Ok just finished it. What is the point of looting items when the game is done? There some great drops and I wished I had them earlier. But why at all? I would expect gold, just because we are in the habit of looting everything.

There is a stash of 200K gold in the first elven ruin. You have to go back to the area after getting the ability to explode things (but before going to Darvaarad). Granted, at that point you have nothing to spend it on, but it still makes the bank balance look good. Plus, quizzy retirement fund. :P

Notice that most of these weapons and accessories are novelty items with unique and irregular abilities. They aren't normal things that make the character stronger in a traditional sense. They just show off some oddities that can be done with the combat system. That strange sword for example that causes monster tentacles to grow out of enemies struck by it. Another example is the beehive stick. These things should not exist in the game world.

Like you wrote, this is the end of the game, so there's no point. That's why the items are just "neat" rather than necessary.

Well, you can use the Golden Nug to take the schematics back into the original game. And the DLC does in fact add a whole bunch of new items to the main game.

Anyway, I'd rather have a few interesting items than gold thats even more useless.
