I'm fixin' it but these restrictions are ridiculous. EA and all the other massive game producers make it REALLY hard to like a game. I'm still a die hard Bioware fan though...you guys know what we want and you give it to us and more. Cant wait for your next game!

Only the ME-1 game had the install limit, and EA set up some kind of way to reset the counter every time you uninstalled, so what it amounted to was you could install to five different PCs, or upgrade your PC five times without uninstalling, and after that, you had to contact EA's technical support.

I have not Registration key?

You will have to complain about that to the vendor who sold you the game.

I had the exact same problem, but check if your CD/DVD drive is shown when in 'My Computer', as if it isn't then that would be your problem. :D

I played through this game months ago when it came out, and figured today that I would buy some of the DLC and give it another go. The game worked perfectly before, but now I get the "Failed to Authenticate Disc" error, which is just downright absurd. I can't be bothered screwing around with tech support to fix something which I didn't break in the first place, so am ready to give up and use the cracked .exe.

Will all the DLC download and work properly if I use a scam .exe?

Oh, by the way, why do developers not realize that copy protection so extreme it forces paying customers to crack the games they purchase if they want to play them is NOT a good way to earn our respect? I wonder why I didn't just get an illegal copy off the bat and save myself a couple hours of hassle trying to get the game working.

i buy the game on launch day (disc) beat the game twice then i decide to play my favorite game after a few months, only to find that my disc is suddenly "not authentic". If the probem started 4 months ago, then shouldn't there be a solution by now?... Someone please fix this in a legal way... soon! I rather not have another thing to be pissed off about

I was getting annoyed with inserting the DVD each time I play so this is what I did: got EA Download Manager, added my CD-Key to it, uninstalled ME2, downloaded & installed it using EA DM - now I no longer need the physical disc.

I suddenly got this problem with both ME2 and DA:O. EA support were no help, and I FINALLY figured out that I had to re-insert the disc and let it launch via autorun. Wish I had read this thread before wasting all that time with EA Support. I might take posters' advice and get the no-CD crack.

EA Support were no help when I was getting install errors either. After 3 days of to-ing and fro-ing, they told me they were out of ideas. <_<  I eventually worked out a fix on my own, but I'm still feeling irritated about the whole thing.

I was having this problem and eventually worked out that it was my computer not detecting the cd drive, there was a work around on yahoo answers:

FIRST: click start.

go to: RUN

in run type REGEDIT.

This will open the registry editor.

click the + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Then click the + sign next to SYSTEM

Then click the + sign next to CURRENTCONTROLSET

Then click the + Sign next to CONTROL

Then click the + sign next class

NOW we're done clicking on + signs.

NEXT STEP click on the FOLDER labeled

4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

now there should be more options on the right hand side of the this window.

Look for anything Labeled UPPER FILTERS or LOWER FILTERS if any or both are present right click them. choose DELETE.

Now reboot the machine.

TA DA. your Drives are now listed again!!

I had played ME2 just fine earlier.. then I bought all the additional missions, but I figured I was still missing out, since the choices the vanilla shepard made did not jibe with me.

So I decided to buy ME 1 and play thàt through first, had a lot of fun doing so.

Today, I wanted to start a new game of ME2 using my character that completed ME1 my way, and suddenly this 'failed to authenticate disc" CRAP pops up...

I'm not that technically gifted.. I don't wànt to have to spend hours trying to get my system to recognize my game which I really did BUY, using real MONEY.

I expect a game that functioned before to function when I decide to play it again after a period of inactivity.

If thàt is too much to ask from Bioware products, maybe I really should reconsider pinning such big expectations on The Old Republic...

I'm worried if I uninstall the game I won't be able to reïnstall, cause hey, it won't recognize the f*cking CD..

so using the CD as a frisbee and avoiding further Bioware purchases seems to be the hotfix to a lot of future headaches.. thanks for nothing, Bioware

well after trying to instal the game for the very first time i got to the part where i had to swap discs, then it would not read my 2´nd disc so i tried and i tried only to get more and more frustrated, then suddenly it found the disc and i got the installation to work, ( This is also a common problem ) then i DL´d the DLC´s i had acces to and wanted to play the game after that was done, then i got the "Failed to authenticate" error and i swapped cd/dvd drives from 3 different computers all with the same result " Failed to authenticate" error so that kinda concludes that its NOT a drive fault. I check and rechecked and double rechecked my drivers for my system and all is up to date so thats not the problem either. Im running windows 7 and xp and the same error pops up on both systems and i do NOT have any software like deamon tools etc on my comp so this is not the problem either,,,, i have read almost every post there is on these issues and it all boils down to 2 simple things, either the disc´s EA are using are ****ty and crappy or the cd protection is simply just screwing people over and making all these errors happen....

Having this problem now too. Installed the game, it worked perfectly. Updated to Version 1.02, and now it has a failure to authenticate. Anyone found a solution to this or heard anything from BioWare?

Same issue just started on my computer too. But the really stupid thing about mine is that I downloaded the game from steam, and I don't have any discs! It is the most retarded error I have every seen!

I bought this game secondhand from a friend and it played like a dream. No problems whatsoever. Then I imported a character from ME1 and it still played just fine. I spent $15.00 on a Cerberus network membership and downloaded Cerberus Weapons, Cerberus ARC Projector, and Normandy Crash site. I played the Crash Site and it still worked fine. Then I downloaded the Firewalker pack and now it is giving me the Failed to Authenticate Disk error. The first disk is sitting in the drive (which still runs ME 1 just fine) and I cannot get anything done. Is there any help for this, can I uninstall The Firewalker DLC and play the game that way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Had you ever patched the game? My guess is that Firewalker installed a patch (it's a more recent DLC than the others you name), and that the patching somehow went wrong.

I'm afraid I don't know of a way to undo that; the old .exe that worked is probably already deleted. My recommendation would be to re-install, install patch 1.02 first thing, and then confirm that the game is still loading without any disk check problems. Only then load in all the DLCs.

OK, I actually solved the problem with help from a friends Java-Fu and my own Software Judo. Between us we beat it into submission.

Ok everyone, I think I may of found a solution, it's working wonders for me and may help you all, first you will need: <br />
<br />
1. Download and install Daemon Tools<br />
2. Go to www.gamecopyworld.com search under PC on the right side select the alphabetical menu 'F-M' , scroll down the list of games till you find Mass Effect 2 under M and click it to open. <br />
3. You will find a list of cracks or images, select Mass Effect 2 [MULTI5] No-DVD/Fixed Image. download it by clicking on the adjacent 'floppy disk' icon. <br />
4. Once downloaded you will need an unzipping program like Winrar (The most commonly used one) to uncompress the file. Take out the two files and you can either place them in your Mass Effect 2 main folder or on your desktop, it doesn't matter really.<br />
4. Providing you're familiar with the use of Daemon Tools you will want to mount that image. (To mount the image, first run the program - it will be displayed on your windows toolbar, lower right - left click on Daemon tool icon select the said device then navigate to where you placed your uncompressed file)<br />
5. Done! it should work fine, now you may receive an error message upon loading them mounted image, but just click ok and ignore it, now when you launch the Mass Effect 2 launcher and click play, it should work!<br />
<br />
Alright darlins' hope it helps =)

I tried it but it still doesnt seem to work =/ getting the "Disc cannot be authenticated" error and Im using windows 7. Bought the game from game stop too.  Any other ideas? Im about out of free memory on my laptop so I dont wanna download a ton of programs, ect.

Your disk could be scratched or dirty, you could have some dirt/fluff blocking the laser, there could be smoe other reason.
You havent said if you are having problems installing, or playing the game after its been installed.
Also, if you dont have much free disk space left on your laptop, expect performance to be very limited, as you will not have much room forthe swap file to operate.
The no-disk/fixed exe file is about the same size as the original executable, so if you dont have a couple of megs to spare, your system will really under-perform.

There is a way to fix it.
Go to Windows/System32/drivers/etc
open hosts file with notepad and make sure it looks like that

http://img534.images...9689/hostsa.jpg

^ worked for me once but not anymore... strange... I still have to insert the disc to get the autorun :pinched:

1) Please register the game on the forums. This is not an accusation, but given the spate of users with illegally downloaded copies coming to the forums asking for help, forum registration is the only way we can be sure we are dealing with a legit copy. Illegally downloaded copies include hacked and modified files which could be either corrupt, or full of malware. Once its registered, we will be happy to help. Forums Registration here;
http://social.biowar...es_register.php
2) Please post a full problem report as per this thread: http://social.biowar...6/index/4795299

I'm a bit late on this but I've been playing ME2 so after about a week of not playing, I come back and this "failed to authenticate disk" error keeps popping up for both disks. So i press cancel and then it boots for a second then dies... WTF?! So i go to my computer and my computer doesn't even sense the disk. Idk if its just my computer or what but I'm ready to grab the baseball bat and whallop my computer. I've registered it on the bioware network and everything and it still wants to do that. Please Help!

Sounds like either your disk has some dirt or fingermarks on it and needs cleaning, or your drive has failed.
Put another disk in the drive and see if it can read that. If not, then its a drive problem, and nothing to do with the game.
If you want to play, go to gamecopyworld.com, and download one of their no-disk executables that matches your game version.
