It's probably also worth noting that a gore toggle is a relatively straightforward thing, usually already included with the game because of content laws in different nations. Whereas unless I'm missing something a language filter would require either creating alternate audio for every offending line or at least flagging every offending line so that it could be modified at run-time by bleeps or some kind of Ned Flanders filter.

Unless bioware completely changes their writing style they could probably manually flag every instance of swearing in an hour I don't know what voice actors cost but 30 new words is probably not breaking the budget.

40 now and I have some gifs that I believe convey my attitude towards this topic's prolific nature.

Um, no you aren't. This forum doesn't allow people to mock, insult, or attack others. You agreed to those rules when you made your account.

Hehehehe.......hehehehehe........HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Did you sign up yesterday or something? What the "rules" say and what they actually allow are very, very different. I don't know if I've personally seen a single topic on this forum that hasn't involved some combination of mocking, insulting and attacking at some point. This place is no more civilized than any other anonymous internet forum.

There have been a few threads that have managed to remain civil, but for the most part yeah.

This is the last time I'm wasting my time on you and I only have one thing to say. Go back and take a look at my previous comments. Go and count how many times I very specifically pointed out that I. Do. Not. Personally. Care. If. There. Is. Any. Swearing. With each response you make it clearer and clearer that you see only what you want to see. Have fun fumbling in the darkness that is your life.

I am very sorry, I did not know that was your kitten I ate, or that clown I punched was your friend.

At any rate, I do not recall at any point saying you cared if there was swearing or not.   However you have several times stated you did not think an environment where nobody swore was realistic.  If you like, I can go back and cite the exact quotes.

Having the gore toggle off in DAO means Dog can't clean you off and regain health from it... ;)

Which is such a minor distinction that it doesn't tick me off half so much as the idea of a language toggle does. My opposition to content toggles might be of the ethical variety, but it doesn't mean that I apply that opposition militantly and without exception, and that example is way too mild an offense to turn me against the gore toggle as firmly and passionately as I oppose the prospect of one pertaining to dialogue.

More like the cost of thirty new lines recorded in studios with support staff on hand, edited, then inserted into the game across however many languages you want to have a swear filter for, and I suspect that's simplifying the process a lot.

Even so, my point is that a gore toggle is built on stuff that is basic programming. You need a menu option for the gore toggle and you need to wrap an if statement around any block of code that's generating a gore effect. I don't know how hard a profanity toggle would be but it would mess with the game's production schedule and assets in addition to however it was implemented technically, that makes it non-trivial.

Well, it's a slippery slope.

Why not just have 100 toggles.  For everything from swearing, to gore, to cheese, to the colour yellow.  That way everyone could turn off everything they didn't like or offended them.  Of course the game would be 30 seconds long and consist of the PC standing in one place (or sitting if you use the standing toggle). But everyone would be "happy".

Assuming the "happy toggle" is switched to "on".

Treat swearing like romances - add a wheel icon that warns the player that choosing a certain dialogue option will lead to swearing. The undesired content can then be easily avoided. Also, give the player the option to tell their companions that swearing is not wanted so their swearing related content can be skipped too - a few alternate lines might be necessary in case said content is critical to the main story path.

Don't make it a technical thing like a toggle, make it an in game RP choice - just like choosing to make your character swear is one.

I'd recommend checking out the previous foul language thread we had. A Bioware dev went much more in depth about the associated costs with such a feature, which suffice it to say, it's not as cheap as some make it out to be based.

This point tends to come up whenever someone throws out the "just use a toggle" suggestion. In a game designed to be played by millions of people, this thread (and its predecessor) do not indicate anywhere close to the support necessary to devoting any amount of resources.

And while we're at it let's just have a breathing toggle! Cause you know... sometimes when people breathe it offends me so (BLEEPING) much.

Bioware did this in Trespasser. However, the clue was also profane. And the problem I wish to solve now before it becomes worse is the obscenities mouthed by surrounding NPC's, as these are the ones that cannot be controlled by the Player.

As a former WoW player, its really not that different, BSN is just in the relatively calm phase in between big announcements and game releases now.

The protagonist should be Father Jack Hackett!

It would make the dialogue wheel so much easier by just having those four options every time. :D
