Heya Guys,

This topic has probably been discussed before, but I was just curious about your opinions. Some games, and I won't explicitly mention them to avoid Bioware vs. Rest debates, use language which is considered more mature (aka swearing). I personally tend to swear a lot when I'm frustrated, so am glad if I see my character express his/her frustrations in a similar manner. For instance a more renegade type of character would, in my humble opinion of course, be more likely to swear than a paragon character who would probably opt for more diplomatic language. However especially in the stressful situations we're bound to end up in, I can imagine my character yelling out an insult or two.

I'm not necessarily arguing that Bioware is severely lacking in the mature language department, but I couldn't help but feel a great sense of joy when my Inquisitor asked whether 'things could stay (profanity removed, free warning point received) fixed for one second', which I didn't have that often in Bioware games.

What do you guys think? Does swearing equal more mature language? Or should it be avoided?

Not my top priority as role-playing concepts go. But I also don't exactly mind when my PC has the option to drop an F-bomb.

We actually had a thread a couple months back (occasionally getting necro'd) which discussed what role swearing should play in Bioware games.

There should be some adult language. It is after all language that we all hear in everyday life. Sometimes it can also add more color to dialogue or better emphasize the character's emotional state than more tame words that convey the same meaning.

That said it also shouldn't be over-used. Just like with nudity or portrayals of violence or gore or other mature content, it should never be gratuitous.

I'm fine with swearing, so long as it's not 8 F-bombs, 4 mofos, or the like in one sentence or phrase.

If it makes sense as part of someone's personality, then by all means swearing should be included.

In principle, I'm against the sanitation of video games of everything that might not be completely politically correct.

No swearing. Utopistic, but ok.

Excessive swearing. Childish material.

I'd agree on the excessive swearing, but would you by definition disagree with any character you met in the ME universe that swears? For characters like Zaeed for example, it seems only natural to drop a couple of politically incorrect terms from time to time.

If the character is part of the military, there should be swearing.

But this is the "frontier" so there should be swearing regardless.....

Wow someone really gets pumped about the use of profane language. Although, it would be more realistic to have military men and woman using profanity, but it has to be natural, not forced. Otherwise, it would feel like elementary school on the playground.

Or Aria.

Imagine if instead she had said Omega's number one rule was, "Don't mess with Aria."

Sure, it conveys the same meaning...but it has much less impact and seems less threatening because it uses polite language. If you're trying to adopt a threatening tone, as Aria was with that line, you're going to better convey it by using language that ignores social mores.

Swearing doesn't bother me and Mass Effect has used it appropriately.

I thought BioWare did pretty well on this front. They had harsh language, but not excessive as to take away from the whole space opera tone.

Yeah, that's my only complaint. Even my Earthborn Shep was kind of plain. Or maybe Shep just isn't emotive in general.

In most cases, it's used in such a childish way that it's annoying. Would be cool if BW finds a way to make it believable.

HBO Series: Deadwood

Commander Shepard didn't emote because he/she was a schizoid brick in ME1 and ME2. In ME3 Walters tried to give Shepard some emotion and suddenly some people complained because they lost "their Shepard." Aside from the dream sequences I thought it was much better.

Am still opposed to it, and hope for less of it in future titles.

I like it (I guess because I do swear a lot in real life too)! It shouldn't be all the time of course, but some neat little words sprinkled here and there and I'm game. I love James and Jack for that :D

That is why the "defeat arc" at the Asari homeworld in me3 is one my favorite arcs in the series.Because Shepard finally shows an emotion and not just the standard  stoic stuff.
