I try to avoid spoilers as much as I can, and also do my best to refrain from looking up in the wiki what will happen if I do this or that when confronted with a tough decision.

I got into the Dragon Age and Mass Effect universes about a year ago, when EA gave DA:O for free. The good thing about this is that up until then, I hadn't payed much attention to BioWare's games (I know, I know, I'm still amazed I had survived that long without them haha), so I was completely oblivious as to what was it all about. As the noob I was, and even when I hadn't been spoiled much, I looked up some important moments, so, although the plot twists and new characters still blew my mind, there's stuff I wish I hadn't looked up beforehand.

Also, and greatfully, I didn't find out about this forum until around June this year, when I had already played DA:O, DA 2, and the entire ME trilogy, so I didn't have any preconceived ideas.

It's been different with DAI, as I'm still in my first playthrough and here I am, in the forums, where I've already encountered a few spoilers, even when I do my best to avoid them.

So, after all this rambling, yes, I agree with all the points described in the first post.

Hah, it was the same for me!  No clue about DA (but I heard the shitstorm overhead when ME3 came out).  I hadn't played any Bioware games at all and then Origin sent out a free copy of DA:O to celebrate Inquisition coming out.  And I fell down the Bioware rabbit hole.

Unfortunately I found the wiki and this forum early on and couldn't help researching things.  Too many things.  So the few times I was surprised by something are precious to me cause they're not as common as I'd like.

One that stands out is, in ME3 ...

Spoiler

Now I'm rambling too....

my basic rule always for my first run through any game is not worry about getting top scores or anything but just learning the basics of the game. Once I've figured out the basics then try to expand on it.

Since I was burned with ME3, I've made myself the rule to not preorder anymore any ME game, and not buy the collection edition.

I'll buy the game only after some friends I know will have tested it, expecially how it end. With ME3, since they finished the game before me (I have this little problem that is called work that slow me down...) and they advised me the end was horrible. I finished the game thinking they were exaggerating. it was actually worse.

So as much as I would not go into spoiler, since buy a game who's out from little time is expensive, I have to protect my investiment, and buy only when I have reviews from my sources that I would not end up like with ME3, were I play only until a certain mission, than shut the PS3 because I can't stand how the trilogy end.

Sad, but I prefer spoilers than waste money.

My new rules for the new Bioware game(s).

1. Do not go to the midnight release.  Being the only girl in what is otherwise a complete sausage-fest, while getting gawked at as if you're the first female creature they've ever seen, is unnerving.

2. Not to bother responding to the inevitable flood of mouth-breathers who flood the forum after the release to whine about gay/trans/female characters.

3. Work, school, and personal hygiene come BEFORE non-stop playing.

4. Don't get so drunk while playing that I don't remember the best parts.

5. Remember to eat something (not Doritos).

That's all I got.

Hehe, nice.  I've never been to a midnight release of a game (or anything) but I can imagine I'd feel super uncomfortable too.

Numbers 2 thru 5 - seconded.   :D

...though for me it's popcorn.  Number one rule, don't take snacks to gaming sessions.   They will have disappeared by the end, while I have no knowledge whatsoever of what could have happened to them

No preorder.  At all.

Spoil myself for ALL THE THINGS!  I could have spoiled myself on ME3's ending.  But chose not to, to my sorrow.  I won't make that mistake again.  Sad that it had to come to that.

I also heard all the commotion with ME3 ending. Couldn't understand why anyone would be so annoyed and angry with a game and a company, so didn't pay much attention to it until I got DAO, loved it and decided to give the ME trilogy a try.

I'll keep the rambling...
Spoiler

So, all in all, I'll do my best to not use the forums/wiki to help me with the new MEA and to avoid any spoilers. Too many moments from the trilogy would have been better if they had been a surprise.

I won't have any problems regarding friends spoiling it to me, non of my real life ones play ME, so I won't have to be wary on that aspect.

And, finally, no youtube watching and no review reading

My big rule is to not pay attention to any forum chatter unless it comes from someone whose taste and judgement I respect, which is a fairly short list. I got burned on DA2 by paying too much attention to the criticisms.

Other than that, no spoilers, to the extent I can manage it. Just play the character and see what hapoens. And play on Normal the first time through; having to replay a boss fight a few times because I don't know what I'm doing really breaks up the narrative.

You're not alone, no one in my life knows anything about Bioware, or even gaming for that matter.  They think playing Professor Layton makes them gamers.   So when I asked for the DA Library Edition and World of Thedas for Christmas they happily bought them for me, but gave me some strange 'wtf is that' looks.   :D

I've heard from a few ppl that they've had a game ruined before they even finished it due to all the hate.  That's why I try so hard to form my own opinion and let it set solid before I start reading it.  Not always possible tho, unless you live in a cave.

What got spoiled for you? I was in something of the same boat -- I didn't get to DAI until the demo came out and I discovered that my poor old Dell c521 would actually run it..

I´m willing to be entertained, which is why I do not care for the criticism, the rage and the shitstorms.

I will try to avoid spoilers this time. But I don´t think I will manage. I use the forum to relax and wonder about humanity, so it will be hard to avoid spoilers.

I think we are going a bit off topic regarding what you told and asked in the initial post, but rambling feels so good haha

Regarding some answers by other people, i have to say that the amount of hate I found towards DA 2 when I actually read stuff surprised me quite a lot. I actually liked the game, and if I had read about it beforehand, I'm sure I would not have enjoyed it that much.

They weren't big spoilers about the main plot line, but stuff regarding character's missions, this one dying at some point,
Spoiler
... You know, the usual minor stuff that I would have avoided if I hadn't entered these forums haha

Yeah you're right *slapped wrists*.

That's exactly the point.  You can't help but let some of that criticism seep in your brain and colour your idea of the game when you play.  I remember seeing a video on YT nitpicking ME3...or was is ME2... I quit watching pretty quick, but one of the things that stayed with me was Shep's animation for unholstering a gun.  No matter which one of the 4 you chose, she/he always did the same movement over the shoulder, even if you're using the one on the lower back.

I had never noticed that before.  But after that video, guess what I couldn't stop seeing?

And now I won't be able to unsee it... I hadn't realized that, and now it will stay with me forever ;_;

Stuff I read about ME were how the ending/s sucked, what a plain character Jacob was or how to solve a particular problem. I would have realized (or not) all that by myself, but having read about it conditioned how I played.

You have joined the enemy, can't believe we lost you so soon D:

However, now that we are at it, what other stuff influenced you when playing the ME series? I know there are few things worse than the unhosltering animation, but I'm sure you will come up with something haha

Yeah, I'm Cerberus now.   B)

I expected a terrible ending, and got one that I was actually okay with.  I freaking hate Synthesis, but overall I thought it was alright.  I'd like something different of course.  I would have had a simple 'the reapers die no matter what.  It's just how, and what you're prepared to sacrifice to do it, that comes in 3 different flavours'.

The amount of times I read this about ME2...I've honestly lost count and the thing was I wasn't even looking for it.

Spoiler
Learning that in ME1 seems like crazy talk, but nope, it happens, and I knew 3 weeks ago cause I couldn't keep away from the damn forums. /facepalm.

I remember just before ME3 a recommended YT vid popped up on the sidebar called

Spoiler
Bloody hell, how am I supposed to avoid that?  The amount of DAI vids with titles in huge letters, saying things like
Spoiler
or, the latest one that spoiled me for Trespasser was
Spoiler

Now I say 'not interested' for everyone of those buggers in the hope YT gets the hint.

I then manipulated the SM, ending up with 3 runs to get everyone to live after reading how to do it.  Maybe I should have played it and lived with the consequences.  However those were that Tali died purely because I didn't yet have enough renegade points to tell Tali's judges to go f themselves, so had to wait till after the SM to do it.

Honestly I wasn't too influenced with ME, it's DA that I ruined for myself by second guessing far too many choices.  I knew too much, sometimes my own fault for researching, other times an accident like a reference in a seemingly okay forum thread.

Careful though, those Cerberus guys might want to use you as an indoctrination test subject.

Youtube videos have spoiled things to me before as well.
Spoiler

Regarding the DAI spoilers you've written, can't say anything about them. Currently being in my first playthrough of the game, I decided not to open those in your post haha

I've also been spoiled more with the DA games than with the ME ones, probably because I played Origins and 2 before Shepard's trilogy, and took me some time to realize how much it sucked to not have experienced it without any kind of influence. DAO forum has helped with the DAI spoilers I've read so far, as I wasn't expecting to find them there.

My curiosity always backfires. Seems like I'll never learn.

Pssht I'm not indoctrinated!   By the way can I show you a brochure for our lovely new holiday park on Horizon?  It's called Sanctuary, you'll love it, you get a loyalty card and everything.

I don't blame you when it comes to DAI.  There was a situation with erm, someone or something, animal, vegetable or mineral, and I wondered 'if I hadn't been spoiled about that, would I have figured it out?'.  I like to think I would have but I'll never know.  Maybe it only seemed obvious because I knew already, or maybe I'd have been a clever clogs and gone all Sherlock on it.  Actually that happened maybe 2 and a half times in DAI come to think of it.

I could have written that last line of yours.  If curiosity kills the cat, and if I was a kitty, I'd be very very dead by now.  'I just want to see what this one choice does, it shouldn't hurt'.   Omg that reminds me of when I ruined ME3 Citadel for myself  -

Reading, hearing or seeing spoilers don't bother me. So spoil away. It won't stop me from playing the game.

My first playthrough will be just to do what I can, and if I miss anything, which I know I will, I can do another playthrough to see the parts I missed. No big deal
