Does swearing equal more mature language?

Nope. My experience with swearing is that it's used either for emphasis or insults; Swearing is generally considered for adults, but I don't qualify it as mature. As far as usage, it depends on the character. If ME2's Jack is speaking shakespearean and Tali's dropping F bombs, it ain't gonna fit. If planetary bandits and badasses are using the language, than that's fine n' dandy. Frankly, I'm more concerned on quality of the writing than the vulgarity.

I'd expect BioWare to use them as most would use fine china - only for special occasions.

I can think of some movie or book dialogue that would have been ruined had inoffensive words been used instead of profanity. Whether or not profanity should be used really depends on the character, the scene, and the story being told.

Sort of off-topic I suppose but there is no reason for people to get offended by certain words. There are exceptions of course, like pejoratives, but on the whole the reasons why most profane words are considered such is completely random.

Consider the 'Don't *bleep* with Aria' line from Mass Effect 2. Instead of dropping the f-bomb she could have said, "Don't screw with Aria." Both screw and the f-bomb are crude words for sex, yet only one of the two is considered profane. It is completely arbitrary. People only get offended because they've been culturally indoctrinated to feel offended. There is no real difference between those two words except you're told that one word is worse than other, probably by some adult when you're a child.

As long as it isnt like in some films, where every other word is f-bomb or the tourette syndrome rants  you heard in Bullet Storm, its okay. Im actually quite surprised that the merc groups and krogans didnt drop any f-bombs. Jack did the most dmg.

I've no issue with profanity so long as it fits the character and/or situation.  I always thought it strange that Shepard didn't swear or there wasn't more swearing among Alliance members.  Damn near everyone swears in the military.

I'm also surprised no one has thrown out how Bioware can just make a profanity filter for in-game content...being it's so easy to implement;)

I see the Bioware mods are working overtime on this thread.

An unwise one decided to remove completely a serious post of mine where I was explaining my reasons, only because it contained a Youtube video with many "Reservoir Dogs" film profanities.

The staff here's becoming more coarse and weak each passing day.

Back on topic:

Regarding profanity, there seems to be some confusion and arguments whether profanity is juvenile or mature: In itself it is neither.

Rather, this is about realistic characters in a realistic (in the sense of the human element) world,

and trying to write them in a way that makes them more real and alive.

Like it or not, people use profanity in the real world rather frequently, not all people and not all the time, but it is used frequently enough.

I suppose that in some closed communities and religious circles it might be different, but this is the real wide world I'm referring to.

There is no reason to assume that a futuristic Sci-fi universe is any different in this regard, and therefore the sanitation of all profanity has the potential to

make this game feel incredibly synthetic and break immersion. (even as it is, ME needs improvement on the immersion front, not a downgrade)

Any video game that lacks in the profanity department is compensated by my own swearing whenever I'm getting my butt handed to me by a particularly difficult enemy.

I don't see why not so long as it's not every other word, at least for me.

Swearing has to remain as a spice for the conversation, not the main dish. Some dishes do need spices and too blunt without it but no spice alone can make a good dish.

And in the real world, how does profanity help?

IMO, users of profanity have a problem articulating their statements as per my experience with a brilliant mind (look at  my previous post in this thread). Listening to a person that can properly articulate their ideas is a joy to hear, not so with a potty mouth.

Ah, the ol' use of language debate, I like this one; it tends to reveal the pretentiousness in people. (I'm looking at you, 'profanity is indicative of inmaturity, harumph harumph' crowd.)

My own tastes aside, this is entirely subjective. For both the writers and the fans. There are people out there who would willingly prolapse their own anus before suffering the indignity of muttering such crass words. There are also those that would scream all the bastards under the sun, at children, before daring to censor themselves. Then there is everybody else inbetween.

Bioware is famous for their characters. Some are good, some bad, some kill, some heal, some swear, some don't. The thing that makes them great are the shades of grey applied, which includes how they interact with others. Bioware have done a good job making the swearing believable, because just like real life, it's always there but rarely in your face. I only hope they continue with that balance.

Honorary mention for the 'nug humpers' and 'bosh'tets' out there.

You can have contrasts in ways that don't involve language. I've experienced groups of people in fiction where none of them use such vocabulary and yet every member was still interesting.

Also agreed. But certain subject matters go with certain types of personalities that reflect them. Censoring their behaviour or speech is dishonest to the milieu and problems they spawn from and leaves the characters detached from the issues.

Profanity helps when things happen to fast and your mind can't keep up with it. Such as when you get hurt. When bad things happen right in front of you. Or when you're just totally shocked or enamoured that you just can't think of the words. Profanity helps with a lot when you think about it.

Opinion; not fact, I believe. Cursing at those attempting to help a hurt or needy individual is unlikely to benefit the situation.

I never claimed it as fact. I said it helps. I never said curse at them. I never even implied doing it to another person at all. People do utter words to themselves y'know.

I doubt that there is any evidence that cursing helps. And if others hear it, their responses may be altered by it.

The way DAI approached both nudity and swearing is more or less what I expect from a game like Mass Effect.

We keep talking about "help" in this thread. Help with what? To express yourself? Sure, profanity can help with that. You can always come fairly close through other means, but why should you do more work to end up with an inferior version?
