Largest producer and consumer of porn in the world.

Japan is 2nd I believe.

I'd lay down a dollar that a good portion of those consumers are the ones who yell about it the most. It's their secret shame.

This is a thread that didn't need to be necro'd. The folks who are wrong are still wrong, the folks who are right are still right, and nobody's had any startling new insights yet, and honestly, I don't think there are any to be had.

If it fits the character and the moment, I'm all for it. If it's in for the sake of adding mature content, then no.

That's exactly what I meant. People in games should talk like real people. And that includes swearing when it fits the situation.

Prefer the written dialogue of DAO to that of many or most of the later games.

Are we still talking about this?

Shishh ... using * to hide swear-words is still forbidden if the intent is clear, just read the rules about this after being suspended for a day after posting in this ...very good...thread ...*cringes*

So, to make it clear to all here: I learned my ... very good ....lesson, boys and girls! Stop the effin' swearin' or I'll give everyone a sound beatin' and wash your ...very good...mouths with ...very good...soap!!

Wait...effin? Does it count as profanity? I'll risk it and see what happens...oh my god! Not the ...very good... banhammer, please NO!

Dunno, but it is difficult to remain objective about those using profanity also being reflective of character if the ridicule against those that refrain from it in this thread is evidence. Seems small and petty, IMO.

I have no problems as long as it's written well and fits the character/situation. For example, I didn't take any particular notice of the swearing in The Wolf of Wallstreet since it fit the theme of the movie. Also it's gonna be weird if my character stubs his toe and yells out "fudge", that'd be a real immersion breaker!

What about a moan of pain; akin to the expression made when a soldier is hit, or lands from a high fall. Sometimes no dialogue can be better, esp if there is a word limit.

That is why the "defeat arc" at the Asari homeworld in me3 is one my favorite arcs in the series.Because Shepard finally shows an emotion and not just the standard  stoic stuff.

Perhaps their problem was that they didn't know how to deliver convincing emotion via a player-choice. They sorta fixed that with DA:I but they could do better. I want to see their dialogue system for DA:I in place for a protagonist in a plot that allows him/her to have some serious emotional investment where your companions play bigger part in the grander scheme, more betrayals and more steak. I fuckin' love steak.

I don't take any issue with swearing at all. If someone only uses swear words for swear words sake, my opinion of them might change, but I'm a big boy. I can take it without blushing.

But you make a good point. It should fit the situation when it comes to games of movies. But if it fits the situation, go swear away. Tender souls might take issue when being in the same room as me when my computer crashes. And I haven't been shot at in years. So, I fully understand if some soldier isn't observing tea party manners.

Personally I'd love it if computer games characters talked like "real" people as I know them... every game would be a sweary mix of Ash (Evil Dead) meets Guybrush Threepwood ... it would be awesome!

If used appropriately, as in an intensely emotional scene, middle of combat, or other high-energy moment, then its perfectly fine.     Any character though that uses it conversationally is going to look pretty immature.

Swearing is all kinds of cool when you are a teenager trying to pretend to be an adult.   However, most adults that have actually matured don't use it unless their emotional state is so charged that it overpowers their rational thinking.

I cursed just yesterday when I missed my skeet target because my 870 jammed ejecting a shell, and then had to spend the next fifteen minutes prying it out.

I cussed yesterday as well, when I splashed hot coffee over me and my desk. "Clumsy fool" just didn't cut it.

Of course I loaded all four shells, so after the second jammed on ejection, I was basically doing field maintenance on a loaded firearm.

I wasn't happy, that kind of thing will kill you if you don't do it right, you can accidentally have it pointed at yourself and once you clear the jam, pull the trigger or jar it so that its slide mechanism breaks, any numerous bad things can happen up and including death. But yeah, cursing is a completely natural, and acceptable response to situations that call for it, it doesn't need to be a highly stressful situation to warrant it, it can be a minor inconvenience, or a situation you just utterly don't care for.

That said I knew what I was getting into...any 870 made since like the mid 90s isn't worth much, its a shame too, that shotgun is legendary for performance and quality, but...its basically just coasting off of all the models that were made in the 70s. Those are excellent guns, they used good steel, the internals were sealed up nice, they wouldn't wear out, you could shoot them forever...but that changed like everything changed.

There is no quality anymore.

Tripe, garbage, dung heap, pile of smoldering manure, etc. There are many ways to utilize language without resorting to profanity.

That is a creative way to curse someone, instead of actual profanity. Is it taken directly from the old poetries?
