With all the Andromeda chat I thought this might be an interesting topic.

Are there any rules/lessons/guidelines you'll be trying follow when you venture into Andromeda for the first time?

If I had a time machine one of the lamest things I'd do with it is tell myself, before playing DA:O for the first time, a whole bunch of things I should have done.  Luckily a kinda new-ish franchise is here and I can actually do those things this time round.  The biggest things I'm going to try and do would be -

1.  Avoid spoilers at ALL costs.  Even neglecting twitter/youtube/forums altogether if necessary.  I ended up learning wayyyyy too much about DA:O, DA2 and especially Inquisition before I played it.  Many spoilers were accidental, for example last week I was an hour away from the Temple of Mythal when, absent mindedly reading a forum post about something else, someone said...

Spoiler

Bugger.  Now I'll never know if I would have gasped audibly at that moment when it was revealed *looks wistfully into the distance with a tear in my eye*.

So yeah, fingers firmly in ears and hands over eyes till I'm done.

2.  For goodness sake make the effort to read the codex!  There's actually some interesting stuff in there but I pout like a child and don't bother until my 2nd or 3rd run.

3.  Take my time and look around every corner, even if I'm rushing to somewhere super interesting.

4.  For pity's sake don't google 'which is the best romance'.  Just go for whoever appeals to me.

5.  Also don't google 'what happens if you side with the ____'.  I'll choose what feels right and live the consequences, whatever they end up being.

6.  Try and read all the comics/books before I play.  (yeah right, pipe dreams)

7.  Make up my own mind about the game before I go searching for other people's opinions.  If I love it I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon of hating it,  letting others convince me I should hate it too.

Of course this works the other way round as well.  If I'm not impressed, that's okay, but I have to try and not shout at ppl on the internet who actually liked it.

I should have done all these things before I started Dragon Age 1, 2 and 3.  And Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3.  But I didn't.  So with Andromeda I can reset and approach a new Bioware title in what is hopefully the best way possible.

What will you do differently this time, if anything?

Same with any game I try to avoid spoilers though that is easier said than done on the forums. So I guess I'll have to stay off the forums.

Sounds sensible enough.

That said, hard to avoid spoilers completely if you are suspicious due to previous games and want to verify that the game is

actually good and do not contain nasty surprises like the ME3 ending.

Personally, I'll be willing to suffer a spoiler or two if that's what it takes for me to avoid the next disappointment in video games.

(that is not to say that ME:A can't possibly be the greatest game ever)

True. true.  Tho in my case I'll buy anyway because I'm a huge Bioware fan.  It's harder when you're on the fence though, or, like me with Inquisition, waiting for the Game of the Year edition because you can't afford the price on release.

I'm definitely guilty of looking up romance options, though that usually from a practicality point of view as I rarely get to do multiple playthroughts these days.  I am going to try avoiding it though.

Avoiding spoilers is pretty easy if you don't stay on the forum.  At this point, for games I am anticipating, I even avoid game reviews.  It could be the worst game ever, I'd rather find out myself.

But if you avoid spoilers then the impact of those nasty surprises (good or bad) will be even greater!  Just make sure to record your reaction and put it on youtube.

My one rule is no spoilers.

Everything else comes naturally.  Without spoilers, I have to make every tough decision/romance/etc. on gut instinct and it makes the games much more replayable after I get through my first go and find out how many things I can change in a second playthrough.

Well, I wouldn't want to feel again the disappointment I felt after ME3, and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't really like to feel something like this either.

If as you say a highly anticipated game for you turns out to be "the worst game ever", I would imagine that it would have a rather negative impact on your mood.

That said, I agree about youtube, who knows, your reaction might be the next big viral video and make you some cash. Silver lining and all that.

Avoiding the forums completely from the time the game releases, until I beat the game.

Earlier if there is another script leak.

If you don't do either of those two things you're bound to get spoiled, whether you want to or not. Someone will post major spoilers in a thread title, either because they're trolling, or because the OP is a moron who never considered that there might be people browsing who haven't read the script leak or beat the game.

No concern for unpleasant surprises, or otherwise low quality / mediocre game?

I'm going to try and avoid spoilers. I feel like I knew way too much about DA:I before it's release. My fault, since I read every scrap of news I could get my hands on but I'd really like to go into ME:A without knowing much at all and experience it fresh.

Critic reviews and previews can usually give you a decent idea of what you're getting into. I bought DA2 months after release for example, when the price had significantly dropped.

Forums are a bad place to get an impression of a game's quality I think, even if you manage to avoid spoilers, because fan reviews tend to be hyperbolic rants. It's either the most amazing game ever created or the biggest steaming pile of filth ever shat by man or beast.

- Get in the Multiplayer bandwagon early on. I took too long to even try it in ME3, I lost the community learning curve and the single player lasted less than it should as a consequence.

- I won't say ""well, this will have to do" after exiting the character creator for the third time. My Ryder will be ready when it's ready, and I will take my time with him. (Of course, I need some help from the devs with this one, so "SIDEBURN SLIDER BIOWER PLS!"

- I`ll accept that my first p´laytrough will probably not be my canon one, so I'll decide whatever I feel like I should.

- Only go out with my favorite companions. I'll rotate this time around.

Same.  If I know for sure that I'm buying it then there's no need to look up reviews.  Just pick it and go, form my own opinions, then poke my head up over the parapet and see what everyone else thought after I've played the whole thing.

There was a script leak?  I'm relatively new to the forums, only been lurking a year, so I wasn't aware.  Which game?

There have been a few times that a thread title has spoiled something, even when I was avoiding the DAI forum.  Some new threads showed up in the Recent Topics tab on the homepage and their titles gave away a major plot point.  So I tried, but there it is anyway.   <_<

You're right, completely avoiding the forums is the only way I guess.

Same, in a nutshell.  I have to do better next time lol.

Oh god yes, especially if there isn't a ME equivalent of the Black Emporium.  Realising your mouth is a teensy bit too low down your face when you're 5 hours in drives me crazy (if it's unfixable).  I often don't even realise until a cutscene shows up the ugly ugly ugly I managed to create.

And for some unknown reason in DA 1+2 and ME 1+2 I felt that my first run had to be the canon one.  Why?  Play it first, have fun, learn stuff, get your **** together, THEN do the canon run.   I've learnt now tho, finally.

Mass Effect 3 had two separate script leaks. I believe DA:I had a leak as well.

Damn that sucks.   :(

I hope whoever was responsible was thoroughly whipped.  I'll get Bull, he'd probably enjoy that.

Yeah I would like to avoid spoilers which would be made a lot easier if people would start using spoiler tags!

I always start out reading all the codex and then about halfway through the game I give up. My main plan is to play through 1-3 again before the new one comes out.

I don't really care that much about spoilers, as i am much more interested in seeing how the story got there then exactly what happened. I went into Kotor knowing the twist, but it was still very well done. I went into Game of Thrones knowing about a certain wedding, but it was still well done and exciting. So yeah do not care that much about spoilers. Fallout 4 ending was ruined for me though and that was kinda meh, as i adore Bethesda games.

I will probably spend the first few hours browsing the codex, i hope its voice acted yet again, i felt that was a nice addition.

"You are Shepard." - lol. - this can have some unpleasant consequences.

1. Realize you're playing a pre-defined character that you only change the appearance of.

2. Your choices don't really matter that much.

3. You will have chronic hero syndrome no matter which path you choose.

I always try to avoid spoilers for a game that I'm really excited about. Some of Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 were spoiled for me before I finished them, so I'm going to try to do as much as I can to avoid Andromeda spoilers.

Always go into media blackout mode as soon as I get my hands on the game. Did it for ME3, DAI and Fallout 4. People will spoil, sometimes unintentionally sometimes very intentionally so it's just for the best to stay away until you complete it. F*ckin hate getting spoiled.

What's really annoying is when people post spoilers on a topic that has nothing to do with the movie/game/etc. the spoilers are for. For example, an article on cooking that has a comment with Star Wars spoilers.

This.

There is so many game fundamentalists online who are so passionate about BioWare games that they are actually and accidentially ruining my true experience. Some of them can also argument very well. And they have a huge impact in how I look the games today. For example, Liara was the main reason I fell in love with Mass Effect series, I instantly liked her

(I am playing Kotor 1 atm and I like to have one special person as my company because she reminds me of Liara - and yes, this is my first time so no spoilers).

So I was very surprised to find out how much hate I found towards Liara...

Ending discussion is also a fine example. If you're not in the group of destroyers, you're out. But maybe I just have to focus to my own experience and try not to start a new ending discussion here :-----).

I try to avoid spoilers as much as I can, and also do my best to refrain from looking up in the wiki what will happen if I do this or that when confronted with a tough decision.

I got into the Dragon Age and Mass Effect universes about a year ago, when EA gave DA:O for free. The good thing about this is that up until then, I hadn't payed much attention to BioWare's games (I know, I know, I'm still amazed I had survived that long without them haha), so I was completely oblivious as to what was it all about. As the noob I was, and even when I hadn't been spoiled much, I looked up some important moments, so, although the plot twists and new characters still blew my mind, there's stuff I wish I hadn't looked up beforehand.

Also, and greatfully, I didn't find out about this forum until around June this year, when I had already played DA:O, DA 2, and the entire ME trilogy, so I didn't have any preconceived ideas.

It's been different with DAI, as I'm still in my first playthrough and here I am, in the forums, where I've already encountered a few spoilers, even when I do my best to avoid them.

So, after all this rambling, yes, I agree with all the points described in the first post.
