How do I explore Emprise du Lion?

I'm still working through my first complete playthrough of DA:I, but I'm getting the hang of rough terrain (place a shard somewhere ridiculous, I can grab it.) But Emprise Du Lion has me totally baffled.

I've gone through everywhere I can get to, but I've still only uncovered the northwest corner of the map. Everywhere else is sealed off by an IMPENETRABLE wall of rock. I can find no passage, no path to scale, no cave to go under. the only spot not walled in by sheer cliffs is a frozen waterfall, which rates as a deadly drop no matter how far down it I can get first.

What's the secret? How do I open up the rest of the map? Is there some too-obvious-to-be-found route up the mountain somewhere? Do I need to finish a certain quest first? Do I need a mod that allows me to fly?

(And why do the Gamemakers feel compelled to include obstacles so stupid hard that the game stops being any fun?)

The best way to unlock Emprise du Lion is focus on the main quest to start with as this will eventually open up all the map as by doing this you'll find all the campsites. Once you've completed the main quest of setting up all your camps and such and driven the Venatori/Red Templars out of Suledin keep you should effectively have enough control of the area to switch focus to the smaller missions. EDL is a pretty linear map compared to the others in terms as really there is only 1 way. There is a way though just really try to remember wher eyou've been and try a different path if it lead to your death last time. That's kind of what I did and I eventually found a way through.

Here's a map that might help a bit. This is what I uncovered when all I did there was find what I needed for Cullen's nemesis quest.

Spoiler

The first camp to set up is west and slightly south of where you start. From there, go through the cave entrance between two of the watchtowers. The "x" next to the second camp site is in the caves, I think.

I agree it's easy to get turned around here and I've found myself going in circles a few times. :) The area is gorgeous, though, so if you can't figure out which way to go, get up on a cliff and look around.

yeah that's why I said just follow the main quest line as it pretty much guides you to where all the camps are once you've found them it's fairly easy to figuer out the rest.

I know :) but sometimes a visual aid works better than just text. Also, I've found myself running around those stupid caves past the first camp and unable to find my [way] out more times than I care to admit.

"follow the main quest" is confusing terminology. To me, the main quest is In Your Heart Shall Burn, From The Ashes, Wicked Eyes/Wicked Hearts, Here Lies The Abyss, etc., etc.

I know what you mean, but a beginner probably wouldn't.

How about: do the Timely Intervention quest. Or, clear all the camps, starting with Highgrove Camp.

To me whenever someone tells me follow the main quest I've always thought whatever the main quest in that area is. I consider the ones you mentioned as primary missions rather than main quests.
