Four stars. That's some brutal use of language right there.
Oh, yes. We are savages.

I'd rather they didn't use swearing at all.
There are at least 100,000 words in the English language that are adjectives.
If a person can't be bothered to use more than 6, then they're too stupid for anything else.
No offense, but if this is the quality of the arguments against swearing, you wouldn't rank too high on the intelligence scale yourself by your own standard.
After all, there are at least 100,000 words in the English language that are adjectives, why bother using a word like stupid?
Swearing is good

Swearing puts a little hair on your chest
It should at least follow the rules of lore in the game itself.

It's worth noting that while accurate, this can hardly have the final say. I can think of several biological functions and anatomical features that aren't even covered there, and they still need words.
And since we have perfectly good words for them, why not use them?

Because it seems anachronistic? Because the word is human only? Because the word has already been filled by the lore? Etc.
In any event, prefer not to have profanity, as per the topic.
If you're concerned with anachronisms in Dragon Age... you have a lot more than the rare bit of cussin' to worry about.
Besides, a lot of those great words have a very long and storied history. They're certainly period appropriate to whatever period the games are invoking.
This doesn't apply to Mass Effect, in any case, because they obviously have all those great words, and probably some new ones. Although the new ones won't pose a problem, I suppose.
Swearing puts a little hair on your chest
A little hair. Singular.
That poor lonely thing. *chuckles*
Americans have also been disagreeing with Elhanan on this and similar topics.
Too many times I have seen this argument in the past. Maybe it's just the redneck culture I'm spawned from. And that in and of itself is American. If you go around all day and whenever you hear a disagreement even, say to yourself "'Cause, 'Merica!" and see how many arguments you would have won, it's honest to god frightening.

While I may have used the wrong term wanting to mean out of time/ place, a long and storied history certainly does not fit into a fictional period (eg; DA series).
Sure it does. These words and concepts were concurrent with plenty of words and concepts that feature in DA. There's certainly no reason for them not to be there.
And having modern profanity appear in an on-going series can appear to break immersion.
Like I said, they're anything but modern. Most of the good ones were well known to Chaucer.
And again, Mass Effect will prominently feature modern humans whose society and culture very much ascends from our current society and culture. So those words certainly shouldn't break immersion there.

Well, the F-word--at least--is much older than a lot of people think.

See? This is what swearing does! It reduces otherwise intelligent conversation between two otherwise rational human beings into an altercation of vernacular instead of maintaining a demeanor of understanding between the two parties.
Furthermore, you are so focused on the minutiae that you forget the intent and purpose behind said observation on the effect of such foul language.
In case that is lost on you, let me dumb it down:
Taking an honest request to be civil and trying to make into an insult is BAD.
Bad things are no-no's.
Hopefully you understand now.
I like the f-word. Its my favorite.
I like the f-word. Its my favorite.
It has so many different applications!
Because using a word such as stupid is to the point. It actualizes someone as being smarter than someone else. And that, at least in our culture, is a no-no.
If, for example, I said that someone else was an excrement filled piece of dung (for the mods), you all would know what I saying, just using more words and being less to the point.

Now you are trying too hard.
But I´m with you on the civil part.

o.o
Well considering English's germanic roots this is probably true.

Nah swearing didn't do that. you did, by being such a self righteous and condescending sort of fellow.

Yes, swearing certainly is the most artless way to insult somebody or something.
(Though there are exceptions. There are some who mastered swearing and turned it into an art form...)

Oh, On this I will agree wholeheartedly, Seriously I'd like this twice if I could.
Swearing to me is a very low brow form of insulting someone, especially when you yourself are trying to present yourself as intelligent.
o.o a perfect example of this-you can obviously tell his disdain for the given party, his outright mockery of them as a people, his own view of his being inherently better. But instead of calling them crass names as you would find from a teenager or a normal exchange, he acts the part of a superior person. Demeaning their intelligence, worth as people, their humanity.
That's the difference between the average person and a politician.
o.o Or a good one anyway.
