This isn't a request, just something that was on my mind. Obviously in all three games, every race from every nation has the exact same hair selection (well... besides qunari, I guess) because resources. But in WoT the Avvar had dreadlocks iirc and in the same book it's mentioned that dwarves commonly sport beards. In DAO Leliana talks about the elaborate hairstyles the noblewomen wear in Orlais.

So, based on lore and your own headcanon, what hairdos do you suppose are more common among certain races/nationalities?

When Bhelen's pimping Rica in DAO, he says, "now look at her, braids down to here!" implying that long hair isn't a luxury most casteless women can afford, but now that she's mingling with the nobility... So I'm thinking long hair, fancy braids, fancy beards are popular among Orzammar's elite. That probably has less to do with dwarves and more to do with nobles, but I still like to think that elaborate braided styles are a dwarfy thing. Maybe a lot of casteless guys go beardless because the upkeep is more hassle than it's worth, since they're living in squalor and all.

Qunari usually have long hair in concept art, sometimes loose and sometimes braided. The Stenishok has a fancy braided.. beard.. thing? I'm not sure what you call that. But coupled with all the ropework all over their armor, I'm thinking braids are common.

I'm assuming a lot of Dalish elves keep it short (or in up-dos) for practical reasons, but then again I'm sure it's a pain to have to cut your hair regularly when you're, you know, fighting bears and crap in the wilderness.

The Avvar look great with dreads and I'm salty that they never appear in-game. WHY BIOWARE.

I figure Circle mages can bother being fancy and having totally impractical hair because they're not really expected to go anywhere and ruin it, soooo...

And I think the real question is which culture is more likely to wear all the bajillion undercuts in the CC? :P

Thoughts?

From what I've seen, Dalish elves tend to favour short hair.

This is actually a really good question.

Dwarves (particularly high-caste Orzammar and surface dwarves) I can see being partial to elaborate braids. While hardly universal, many male dwarves seem to like growing out their beards and scalp hair, and putting at least a few braids in both. Between Rica in DAO and Harding in DAI, it seems non-casteless/criminal female dwarves also have a slight penchant for growing out their hair, then tying it up in many tight braids that end in some kind of bun.

Casteless and Carta male dwarves seem to tend to like the clean-shaven or stubble, sometimes "bald criminal" look (Leske, Shady Corebit), and casteless women seem to go for short, loose, and disheveled hair (Kala, Nadezda, Jarvia, and Sigrun).

City Elves? I couldn't really tell ya. They might just mimic the hairstyles of lower class humans, maybe leaning toward ones that expose their ears.

Dalish elves? I always kind of assumed they favor hairstyles that keep it away from their eyes and ears, so they have full visual and auditory range as they survive the wild. Whether it's keeping it shaved or short so there is no long hair to get in their eyes and ears (like Merrill), or growing it long but tying back at least the hair around their forehead (like the DAO Dalish concept art), or tying the whole thing into ponytails or buns (like DA2 Marethari or the "Default" DAI Dalish Inquisitor.)

Humans: In general, Ferelden men seem to have shoulder-length hair with neatly trimmed facial hair. Free Marches seems to be Ferelden-lite. Orlesians? It's hard to tell under those many hats and masks, though thin little mustaches seem to be common, along with Antivan men. Women? Eh... hard to tell. Noble women from all nations definitely seem to wear their hair up in buns (Elinor Cousland, Anora, Celene, Josephine) with or without elaborate hair decorations. Common women seem to have it loose and disheveled, and warrior women (like Cassandra) seem to wear it shorter.

Qunari: Like you said, concept art tends to have them have their hair long and free-flowing, or long and loosely tied with long hair ribbons, or super short and tightly knotted cornrows or mercenary buns. (I'm guessing those from the Qunari culture tend to have long hair, while Tal-Vashoth mercenaries tend to keep it short because it's more practical for combat.)

Hmmm.  Now you're making me think....turns out I do have preferences, but my own personal ideas of what their hairdos should be, not necessarily lore based. Should I still share?

My male humans - they're always 'I'm so busy and important I don't have time for this' so it's practical with an effort to try and not let it be too girly.  Many of the guy hairdos are pretty girly imo.   And then 'I am also so busy and important I forgot to shave for 3 days'.  But that has more to do with me thinking stubble is sexy so yeah, there's that.

My female humans - easy, they're practical but pretty.  I never go for the super long modded curls or anything cause they're in combat, it seems silly to me.

Female Dalish Elves - now maybe this is influenced by other elves in fantasy games/movies but I like to mod in elaborate, braided, but slightly messy hair.  There are 2 for DA:O in a mod I have that I use for them.  Like they quickly braided it but it happens to look amazing.

Female Dwarves - Short, sassy, tom-boy, hard edged don't mess with me but by the way I look FAH-BU-LOUS hair.  So my warden was a modded bright red short cut, my Inquisitor is my avatar.  You know that side-cut, braided, combed over hipster hairdo in Inquisition?  I tried it on some of the races and it looked daft, especially human men.  But on my tattooed dwarf it was suddenly amazing.  I didn't tweak it once in the Emporium despite 120hrs of play time which is very rare for me.

Qunari - none of the female Qunari hair worked for me.  I'm stumped as to what they should have.  Should they all be bald like Bull?  The Viddasala has a super short mohawk with a strand of leather in it (I think that's what it was) which looked kinda good.

Male elves I've never played, and if I ever made a male dwarf he'd be Varric 2.0.   ^_^

Hawke is out of left-field really, if you compare the choices with Origins.  I tried with my 3 femHawkes to make them as visually different as I could.  So my goody two-shoes has blond braids tied in buns at the nape of her neck.  Very Little House on the Praire.

No nonsense Templar Hawke has Bethany's hair with a blunt cut fringe that seemed to emphasise her aggressive snarls.  The final one will have a short cut cause she's gonna be sarcastic and sassy.

I will say this though, I miss the medieval braided hair the guys had in Origins.  As soon as I saw Loghain I was like 'nooo, where are the plaits???'   I miss those, they were somehow fitting for the era.

I don't think many people really understood what you were asking here... That said, I think you actually covered most everything in your original post.

I don't recall that scene with Rica, but is she actually present when he says that? That would seem rather an odd choice if so, since there are no DAO CC styles where the hair is "down to" anywhere past the shoulder. But they could have gotten away with it if the actual NPC wasn't there.

I'll bet some of the altus in Tevinter can get some pretty elaborate styles going, even to rival Orlais. The nation has a reputation for decadence and excessiveness, as Orlais does, only of a different kind. Dorian has his personal style, true, but I think it can be an indication of the types of looks that might be popular there. For him, I do have a head-canon that he lets it grow long as a magister and has one of his servants put in some braids every morning.

And then there is the fun facial hair, like so...

This theory doesn't work for DAI as 3 different countries seem to share the same hairstyles but ignoring DAI the previous games give us some regional ideas to work with.

Ferelden likes little bunches and side braids.

Kirkwall/the Free Marches prefer a longer, looser style.

Dwarves universally take pride in their hair whether it's on the head, face or chest.

Headcanon wise I tend to think Dalish elves have either short hair that doesn't obstruct eyes and ears or it's long enough to be tied back and kept out of the way. They also have a unrivalled love for foliage crowns. Tevinter likes strong, dramatic make-up and the rich show their wealth with elaborate hair pieces and ornaments.  Antivans favour curls, the longer, the wilder the better. CE don't have distinct style, theirs is the same as the other commoners of the area.

^I thought Josephine's gorgeous hair was a lovely example of Antivan style.

Yeah, I'm thinking I didn't articulate myself very well.

She's present for that conversation. It works because she has the same hairstyle as Anora (that fancy braided double-bun thing), so theoretically if she were to let her hair down it looks like it would be pretty long.

And then there is the fun facial hair, like so...

This is spot-on, and I think it's all about practicality. If your hair is shorn you don't have to worry about lice and short hair is harder to get ahold of in a fight. I imagine when most casteless need a haircut, they pull a Sera and whack it off with a knife when it gets in their eyes.

City Elves? I couldn't really tell ya. They might just mimic the hairstyles of lower class humans, maybe leaning toward ones that expose their ears.

I think you may be onto something. Fenris and Sera have custom hairstyles that don't hide their ears, though I don't know if that's "their" intention or the devs are just reminding us they're elves.

Qunari: Like you said, concept art tends to have them have their hair long and free-flowing, or long and loosely tied with long hair ribbons, or super short and tightly knotted cornrows or mercenary buns. Oh, I forgot about those lovely hair ribbons! And they're usually bright red (IIRC), which certainly makes a statement against white hair. I wonder about that. One of those little bits of frivolity the Qun indulges, or is there some cultural significance?
