you want to spend/can spare the coin, here's what I did with the schematic perks: I bought them, then uploaded the schematics to the nug. Afterwards, I reloaded my game to before I bought the perks, then dl'd them via the nug. Buying schematics from merchants works the same, it's just a bit more travel time back to the nug to upload them to yourself.

Note: the nug only works for Tier 2 and above. You still have to buy any Tier 1 schematics you might want. If you can't afford VR stuff, you might have to settle for whatever is available in Redcliffe until you get more gold.

I haven't played DAI in awhile, but I also play as Knight Enchanter.  Last time I played, I was playing one of the story DLCs - The Jaws of Hakkon.  I don't recommend using any of the Armor that is Mage specific *.  I think I actually used a Schematic for a Warrior, but crafted the Armor using Silverite.  IIRC, Silverite removes the Class Restriction for armor.

*Since I play DAI on XBox 360, I don't have access to the last 2 DLCs.  Perhaps there is an Armor Schematic, in one of those, that would be better for a Knight Enchanter than the Armor Schematic I used.

Completely off topic... but how have you not managed to find those battle mage arms? Those furry guys are my favorite pauldrons to use for any class.

I also agree with this sentiment.  Sell, sell sell...  Even the rare stuff is not as good as anything you can craft.  Sell it all save for rings, amulets and belts - those are quite worth the effort of finding them.  If you have to supplement those rare armors arms and legs with crafted arms and legs until you can find a schematic to craft a tier 3 armor to your liking.

If you have the descent there seems to be a lot of stuff in it that sells for a lot of money.  Open it up and farm in there if you've a mind to do so.  I actually think that even if you remove class restriction, mage armor is still best for a mage.  You might though, if you are of a mind and are working on a critical hit build, craft a rogue armor with Snofleur so you can get the cunning/dexterity and high crit chance that comes along with.  Although, I will say, you do not need rogue armor at all.  In my last game I got my KE up to a 99% crit chance with mage armor, the Wrath of Lovias staff crafted with all the great bear and the crit chance rings.

Wow thank you for all the replies. Yup i went to the back shops of Val royeux, found the vendor.

Ah, Old Gen console, then you won't have the Golden Nug.  :( PC and New Generation consoles get it but, not old gen consoles.

It is a statue of a Nug that allows you to synchronize collections like seeds, drapes, windows, thrones, banners and, tier 2 or better schematics across your account so, when you start a new game, you can use the Nug to get all of the stuff it syncs on the new character at no cost.

If you are a completionist and/or a crafting happy collector and, have to finish all collection, it alone is worth a new console.

When I start buying armor schematics, I get rogue armor first. Dex isn't too useful cross-class, but I can get some use out of cunning, especially for mages with Flashpoint. Gold does build up pretty fast, but there are lots of things that are higher priority than class-matched armor.

And snoufleur leather is dead easy to get, definitely the easiest of the "removes class restrictions" materials. Just go to Emprise du Lion and turn right.

As the name "scumming" implies, it's a cheat, an exploit. I always play my first run through clean and blind, no peeking at forums or Reddit, but after the first run I look for time savers. :) This exploit is relatively modest, but its still a cheat. You'll have to decide if you are willing to cross that line.

So, with those warnings, here's how you do it.

I call this technique "loot-1", which means, you loot everything in a container except for one item, which you leave in the container (thus, minus 1). Quick Save/Quick Load. The container's content will reset and you'll get new random loot! Repeat, taking out the highest value items, leaving one low value item. If you empty the container, it will no longer reset with new random loot after a Save/Load. If you accidentally remove all the items from the container, just do a Quick Load without the Save.

Similarly, if the reroll of the chest only has one item in it, just reload, no need to save.

If one item is gold and another is common, always take the gold. If one item is blue (rare) and the other is gold, I usually take the gold even if I'm getting a worse deal, since it saves time in the long run, because selling an item takes time.

Repeat the above process until you run out of inventory space. Then travel to the nearest merchant and sell all of your ill gotten goods. Return to the container and repeat until you have the gold you need.

Here's a video. It's about Tier 3 schematics, but the principle is the same. If you are very lucky, you might get a few good mage schematics in the random reroll, which is what you really want, but that may take a long time, since you are completely at the mercy of the RNG.

There is another gold farming exploit, duping in the Undercroft storage container in Skyhold, that is purportedly faster, but A) you have to have attained Skyhold and B) I can only work it about 1 out of 20 tries, so it's not a time saver for me.

Qunari is probably the best race to use for mage, because of their buff to physical resistance. But yes, it does mean you give up on some nice armor options.
