When I farm for gold in the early game (which is to say, when I farm relatively high value items to sell for gold), I prefer the Tier 2 chest near Winterwatch Tower in the Hinterlands to the Tier 2 chest in Haven between the tents. The Hinterlands chest is, visually, much larger than the tiny little chest in Haven. The Hinterlands chest seems to produce more items, but I've never kept careful records so can't say for sure.
Here is the Hinterlands chest:

Does the visual size of the chest have any connection to the number of items in it? When the Haven (small) chest produces a blue item, it's the only item in the chest. When the Hinterlands chest produces a blue item, there is usually one other common item with it. Could still be my imagination, though.
Does the visual size of a chest relate to the number of items in it?

No, it's all RNG as to what you get for loot. Level means a bit, but not too much, just luck of the draw.

According to the art book, Tevinter chests with more sides (ex. pentagon vs triangle shape) are for more valuable stuff, but I don't know if it actually plays out that way in the game. I usually just loot and go. ![]()
