I think I will set difficulty to normal for now and see how that goes.

As far as I know Wynne is at the Circle so I will go there before Redcliffe.

Still dithering in the human origins area; getting my character settled and familiarizing with the UI.

I got the Pretty Faces mod because I wasnt getting anything I wanted out of the vanilla presets. It's not ideal, but better.

Today I was playing a bit and started reloading from before conversations to try out all the options. It was interesting to hear the various changes in the dialogues depending on what answers I gave; but I realized it wont work that way; I wont get anywhere in the game if I do that all the way through.

Does anyone else find themselves doing that?

I would set difficulty to casual if you're doing it as a RP exercise, but that's just me.

And YES, I definitely did that a lot for my canon playthrough, particularly if the option I picked resulted in a response I didn't like or my character informed me in no uncertain terms that he would never have said that.

I fully agree causal  is the best first time setting.. Even on causal you can get your derriere handed to you on a silver platter since one is just learning the game and not really knowing what they are doing as far as character builds and want equipment to use.

My rule of thumb is everybody gets the best armor and best weapons for their level.

I am a new-ish player to DA:Origins. Played a little a few years back; got to Redcliffe I think.

Anyway I have the ultimate edition and am about to begin over.

I want to play it as an RPG; meaning I want to play it for the story and lore etc; so I want a character build that will be good for that. A lot of the posts and guides dealing with builds are very focused on power building for maximum damage; which is not what I want. I want some info on maximizing RPG not DPS

So any advice or links welcomed

Thanks

If you want a good role-play (conversation) experience, you might like playing a Rogue and maxing out your Coercion (conversation skill) early one. Some rogues also get an extra point in Coercion to start with, and rogues as a class have high Cunning, which is needed to raise your Coercion. (In other words, the higher Cunning you have, the higher your Coercion will be.) So you can make some good persuasion checks early on that add flavor to your conversations.

If you don't mind me saying so, the City Elf is a good character to roleplay a rogue with good conversation skills. Growing up in an impoverished inner-city slum adds the in-universe reason for being a rogue, it starts off with an extra point in Coercion (probably because you've had to talk your way out of trouble with human guards in the past), and later in the game you'll find a pleasant amount of story significance to playing a city elf. (Human Noble fans will tell you that ONLY their human noble has central story significance, but it's not true.)

I'd also play the game on "Easy" (I know it's an ego-killer, but trust me) because this game was designed to be hard. It was designed with "tactics" playstyles in mind, which means that unless you enjoy difficult combat to begin with, it can be surprisingly hard. You'll have to dedicate a lot of time to figuring out how to build your character and companions properly so you don't die every two steps, which can be time-consuming. Easy allows you to just make a decent build, then grab and go.
