Well, the F-word--at least--is much older than a lot of people think.

Not to mention the c-word, I think is even older. But man I am glad that word doesn't appear in game, that would be going slightly too far, I think.

While possibly true, it is not part of the phraseology in DAO or DA2; simply appears in DAI, I believe. Dwarves utilized another term, and that is part of the lore. Also, Chaucer did not author the DA series.

There is something to be said for Pardon My Kingon   :D

Certainly there is.

But that doesn't work universally, is all.

The particular Dwarf PC in Inquisition is a surface dwarf, so cultural integration is a more than reasonable possibility. Protagonists from all potential background have actually spent plenty enough time in human company to adopt a verbal habit or two.

Furthermore, the specific source you're citing is a letter of instruction from one person to another, but it never refers to itself as a comprehensive text of Thedasian swears. It's a quick rundown, not a swear dictionary.

Not that I'm rooting for you to return to the task of continuously reiterating how much you prefer to avoid swearing in media, but turning your attention to how it's out of place in the lore isn't going to work. Point the first, it isn't out of place. Point the second, the world is deliberately anachronistic to begin with. Even if they were using "modern" swears, that would just be continuing the tradition.

True, my personal issue with the c-word is not related to it's vulgarity.

See?  This is what swearing does!  It reduces otherwise intelligent conversation between two otherwise rational human beings into an altercation of vernacular instead of maintaining a demeanor of understanding between the two parties.

Furthermore, you are so focused on the minutiae that you forget the intent and purpose behind said observation on the effect of such foul language.

In case that is lost on you, let me dumb it down:

Taking an honest request to be civil and trying to make into an insult is BAD.
Bad things are no-no's.
Hopefully you understand now.

Do you realize that being civil entails not being a condescending prig? Just wondering.

What do I think about swearing?

I think it's weird how BW is willing to get up-front with language in a game, yet not allow posters to swear on their forums.

Odd that you don't respond to the initial attack.

Or does saying I don't mean to be rude actually absolve people of them following up with outright insults.

I think it's because the age requirements are different.

I just didn't like the tone, besides I wasn't who the post was directed at. They can fight their own battles.

Its actually the same on most forums. Bethesda has many M rated games, Fallout in particular. But the forum is for 13 and up and therefore it is not allowed to swear.

Then I think it's weird how the age requirements for a forum are somehow lower than the 'M' rated games geared towards people who are mature enough to understand the concepts and content presented in said games.

There are a lot of things about the BSN that are weird.

You have to be a certain age to have an account, but anyone can view the forums.

I assume they're taking precautions for the sake of the more youthful forum observers.

Priorities, right? Seems kind of skewed.

I think it's more to stop abusive behavior. Granted, not all forums can be as free as the Vroom Vroom forum.

Still, I think it's a double standard. But where would BioWare be without their double standards?

In my experience it would make more sense to take precautions for the sake of me (30 years old) than for the sake of the more youthful forum observers.

There are kids out there that put my own evilness, pettyness, swearing and more to the blush.

And yet note the complete omission of the term in the first two games, expansions, and DLC. That is again omitted in the lore that does appear seems to support the extant euphemism; not the modern utterance. And I am unaware of Varric ever using the bomb.

Prefer not to include it.

Perhaps I read different tone into each post, but the original post seems to be poking fun at a fragile argument, whereas the post I responded to simply sounded patronizing.
