I am currently doing a Jacob-mance and it is horrible. (Actually, its so bad it is funny.) Who wrote this stuff?

Also, when do you get the line about the "prize?" Is that a paragon response? Because I have been going mostly neutral and renegade.

I haven't done it but I think it's the romance scene before the Omega 4 relay because he starts off talking about sneaking to the captain's quarters.

On a more serious note, holy crap, Jacob took off that super tight "armor" like a T-shirt.

That's hilarious. I like how male Shepard has clearly just ingested a large amount of mushrooms.

I think he speaks about "the prize" right after you travel trough the Omega-4 relay.
Anyway, if you plan to import this save into ME3 and play Citadel, there is some interesting dialogue waiting for you.

This thread is awesome :D

I'm prepared for the worst with Jacob's romance... ugh. Why am I even planning to do this? Oh, well, it'll probably still be a good laugh.

I've only watched Jacob's romance on YouTube because I'm not gonna touch that and I was surprised by how much content it has in comparison with the friendship path. If you don't romance him, you barely get to talk to him at all. It's so bad, though. I don't feel any chemistry between him and Shepard whatsoever, his behaviour seems very immature, and the whole romance is just... awkward. But... not good awkward. Shepard's writing is awful, too. Right from the start it feels like she doesn't think about anything else than jumping his bones and he seems rather unsure at first, and that kind of makes it feel like sexual harassment. The "priiize" line had me rolling, though. I still can't believe that happened.

The person who wrote it either didn't really care much for writing romances or has rather strange ideas about what makes women tick.

I just can't, and I don't think I ever will.  Lord knows I try and get in everyone's pants at some point, but not Jacob.  The way my femShep would walk up to him in the armoury, all sexy-fied, it made my toes curl.  Woman you're in love with Garrus, stop it!

Besides, giving up on you cause you're away for 6 months and getting jiggy with femHawke instead.  Oh no.  Hell no.  Screw that.

Why does it have to be the one black romance character that is the creepiest of the lot?  Sucks for anyone of colour playing the game who might have wanted to see a reflection of themselves in a romance.  At least Anderson is around, that guys got enough awesome for everyone.

If you're on PC, there's a mod to give Shepard a little more neutral delivery similar in nature to ME1's "Do you have a few minutes to talk, one-on-one?" that Shep gives to Ashley. (For the rest, you just have to do your best to avoid the flirty sounding dialogue options.) If you're not, then have my deepest sympathies. I hate how Shepard's kind of all over Jacob without my input. Whether she does that or not should be my choice in a game that allows me to choose romance for my character. It seems particularly dumb if you romanced somebody in ME1. Then it's as if Shepard completely forgot her previous relationship was even a thing... It's as if they really want you to romance him or spell it out for you that he is available or I don't know.

It's a damn shame with Jacob as a character. At the start of the game, he seems like a totally cool dude. When he was honest with Shepard about Cerberus, I thought, "I might hate Cerberus, but you're all right, man." He even has his moments throughout the game. But otherwise (especially unromanced) he barely talks to you so I feel like you barely get to know him (And getting to know a character is something I need in order to like it.), gets (hopefully just accidentally) a bunch of stupid stereotypes dumped on him throughout the franchise, etc. Seeing his train wreck of a romance going from ME2 to ME3 and how he handles it made me like him even less. It's sort of awful how he condemns his father for acting how he did, which I think was one of Jacob's big moments when you see he really cares about people and what's right, only for him to become a little bit like his father eventually. I'm glad I never get to see that part of him in my game. (He'd better take good care of Brynn and the kid, or aunt Shepard will have to do some ass-kicking, though.) Quite a waste since he had a lot of potential, in my opinion.

Yeah, Jacob had a lot of wasted potential.
I still completed his romance in ME2, because I didn't want to deprive my Femshep of a sexual encounter in ME2 (she only dated human males).

Honestly, I felt it when I flirt with everyone in ME2 before I reject them all. The flirt placement is strange, its all just Shepard coming into the room and wanting to jump on the other's bones.... but I like the way the way the resolution was handled in ME3... FemShep slapping Jacob was awesome tho.

Not really. I don't think anyone play games thinking that way or even offended by Jacob because he's black. But it was the matter of failure in the quality of his characterization and the writing. Bioware did improve themselves as they go; Isabella, Cortez, Traynor, Dorian and now Koth Vortena (Javik!). Honestly, it would be more interesting if Kai Leng was made romanceable. Male Asians are notoriously underpresented as romance option...

It never occurred to me that I want to see myself being represented in a game. I always like making beautiful/handsome custom characters and not once I care about their ethnicity until the recent call for diversity. It was always easier to make Caucasians avatars in any facial customizations (Sims, Dragon Age, Skyrim etc) without mods. There's a lot of suitable skintone, facial structure and even the most normal-looking noses.

I find its a joke trying to make a brown Southeast Asian who look like me but I did it anyway. The only thing that I can't change was her nose. You can't change the nose structure so I have to pick the nearest nose that was similar to mine. I wished I could adjust to make it slightly flatter but it give her a slight eurasian look which is better than nothing. Admittedly, she's a more gorgeous version of me and I always love watching her kick ass and romance a military hunk which of course never happen to me. So self-insertion is there but she's still Shepard regardless of her looks. (My Shepard is always a dark haired tanned Malay girl and I'm happy with it just as everyone who is happy with the red haired version or the Vanderloo Shepard)

Honestly, I wouldn't force any game developer to represent anyone just because for the sake of diversity. Characterization and writing always comes first and for most part most fictional characters are colorblind and culturally-neutral. This is what make so many movies, tv series, video games appealing internationally. Even for me, I would accept Tali as a representation of a muslim girl. Even the way people wanting to know what she look under her mask is very similar to the way most guys see girls who dressed modestly... that is really creepy.

Thank you for that.  My next femShep is gonna be gay, in a romance with Liara, so I'll try and install that mod because her getting flirty with Jacob would be super inappropriate.  As for the rest of your post, I agree with all of it.  Jacob has so much lost potential.   :)

No no no,  I didn't mean that.  I'm not offended that Jacob is black.  I meant that it's a shame that the only black romance in the game (right...right? I'm not missing anyone here am I?) is such a douchebag.  It's a shame is all.  Some ppl might have been all 'Yay!  Got myself a black guy....oh....oh god.....wait....he's a jerk.  Urgh.'

I don't like shoehorning in a particular stereotype just to please folks, it can feel very forced.  But I do like it when you see some diversity.  Mass Effect is set, what, 170 years in the future?  Damn right there should be lots of different shades going on.  I for one love Kasumi, when she appeared I thought 'you know, if I was a young Asian girl living in the US/Canada/Europe/Australia etc, then it might mean a lot to see someone like me in a western game.  Especially a girl as awesome as Kasumi is'.

I'm white, blond/brown hair and blue eyes, and I find myself absent mindedly making prettier versions of myself in character creators.  I for one believe that everyone should be able to do that in an RPG if they so desire, and not be blocked by a lack of colour shades or nose types.  If you want a reflection of yourself (in an RPG, not Bioshock or whatnot), you should be able to have it.

Saying that, I've always found it easier to make black Shepards in the CC.  They look SO much better than my white characters, something to do with the face mesh maybe?  So my last Shep was half black half white, and looked pretty handsome.  Yesterday I tried to make a good looking white male shep...2 hours in I gave up and clicked ShepLoo.

Normally, even if the romance option is there, sometimes I won't take it unless the story default itself to that. Like in Final Fantasy 7, Cloud always end up dating either Red XIII or Barret because I always ignore the girls. In Final Fantasy X-2, I'm really okay with not having the 100% and so Yuna never having reunion with Tidus. In Skyrim, I know the marriage option is there but I haven't married anyone because wearing a necklace and meeting some NPC to marry him... lol. In SWTOR, only two have companion romance and the rest are single or sleep around without attachments. In The Sims, romance is a chore.

I still think Bioware is quite significant in providing some quality romance writing. I would hate it if they merely exist to fit certain quota for the main character for players to 'bang'. I certainly don't want Bioware to go harem route again. BroShep certainly is more diverse in his collection of women...

I never got that scene.... because Ira Shepard refuses to talk to Jacob when she sees him at Huerta Memorial hospital. She just keeps right on walking by. He does not get invited to the Citadel party.

And I made the following video one time. (There are some obvious areas where I could improve it, but I did not feel like going back and updating it)

I think the reason they had Jacob do that was because he wasn't very popular as a romance option so they wanted to get rid of having to make romance content for him in ME3. I mean, that's what I've heard. If that's true, I don't know. That wouldn't make it any less unfortunate anyway.

I have to admit I rolled my eyes at that.  So the one LI that cheats on you in all of ME and DA put together (I just woke up, forgive me if I'm forgetting someone else) and has a baby with someone else is the black guy?  Seriously?  Stereotype much?

Hell there are plenty of white guys that do that, and girls, and probably blue ladies, slippery pink jellyfish and asthmatic little badger people too.  Come on Bioware, seriously.

Wow, if that really is the reason that just sucks. Especially since FemShep doesn't exactly have a lot of straight options anyway.
