Leaving home, I took about 2,400 sci-fi paperbacks with me (many, many 2nd hand at 35 cents). Ben Bova was in there, somewhere. :P  Haven't stopped reading.

Interesting enough, I don't recall sci-fi literature from Jules Verne to the 70s,  containing F-Bombs. I'm saying, in a roundabout way, that  a good story can be F-Bombless and so can ME:A if the writers are any good. Besides, the game is targeted at teenagers as well and what kind of example is writing a game with F-Bombs in it?

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the setting an example for teens argument. It doesn't help that this is a game series that allows for the possibility of genocide as a morally justifiable action.

And again, the conversation wanders from swearing to violence.

Profanity is not required, and would likely not be missed, IMO.

I would miss it, for one. Its absence would remove or irreparably change some of my favorite characters and moments in both series.

It's removal from past games is separate from not having it included from future ones. May not miss what was experience for the first time.

Nope.

Can you please tell us why you can't suffer a single instance of "profanity" to pass over your ears?

Because it is of no value; does not build, but meant to hurt, ruin, and destroy. Others may have stated this better than myself:

<<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>>

Hm..
Let's say that I had the wonder of working with an individual whose every 3rd or 4th word was a truly expletive-deleted one. So, you couldn't have a conversation or have the person in a meeting, regardless of the brilliant mind behind the gutter mouth. So, yes, this wonderful gem diminished itself in front of me with the unfortunate result that the brilliant mind became a lonely one.

Now, the occasional utterance at the right moment can add an effect suitable to the occasion which frankly I don't really mind but outside "the proper moment" I do. For example: Free speech does not permit hate speech nor would anyone want to hear a gutter mouth use profanity in front of small children... for the simple reason it's wrong and totally unnecessary.

BTW, does anyone here believe that a lack of profanity will reduce game sales? Conversely, will profanity increase game sales? Finally, does the exclusion or inclusion affect your perception (positive or negative) of a Mass Effect game? In other words, will you miss the profanity if it's not there?

If Sartoz and myself agree on this, it must be so.... ^_^

And which is completely relevant if we're going to go for the "think of the children" defense. If you want to play that card, you're going to be hit with issues far larger than F-bombs.

To hear the cursed words is to be like being strung up and burned with a thousand stakes.

If Sartoz and you agree, it means the two of you agree, and there are still a whole lot more than two people hanging out here disagreeing with the both of you.

Regardless of that though, how can you concretely assert that that same value judgement is true for everyone else? Apparently you can't.

And the toggle you're so enamored with just blocks out the single offending word. The context surrounding the word, and the emotions and sentiments behind the word are completely intact. If you take issue with things that hurt, ruin, or destroy, then that position makes no sense to me. You're hung up simply on the words themselves.

^This is why I don't buy into the "it's unrealistic" defense. Even if the characters swear using their own in-universe language, that still serves as an endorsement for the concept of swearing.

And if they add a Toggle, the ones that use it would possibly be affected; not those hearing the profane version. But I have confidence in Bioware that they would not simply emplace such a poor mechanic that would hurt their stories.

There has yet to be a Mass Effect without the mature language tag yet so...

It's likely going to be included, like I am 99.99% sure of it.

So its not so much what I personally think of swearing, but what Bioware thinks of using it, and they're fairly fond of it.

On this we agree.

I'm equally confident that they won't egregiously self-censor when writing their stories or crafting their scenarios because a single forumite is unwilling to plug his ears when a rare bit of cussin' drops. So there's that to be thankful for as well.

My father once told me: "People can say the sh*ttiest things in the kindest language." If you only take words on their face value, then obviously swears would make baby Jesus cry, but people can say some really screwed up crap without using any words that are inflammatory in and of themselves.

Or perhaps they choose to try something that aids a certain demo of their Players like this toggle. There is hope....

So, when I say "Oh damn, **** me" when I spill hot coffee on myself because I'm a klutz who can't walk and carry hot beverages, anyways, that's meant to "hurt, ruin, or destroy"?

I'm pretty sure it's just expressing a negative situation. Are we only meant to express ourselves if the words are of peace or joy then?

Or perhaps the certain demo can just roll with it, as they have been. There's ample opportunity to self-censor much of the content, as you well know, considering you bench offending characters and refrain from completing the romance subplots. Taking those measures into consideration, what actually makes it through is trivial. In fact, if we're talking about the " F bomb" - I think you can completely eliminate its presence from DAI if you skip Dorian, Bull and Blackwall. And I'm in favor of the ability to take those measures being strengthened and supported, if anything. It would be better for RP overall to have more options.

I would ask you again - why can't you just ignore the presence of content that you, personally, find objectionable? You're not an impressionable child, and I don't get the impression that you're playing the game around children (which, if that's the case, is easily remedied). What is it about the words themselves that you can't just say "hey, that's something I'd never say or do?" or just get up and make yourself a cup of tea while an offending cutscene plays out?

Not only that, people can swear when they're intensely happy.

It may when it covers more than a decade.

And yet, it didn't. We have never been offered, anything ever, that qualifies as a comprehensive list of Thedasian swears. We have also not witnessed a span of ten years into Thedasian culture, we have witnessed relatively brief snippets within that span.

Because it is of no value; does not build, but meant to hurt, ruin, and destroy.

It is of immense value when it comes to characterization. Ideally, different characters should have different styles of communication. We learn something about a character depending what kind of language they use.

As for the last, that is an egregiously broad assumption.

Oh for loving me gently's sake.

Don't you think you are exagerating?

I mean sure, if you are deliberately choosing words to hurt others, sure. And even then, this is just a game and it may fit the character's personality.

On the other hand, if I say some "profanities" because I stubbed my loved gently tumb on a loving gently couch, that is meant to "hurt, ruin and destroy"?

He says I might not miss what I experience the first time, but I know what I like. The mere suggestion that I might be deprived of potential Zaeeds or Blackwalls makes me fumy.

Hells yes, I do that all the time too, but the coffee example happens at least once a week, so it's more prevalent in my life. :P

I can relate though I mostly laugh. I guess I'm not someone who hates, ruins and destroys.
