Ok everyone, I think I may of found a solution, it's working wonders for me and may help you all, first you will need:

1. Download and install Daemon Tools

2. Go to www.gamecopyworld.com search under PC on the right side select the alphabetical menu 'F-M' , scroll down the list of games till you find Mass Effect 2 under M and click it to open.

3. You will find a list of cracks or images, select Mass Effect 2 [MULTI5] No-DVD/Fixed Image. download it by clicking on the adjacent 'floppy disk' icon.

4. Once downloaded you will need an unzipping program like Winrar (The most commonly used one) to uncompress the file. Take out the two files and you can either place them in your Mass Effect 2 main folder or on your desktop, it doesn't matter really.

4. Providing you're familiar with the use of Daemon Tools you will want to mount that image. (To mount the image, first run the program - it will be displayed on your windows toolbar, lower right - left click on Daemon tool icon select the said device then navigate to where you placed your uncompressed file)

5. Done! it should work fine, now you may receive an error message upon loading them mounted image, but just click ok and ignore it, now when you launch the Mass Effect 2 launcher and click play, it should work!

Alright darlins' hope it helps =)

Okay. Good news. See my post above for details regarding my system. Your mileage may vary.

Based one person's solution I tried the "two" optical disk approach -- but with only one optical drive. This is what I did -- I hope it helps someone.

First, I made a backup image (.iso) of one of the DVDs using Roxio software. I chose disc 2. No real reason. I named the file ME_disc2.iso and saved it to my hard drive.

Next, I downloaded winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe from Microsoft's website and installed it.

Then, I mounted the ME_disc2.iso as a Virtual CD (mounted on Z:, for example).

So, in summary, I had MassEffect2 (the retail disc 1) mounted in my real optical drive (D:MassEffect2) and the image of disc 2 mounted in my Virtual Drive (Z:ME2_Disc2). I started the game and Poof! Viola! There it was! It started -- without any complaints about bogus CD Authentication.

I hope it helps! Played for 5 continuous hours -- no problems. It all worked -- including my downloaded content.

P.S. For what it's worth, I do not have nor have I ever had the daemontools referenced elsewhere in this thread so you could try that first if you'd prefer.  This is an alternative solution you might want to try.

Yes. I'm pretty sure this is normal. It's also required for Dragon Age:Origins, another recent Bioware release. Perhaps with other games a "Full Install" can avoid having the disc in the drive, but I suspect Bioware, and others are now imposing more constraints to protect their software from piracy.

Thanks svon. We'll that is too inconvenient. Anyway, if this is the only way to keep those pirate games from playing, this inconvenience is just fine with me. I just hope bioware fix this issue soon. Thanks again for your quick reply.

Just got this error, I've been playing the game with no issues till I downloaded and installed the dragon armour and then the crash site, my guess is one of them stuffs it.

Hope this is fixed soon.

I just got this error today as well. The game has been working just fine for the last week, but today was te first time I took the cd out of the computer since I got it. IT was only out for about two minutes, and I made sure it's clean and everything. I haven't changed any of the settings, and the only thing new I've put on my computer is Adobe Photoshop 6....

I'm not sure if that's the problem, but I remember that when I used to use my PC tablet, that the drivers would interfere with some games.. so I'm gonna try uninstalling that.. but anyone have any ideas?

similar problem but i find the game does work, my cd is in drive but it asks me to place it in, so i open and close drive containing disk click ok and then.... wait yes wait...it says (not responding) but just leave it a minute and it boots up to the intro vids and plays fine.

Pain in the ass, agreed. but at least it works - still requires a fix tho, why a game with such a huge install and a registration key linked to an online database requires a cd in the drive... just cant figure out the reasoning behind it tbh. its like fitting a dodgy cheap padlock to a bank vault.

Same problem here, had the cd in my drive for a couple of weeks then took it out to play dragon age origins and today I get the message, The only change to pc was sp2 was installed for vista. This is completly unacceptable I payed for the game and should be able to play it without all this hassel, Im surprised bioware have not responded to this thread.

I too have the "failed to authenticate" problem and only found this thread after posting my own (I don't feel too bad, because bioware isn't on this thread with a solution!). gosh, I hate having to do this daemon tool route... I'm sure it's fine, but why do I have to use additional software to make a game work out of the box??!? I'll probably break down tomorrow and try it... I've seen several references to the daemon tool fix and they generally seem to work.

Nevermind, some dude mentioned to disable the DLA on my dvd drive and it's working now. I don't understand why it did this to me after weeks of working correctly beforehand, but...all's well that ends well.

I am having the same problem. Is there a fix?

yah, it's called No-DVD crack... :innocent:
doing it with all my original games, why the hell not, I bought them, so why not crack them? Better for the discs too, so they don't get all scratched and useless after a while... ;)

[EDIT]oh, maybe I should have read the thread first, already been suggested... :pinched:

There is a way to fix it.
Go to Windows/System32/drivers/etc
open hosts file with notepad and make sure it looks like that

http://img534.images...9689/hostsa.jpg

I thought I was the only one having that problem so I have reinstalled the game with my original cd (good thing I've saved English files from previous installation). This issue happens when you install Firewalker DLC and probably Command and Conquer 4 Tiberian Twilight. I had the same problem after installing CnC4 too. I think something is being added to hosts file during installation that blocks ME2 DRM.

Tried that fix, but Windows 7 won't let me change the hosts file - says I don't have permission. Being a computer idiot, I don't know how to give myself permission. Any other suggestions?

I tried that as well without result. Honestly, I'm running out of patience with this entire setup. The disc protection for the last Mass Effect was annoying, but it at least WORKED after installing DLC.
