Frell, frak, bosh'tet, sod, are all fake curse words that get their point across. And this is a pretty common practice that's been going on for quite a while (anyone here recall "fewets"?)
What do you guys think about swearing?

Possibly. In which case, he should have chosen another opportunity to do so than in response to a post where I illustrated why I consider course language (explicitly referencing the inclusion of fictional course language) a valuable characterization tool.

A rather vulgar one, in fact.

I'm just asking questions to see where his head space is at. I could do a lot of things, but the instinctual reaction for me is going to be cussing. Mostly I'm not making an argument here, just curious to see his response to hypotheticals.
I can recall a instance where I was shot and I did swear a little bit, I mean it was a piece of scalding hot metal sliding through my body quicker then I could scream. The rig hadn't caught it and rather then just taking a round center mass and it doing nothing but winding me or possibly bruising me a bit...instead it hit the cloth overlay, nothing but a bit of synthetic fiber and cotton to slow that sucker down before it hit shoulder.
It hurt, more then I can articulate to have that thing come out the other side of me...I mean if you have never had a round pass through you, you cannot not understand the sheer sensation of having flesh there one instance, and then a bloody gaping hole the next.
I like to consider myself a strong man, a tough man...I about fell to my knees in pain, I bit my lip so hard it burst and did practically everything I was taught to just stay conscious from this rolling sensation of numbness, and then blinding pain. Thankfully I was not alone and was able to be treated in field a little bit, so by the time I actually got to a operational hospital I was already doped out of my skull.
People **** on the medics still using morphine but I got to say...you get shot and see if you don't want that.

Which makes sense, of course. But there are plenty of other real world words and concepts that they adopt readily enough - so I don't see how it's necessarily a stretch.

^ I can't speak for him but I have the same reaction to melee as a primary attack form, or breather masks and cat suits. Rule of cool crowd asks why can't you just ignore it or not use it. My answer is it inclusion makes the game worse for me it breaks immersion in its implausibility. While implausible isn't something I'd describe swearing as there are plenty of things that can wreck a game for you and just ignore it isn't a great option.

That's fair, but I would say "walking around in a vacuum wearing with a bikini" (or farting around with a samurai sword while on the business end of a railgun) stretches credibility somewhat further than "a sailor talking like a sailor." Different levels.

In games, I prefer expressions of the setting like 'Maker's Breath', 'Bosh'tet', and 'By the Stone'; seems more immersive, and far less offensive to me personally as the Player.

ME2 had a great balance, Jack mostly notwithstanding. Though it made sense for a young career criminal with no proper upbringing to drop f-bombs. I'd like for Ryder to get at least one in Andromeda. I always thought it was cool when Shepard cursed.
Agreed, especially in ME2 when you meet the Blue Suns commander on Omega and have Zaeed with you.
"You know this *******, Zaeed?"

same with nudity:
Don't be a 13 year old who just discovered swear words. It's not necessary in order to convey realism. But if you're going to include it, do so sparingly and not just to give the game what a 13 year old may consider "mature dialogue".

I get that some people curse when in pain; watching my ex give birth may have been the closest I have seen to demon possession. But I do not embrace it, and find it unattractive and unwanted; prefer other methods of expression.

Which is fine - this overarching concern is not an unreasonable one, but if you're already given (and are likely to continue to be given) the tools and opportunity to remove the majority of such content from your experience, is it really justifiable to ask that they remove it entirely, when many other players (their reasons being their own) enjoy it? You advocate the toggle as a compromise, but mostly, you seem to prefer it gone altogether, which puts you at odds with... a lot of people here. Wouldn't the more reasonable approach be to just continue as you have done in the past, gaming around the content you find distasteful (and just soldiering through the rare bit that's unskippable)?

Dirt with grass. I'll venture with some sense of certainty this wasn't what the DA npc was getting at in Iakus' example, though.

Or possibly the cursing crowd could ignore the omission of said obscenities. However, DAO appears to be a fairly well done compromise for all.

I'm rather fond of it.
I think generally swearing, like lightsabers, should be reserved for moments of maximum dramatic effect and not wasted en mass in arena fights against weird monsters and bug guys.
In particular I'm hoping our new protagonist won't inherent Shepard's habit of regular low level swearing, I found it made them appear cruder than I would have liked.

The cursing crowd thinks obscenities are fun sometimes, and while I can only speak for myself, I don't imagine that will change anytime soon.
In any case, what do you regard as more likely? What is and is not deemed acceptable in a M Rated game has changed considerably from DAO's time, and Bioware's apparent preference is to follow that trend (and since it provides more freedom in crafting their stories and their characters, it's a wonderful thing).
Courage, I suppose.

You're right. And no, I don't think so either.
But every time a dwarf mentioned "sodding" I had a flashback to a summer job I had as a freshman at college (or as you say, "uni"). There's nothing but rocks...why are they always talking about sod?

You know, there is a very simple fix to this problem, Elhanan. If the game says 16+ on the box, don't play it. Cut out the risk of hearing profanity altogether.

I don't disagree, but everyone has their pet peeves. I wont play as a female in a RPG for example, I feel weirdly voyeuristic in a peeping tom sense when I try. So if Cyberpunk for example uses a fixed female protagonist I wont be playing despite loving the cyberpunk game and genre. If I was on their forums and bitching, the why don't you just ignore it calls would be unhelpful for me.

As an aside, I highly recommend trying the female City Elf origin in DAO. It seems far more visceral than the male version; much like the tales that inspired Red Sonja and the Bride in Kill Bill I (the edited version, of course).
