Heya Guys,
This topic has probably been discussed before, but I was just curious about your opinions. Some games, and I won't explicitly mention them to avoid Bioware vs. Rest debates, use language which is considered more mature (aka swearing). I personally tend to swear a lot when I'm frustrated, so am glad if I see my character express his/her frustrations in a similar manner. For instance a more renegade type of character would, in my humble opinion of course, be more likely to swear than a paragon character who would probably opt for more diplomatic language. However especially in the stressful situations we're bound to end up in, I can imagine my character yelling out an insult or two.
I'm not necessarily arguing that Bioware is severely lacking in the mature language department, but I couldn't help but feel a great sense of joy when my Inquisitor asked whether 'things could stay (profanity removed, free warning point received) fixed for one second', which I didn't have that often in Bioware games.
What do you guys think? Does swearing equal more mature language? Or should it be avoided?
I feel that it depends on context. The Inquisitor was the leader of a force that rivaled the power of most nations. If he was swearing left and right, that'd be inappropriate for a political figure and religious exemplar.
I usually feel that swearing is like a spice. If you use too much, it'll overpower the overall flavor of the dish. You swear too much and most will pay more attention to your crass language than the point that you're trying to get across. It can be a sign of maturity, but most use it as way of trying to sound mature or cover up holes in their vocabulary.
In a Bioware game, I feel like it's used just enough. It varies from character to character and that's how it should be. For example, Jack swears a lot, but Thane doesn't utter a single curse word. Maybe Paragon and Renegade dialogue options could use a bit more spice, but it's a non-issue for me.
