The only change I am aware of is that Paragon Garrus returns to C-SEC and Renegade Garrus tries to or actually does become a Spectre. Like it or not, the reason it doesn't affect his character is that the events on Omega, particularly with Sidonus, define him far more than his time with Shepard. While you can dislike them overriding the influence Shepard had and offscreen character development is a bad way to go, they at least justified it with more detail than Liara.

The reason I hate the override is because I really love the confrontation with Dr. Saleon, particularly if you try to arrest him.

This is so important because Shepard is not just agreeing or disagreeing with Garrus. Shepard has just taught him something.

Good point about Sidonus, thank you.  I guess that is more defining for him, I just loved the relationship between the 2 in ME1 where Shep was showing Garrus a whole new way of dealing with the world.  He was your little pointy blue protégé.  I would've like more moulding of his character by Shep and your decisions...in a perfect world anyway.  But you're right, he's a very changed man after Omega.

Yeah, it's sad as it limits RP.  My last Shep didn't trust aliens but got over it by ME2.   Now I'm playing a super super racist Shep and all I can think to do is to give him a wake up call at the end of ME2.   Seeing how ppl say you can't be racist in ME3 I was thinking of Shep ignoring and hating the aliens in ME2 all the way through, even ignoring their upgrades as he doesn't trust them.  But then that will lead to

Spoiler

In the six month gap between games Shep will realise he was reason that that happened, and feel super guilty as he was close to that person.  That'll make him reluctantly work with the aliens in ME3 even tho he still doesn't like them, as he knows he needs to for the sake of humanity.

Meh....that's all I've got.  But if I could continue to be a racist humanity first jerk, I'd have gone with that instead.   :D

Maybe it makes sense.  Maybe after all they've been through in the first 2 games Shep would have to start giving aliens their due.  Maybe it would be daft to continue to feel superior to them.  Or maybe Bioware just wanted us to be nice guys this time.  Who knows *shrug*

I hear you :) My first FemShep I played was a colonist and she didn't trust aliens. That was a lot of fun in ME1, and to an extent in ME2, but it's hard to be anti-alien for long, because even if I was mean to them in ME1, they gave really likable answers to that, haha.

I like your approach for ME2, sounds great.

By ME3, they took away this option, but I'm actually fine with it, because by then, like you said, Shepard has been stuck with the same aliens for some time now and knows he/she can depend on them whether the trust is there or not (the friendship thing seems a bit forced, but on the other hand I can see why it's there; I think a lot of people just want their squad mates to be Shepard's best friends (yes, I do, too :P) and I would think the majority of people would not even consider playing a racist).

Plus they're really in a situation where every help is needed. I found it awesome when my Shep also got over her issues with the batarians and asked for their help against the Reapers, that was such a cool moment.

It's like Ash in ME1, she understands that if it takes working with aliens to achieve something, she'll do it without hesitation, despite being suspicious of them.

What makes no sense is of course if for example Garrus is never recruited in ME1/2 and suddenly acts like Shepard's best bud. One can hope for the future if they ever make a trilogy again this will be taken into account :)

I've just started but it's already fun.  He's been on the Normandy for all of 5 minutes and is already totally over it and sick of everyone.

The thing that sucks about my Jerk Shep is he just felt out of place in ME3... and he only made friends with Javik. Who was equally lonely and miserable. And what few cheerful moments I got with Jack or Grunt lasted but a few moments.

On the other hand, parts of it fit the story. Like when Joker says how bad you look.

I found that funny about ME1 Shep.. he/she was touchy about their private info for some reason. It's a weird quirk, but I liked it. Barla Von, Liara, Shi'ara, the dude from the Earthborn origin.

I've played Earthborn/SpacerSheps and didn't feel like RP-ing Shep being touchy about personal history until I start playing ColonistShep. I remember thinking, why everyone talk about my past for me. For a ColonistShep, it felt everyone are being awfully nosy and it was really invasive when you hear people talk about your bad childhood for you. Like, oh, someone is gushing that they knew all about you and what you suffer just from reading your mind and your facebook page  <_< you're supposed to react kindly to that...?

The only one that didn't feel off was when I pair my ColonistShep with Kaidan. He did talk about her past like he already knew about it and unlike Jenkins, Liara, Miranda etc, he didn't shove it to her face and take her past for granted or used it to show how small and significant they are in contrast. He was careful about it and kept inserting compliments about her strength in character and how he admire that in her. I like that it took more effort on his side to feel empathy for her and that he understand her more than I do as a player. Which is really weird but I'm totally okay with it.

I can only do a renegade-pragmatic Shepard rather than a complete renegade-jerk Shepard. It didn't feel like it change anything since everyone ended up behaving the same way to you. Which contrasted to when I became a complete psycho jerk in SWTOR. Like that time when I purposely betrayed a Major who tried to use me to save his son and since the guy and I are both Sith, naturally we tried killed each other as soon as I free him and I won. His father flipped and I killed him and gave his job to his crafty subordinate. Or that one time when a military officer want me to kill his wife because he want to keep his job and then I betrayed him to another officer who wanted that guy's job. Or that time when someone gave me information to help my cause and begging me to not kill them but I kill them anyway because I don't leave loose ends. That was when being a complete evil manipulative b*tch became really fun.

I can see that working better with Colonist. There's more clear trauma. I just think my Earthborn wanted to hide things or present a better image. I've kind of built this whole backstory where he happened to catch Anderson's eye and it was only because of him that he joined the Alliance.

I had a feeling that may happen with Garrus, so even tho this Shep is gonna dislike him (which will break my heart lol) I recruited him anyway so his character makes more sense in ME3.  I hope he won't be buddy buddy with me if I'm always mean to him tho.

I thiiiink there is the buddy buddy status, but then I was already nicer to Garrus in ME2 (oh, btw, when they see each other in Garrus's recruitment mission, that's already a buddy buddy moment too! Shepard looks ecstatic to see Garrus again...).

Haha, I'm the same! Before I played this FemShep I couldn't bring myself to be mean to someone or to kill off someone (well I lost Kasumi my first time I went through the Collector Base, but that was fine for me as that wasn't planned or anything).

With her I tried to stick to her characteristics/mindset a lot though and killed of loads of people who seemed dangerous to her. It was hard sometimes, but I forced myself to do it and I ended up loving it. So much that she became my canon Shep which I would've never thought, but it was just really great and rewarding.

I also used to say I couldn't leave behind Kaidan on Virmire, which I just did in my current playthrough. It's worth it to see different content. I'm so glad I tried out these things, even if some are absolutely sad and stomach-twisting, it was good to see different scenes and outcomes. I continue to do that, leaving behind certain characters to experience different things in my playthroughs. Never gets boring :)

Continue to have fun, it sounds like a good time, ha :D

Small world!  It was the same for me.  My first ever foray in to being anything other than nice was my first ME run.  I decided to try and be more assertive, and having Jen Hale voice femShep makes that really fun.  So I went for rene-gon.  Nice to aliens and a good guy, but hated politicians, had a short fuse and was willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.  It's so much easier to push someone through a window than arrest them, you save on the paperwork.  :D

It was honestly inspiring, I loved being much more assertive and confident than I am irl.  It set me off on a journey of playing all sorts of characters.  Coupled with Bioware's different choices written through the games and I started dreaming up lots of different Wardens/Hawkes/Sheps.  Now I find it way more fun to be them than to be me.  In fact the one DA:O world that I don't plan to take in to DAI is the first where I played as myself.  Apparently I'm nowhere near as interesting as the new characters I rpg-ed.

I've saved Kaidan twice, now it's Ash's turn.  First time I'm gonna save her cause I wanna bang, okay?  But on my next Shep...well she'll prefer Kaidan but will have sent Ash with the Salarians.  She'll be such a bleeding heart paragon that she can't bear to let them die so has to reluctantly go help them, with Kaidan dying in the process.  I'll then play the rest of game hating Ash for surviving and being super mean to her.  Is it bad that I'm looking forward to seeing how that works out?

Now I'm addicted to there being a cost and no world ever being perfect.   Only 1 out of my 4 Sheps leaves the SM with every squad member alive.  The pay off is that the whole crew dies, including Dr.Chakwas, which breaks her heart as they were super close.  But I like the idea that the victims you lose along the way are sitting on your shoulders weighing you down, but also pushing you on, to the end.  And I wanna see what happens when each individual person dies.  Except Garrus.  He ain't ever dying cause I heard that it makes no damn difference.  In that case I won't bother, I don't want to know that he's just decorative and not actually a crucial part of the plot in ME3.   <_<

Yeah, I thought it was too easy to get everyone out alive from the suicide mission, other than the "hold the line" segment having that weird formula. Your "there must be a cost" plan isn't a bad idea because you get to see the alternate characters in ME3, though only Padok Wiks, Mordin's stand-in, is anything special. Getting the Geth VI instead of Legion changes how the confrontation on Rannoch goes too.  However, to your point about the deaths weighing on Shepard, the dreams contain the whispered lines of fallen teammates.

I liked Legion's VI, everytime Shep tried to connect with him about old times he'd say 'I am not Legion' and I swear Shep looked sad.  It was like Legion had amnesia, everyone tried to connect to him and he knew he'd been there on the Normandy, but couldn't remember anyone or anything.  I kinda liked that..in a melancholy way.

I didn't know that about the dreams.  I really hate those lol, I sat there willing Shep to run faster ffs so I can skip this!  Next time I'll listen closer....

Well that's a better way to look at it than just Shepard being dense lol. I do wonder why the VI has a hole in it's chest though. I mean other than lazy programming.

You're right that the dreams are awful sequences to play through, but the quotes at least make them a bit eerie and haunting rather than just a pain in the ass.

It was a really great idea but it sucks that it's in a section everyone hates. Seeing that kid is worse after seeing the Catalyst take his form and nobody likes slow down sections. If you could move at full speed or if they were just cutscenes, I think they might get hated less.

I got so sick of it that I set the game's speed to three times faster through the console just to breeze through it last time I played. Normally I feel indifferent towards children. That kid I hate. I didn't care much when I played the first time. We've seen so many people die and I sure as hell cared more about the Virmire Survivor (WHO I KNEW) getting hurt than some random kid back on Earth. After seeing the Catalyst, my indifference turned to full-on hate. Not even the voices of dead friends make up for that despite it being such a nice idea. Funnily enough, I, personally, don't mind the speed as much as I simply hate the brat that's supposed to emotionally manipulate me into caring by simply being a kid.

But... maybe Shepard was so stressed out about it because it was the single child on the entire planet...

Ooh I wish I could speed it up, don't think you can on pc.   Maybe I should train my niece to do that section while I go get a cup of tea.

Anyway isn't that the point or did I get it wrong?  I might've got it wrong....

I interpreted it as the intelligence trying to get into Shep's head by using an ickle kid that he happened to see die.  Somehow it knew Shep felt bad about the kid so used it to manipulate him....which just made me mad and I dug my heels in.  Were we supposed to feel sorry for the kid?  Or, like me, are we supposed to be mad that we're being manipulated in such an obvious way?

I dunno.  I was like 'nope. NOPE.  What's next?  You gonna be a puppy?  Won't work, nuh-uh'.

You know, I would be even more emotionally invested if the starchild turned out to be mini version of the ones you left on Virmire. The boy would look more like Mini-Kaidan with dark curls or a little girl who look like a mini-Ashley (dunno why they can't use the little sunflower girl from the trailer). Kinda wasted.

But I head canon-ed the nightmare boy was Shepard's deepest desire to save her future in the form a phantom son. And that Harbinger pick up that desire and try to fool her into choosing the future it wanted. Like, daring to kill the little dream boy or save him.

I think these things are up to your headcanon. I cannot say what the truth is. Maybe they actually want us to speculate. I've always seen it as a cheap move to make me care. I think that what they tried to express, though, was that Shepard might be showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder which I've seen people theorise about here, as well. Other people said the child represents Earth or life on Earth that Shepard feels she abandoned or couldn't save. Fans of the Indoctrination Theory see the child as a sign of Shepard's gradual indoctrination. I think the important thing is that your theory is as valid as others'. I don't think we have been given a clear answer. So believe in what works for you.

And, you can speed it up on PC, actually. :) I don't know about consoles, but those are less likely. You just need to enable the in-game console which basically just consists of dropping some files into your Mass Effect 3\Binaries\Win32 folder, and then, in the game, you use the tilde key (~) to enter the console and use the "slomo" command. For example, "slomo 2" (for 200% speed), "slomo 3" (for 300% speed), "slomo 0.5" (for 50% speed), etc.

The idea with the niece is much cuter, though.  Or maybe evil, I can't decide.

Thanks for the reply.  I've only recently got into Mass Effect so I'm new to forums and didn't know what the consensus was on the kid.

Nice info about speeding up the game, cheers for that.

As for my niece, sadly my super evil plans to train her as my personal slave really haven't worked out very well.  For some reason she prefers dancing, singing and putting on make-up to being my minion.  Go figure.   ;)

I don't mind the kid myself. I can still roleplay it with my Earthborn thug. He grew up in a much worse situation than that kid probably, but he still has a heart. Maybe he wants better for other kids.

My gripes almost always revolve around them trashing ME2. That's the main thing I hate about ME3. As a self-contained game, I guess it's not so bad. But it's not a self contained game.

Do you mean ignoring most of the crew you'd built up and sweeping Cerberus aside even if your Shep liked them?  If so then yeah, I get that.  Tho personally I like the fact that ME3 looked back to ME1 more than ME2, but I can understand your point of view.   It's a slap in the face for those who loved 2 more than 1 I guess.

They could have started out with a section where you could role-play that you were grateful to Cerberus for fighting the collectors.  That you felt some loyalty to them, then when you met TIM you realised he was a lost cause and you'd have to work with the alliance even if you didn't like them anymore.  That would have helped.  I can't understand why a renegade Shep isn't kicking and screaming at being locked up for 6 months 'because bureaucracy' but by the way the world is ending!  I'd like to be super annoyed at the alliance with at least one of my Shepards.
