Hiya folks, when it comes to Mass Effect and Dragon Age I'm all about the story and fall short when it come to combat knowledge.

I want to shake up my next run of ME2,  my third run of a game tends to be my 'screw it I'm clicking all the rude options' playthrough.  I'm thinking I'd make a pretty awful Shep who's a full on renegade, super horny, humanity first and a big old racist against all aliens.  But he's gonna like Krogan, seeing them as his own personal army, and he'll admire the Geth.

So, I thought I'd try a different spin on ME2 by getting to Legion ASAP.  Recruiting the first 4 guys, Horizon, 5 short N7 missions to take me to the abandoned Reaper, then straight to the IFF to get Legion.  After that I can take him everywhere so I can hear all of his dialogue.  I feel sorry for the crew already, they're going to be very, very dead by the time I get there.

Then in ME3 I'll support the Geth the whole way through (no spoilers).

So, my class in ME1 doesn't matter so much.  The Lazarus project gives me a great excuse to switch up if I want to, so which class should Shep be?  If I'm with Legion all the time after recruitment then the other squaddie would be one of these guys - Kasumi, Zaeed, Grunt, Miranda or Jacob.  All the 'aliens' would be ignored (oh Garrus, I'm so so sorry).

I like being an infiltrator, would that compliment Legion?  I know a lot of you have pretty good super powers when it comes to combat combos and class stats so if you could help I'd be grateful.   :)

Infiltrator is fine.  Legion's powers are Hacking and Drone, so really neither is as reliant as other squadmates as if you are trying to mix together an area defense stripper with area CC or the area stripping -> pull -> warp team setup that is pretty reliable through the whole game.  Technically I suppose maxed Hacking is area CC against synthetics, but that evolution isn't that great anyway and organics outnumber synthetics pretty easily in the game.

As a result, I would probably just go with whatever class you like the most.  I would probably be least likely to go Adept if I am taking Legion on nearly every mission though, but it is still workable.

What difficulty level?

I would say Engineer is fairly wasted with Legion since he has a drone (a better drone than Tali's, in fact, since it cools down much faster with his class power) and that would be his main contribution (aside from his sniper rifle) on organic based missions. On synthetic missions his main contribution would be hacking.

Sentinel might make a good compliment on normal or veteran since you could be using Overload to strip synthetics to set them up for a hack. (at higher difficulties the only power a Sentinel ever gets to use is tech armor.)

Adept and Soldier would work fine: Adept for CC with Singularity, Soldier for stripping to set up hacks. In either of those cases Miranda would make a good second team mate since she can strip with Overload and/or blow up warp bombs if you go the Adept route.

I don't know how well Legion would work with a Vanguard. His drone is most useful as a distraction, but only because it is closer to the enemy than you are. If you are going to get right in the enemy's face with a charge, how well is the drone going to distract?

The same kind of applies to the Infiltrator. Since the Soldier is a better sniper than the Infiltrator, the best way to play an Infiltrator is with a CQC style where you sneak up on someone and shoot them in the face. After you decloak, are you going to be closer to the enemies than Legion's drone? If so, it won't be doing you much good.

At any rate, I wish you luck. I know when I brought Legion to Tali's recruitment mission it was the most fun I have ever had on that mission.

I'm playing on Normal mode.  I didn't know the soldier was a better sniper than the infiltrator, maybe I should go for that then.  I prefer to stay back and take guys out with the sniper rifle so it should suit me.  Thank you for the guide, I'll be sure to refer back to it when I load up ME2.

And yes, I'm looking forward to taking Legion to Haestrom, and also Tali's trial.  Turning up with a geth to save her from, well, geth.   Nice   :D

Sentinel is by far the most versatile class, and will work very well with Legion.
Keep in mind that Legion excels in 1) firepower, 2) tanking and 3) distraction. So the rest of the squad (Shepard and the second squadmate) must have defense-stripping and crowd-control powers.
It's possible to calculate the missions you'll do first and get trough the SM with zero casualties.
It's also possible to edit your save and have Legion recruited as soon as you arrive at the Normandy. You'll be able to see hidden dialogue.

Oh okay, thank you!

Defense-stripping and cc...thanks for pointing that out.  All that stuff goes right over my head, I'm useless at combat, so I'll try and remember.

As for the SM I'm planning on killing 3 specific people, or is it 4....but I'm sure I can make that happen.  I may have played ME2 twice but I've done the SM about 8 times within that so I have a good grasp of the maths.

What's that about getting Legion straight away?  I know there's dialogue for him in the big 4's recruitment missions, so originally he was able to be recruited any time you liked.  I didn't know you could make it happen though.

You can, as long as you edit your save (with Gibbed's Save Editor) and have him on your team as soon as possible.

If you are playing on Normal, you don't really need to worry as much about defense stripping since most enemies shouldn't have a defense layer (a bar of shields or armor over their health bar).

Whether Soldier is better at sniping than Infiltrator is debatable, and depends partly on the rifle you want to use and how you define better.  Soldier with Heightened Adrenaline Rush can do more damage in a single shot with the Widow or Mantis compared to Infiltrator under Cloak.  But since you cannot reload until after Adrenaline Rush duration is over, Infiltrator reload-canceling with Incinerate is often times better for clearing mooks or even armored targets.

You should probably just pick a class that you haven't played before if you have not tried all of them, or just go with the one you find the most fun if you have.

In that case I should try Soldier as I've been an Infiltrator and a Vanguard until now...thank you for the info!

My two cents: Sentinel, Infiltrator, or Engineer.

Since you are playing on Normal, defense stripping will not be a big deal to you, but I still think Sentinel and Engineer are good compliments regardless.

1. Sentinel's Tech Armor has a hidden bonus, where it will reset your squadmate cooldowns when activated. Therefore, you can use the Sentinel's Tech Armor to bypass the long cooldown of Legion's Combat Drone (30 second base cooldown). Add in Tali's Combat Drone as well for two drones that you can bypass the cooldown with Tech Armor.

2. Engineer and Infiltrator have AI Hacking so on missions with mechs or Geth, you could have three AI Hackings at once which is always fun. Infiltrator is a natural sniper (native sniper time dilation in passive talent) so you can hang back and snipe if you do not want to move up much. Infiltrator has access to more weapons so that may help you as well if you have trouble with the combat.

Thanks for that Caesar, bypassing the combat drone cooldown would be a nice ability, someone else mentioned Sentinel too so I'll take a look.  It's a class I haven't tried before.

Just an update in case someone stumbles on this thread in the future...

I went with Sentinel, it worked well on Normal mode and I loved the class.

However rushing to get Legion as early as possible was a bust.  I knew he had dialogue on all recruitment and loyalty missions which is why I did it in the first place, to hear if he had anything unique to say.

Welp he didn't.  It was great taking him on Tali's missions of course and there are a few extra bits in Samara's mission.

There was an extra line of dialogue on Project Overlord where the Doctor asked if he was safe but I was surprised that Legion had nothing interesting to say on the geth dreadnought or for the rest of the DLC.  Given what's going on you'd think he'd have some opinions to share.  This is where ME3 beats ME2 hands down.

LoTSB had nothing except one line of dialogue that you can hear here -

Every other recruitment and loyalty mission (as far as I can remember) just had generic lines and most ppl didn't flinch at a geth walking by.

So I wouldn't bother tbh.  Absolutely take him on Tali's recruitment and loyalty mission, and maybe Project Overlord, but other than that it wasn't worth it.  The crew were extremely dead and forgotten by the time I finally got to them, and having such a long gap between getting the IFF and going thru the Omega 4 relay ruins the narrative a bit.

So yeah, there you go.  I wanted to see if I could shake up the mission order of ME2 to get a slightly different experience but it turns out no, not too much.  <_<

Did you take him to meet the Council? You get some interesting dialogue in that case, though you have to have saved the Council in ME1 and put off meeting with Anderson until after you get Legion.

Crap. Nope, didn't do that. They were dead anyways but now I'm curious...

Whichever is best at throwing that abominable thing out of the nearest airlock. Soldier probably has the most muscle, but adept could use their biotics, so I'd recommend either of them.
